INFORMATION ABOUT ASSESSMENT FOR NATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS Students in Years 11, 12 and 13 are issued with an Assessment booklet early in Term 1. It contains the following information: National Certificate of Educational Achievement NCEA is the academic qualification offered at McAuley High. Students at McAuley High School are able to study for NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3 and Scholarship examinations. For information on how NCEA works, students and parents are advised to go to www.nzqa.govt.nz/ncea to look for specific requirements for NCEA levels 1, 2 & 3, University Entrance and the requirements for certificate endorsements and Scholarship. McAuley High School also offers students study towards the National Certificate in Tourism and the following Vocational Pathways. • Creative Industries • Service Industries • Social and Community Services How many credits do I need to gain an NCEA? NCEA Level 1 NCEA Level 2 NCEA Level 3 University Entrance 80 credits at any 60 credits at Level 2 or 60 credits at Level 3 NCEA Level 3 Level above plus 20 credits* from plus 20 credits* from 14 credits in 3 University Level 1 Level 2 approved subjects 10 credits in Literacy Level 1 Literacy and Level 1 Literacy and 5 Reading credits and 5 numeracy credits numeracy credits Writing credits from approved Standards 10 credits in 10 level 1 credits in Numeracy Numeracy www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications.standards/awards/university-entrance/approved-subjects/ www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications.standards/awards/university-entrance/literacy-requirements-2/ * Credits are allowed to count for more than one level of NCEA University Entrance University Entrance (UE) is the minimum requirement to go to a New Zealand university. You need to be aware that different universities and different courses may have higher entry requirements. You are advised to check with the Careers’ Department to find the entrance requirements of any course you are interested in studying in the future. University Entrance (UE) will continue to be the minimum requirement to go to a New Zealand university. To be awarded UE you will need: • NCEA Level 3 • Three subjects - at Level 3 or above, made up of: o 14 credits each, in three approved subjects • Literacy - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of: 5 credits in reading and 5 credits in writing • Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of: o achievement standards - specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects o or unit standards - package of 3 numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, 26627 - all three required). Assessment Information for Students 2
Most universities will rank you on your best 80 credits at Level 3 or higher. You are competing with all of New Zealand for limited places in a university. Once you have met the requirements for University Entrance it will appear on your Record of Achievement. It is important that you check the entry criteria of the tertiary institution you wish to apply to. Some universities have further criteria than that above. Scholarship Scholarship is a monetary award to recognise top students. It does not give you extra credits. Scholarship students are expected to demonstrate high-level critical thinking, abstract and generalised thought, to integrate, synthesise and apply knowledge, skills and understanding and ideas in complex situations. Students will be selected and recommended by the HOD to enter Scholarship. There is an additional entry fee for Scholarship and an additional exam in most cases. (2018: $30) Certificate Endorsements If you perform consistently above the 'Achieved' level, your result(s) can be 'endorsed' to reflect your high achievement. If you gain 50 credits at Excellence, your NCEA will be endorsed with Excellence. Likewise, if you gain 50 credits at Merit (or Merit and Excellence) your NCEA will be endorsed with Merit. Endorsement awards are shown on your Record of Achievement. Course Endorsements Course endorsement provides recognition for a student who has performed exceptionally well in an individual course. Students will gain an endorsement for a course if, in a single school year, they achieve: • 14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence, and • At least 3 of these credits are from externally assessed standards and 3 credits are from internally assessed standards. Note: the externally assessed standard requirement does not apply to Physical Education, Religious Studies and Level 3 Visual Arts. • A course endorsement can only be awarded in one calendar year. How many credits should I aim for? There are entry requirements to get into different courses in Years 12 and 13, and many university courses are looking for a minimum number of credits at a Merit/ Excellence level in particular subjects. You MUST aim to get more than the minimum requirement to pass your certificates so that you have plenty of choices available to you when it comes to choosing courses in the future. Assessment tasks – what and when? The assessment tasks are written to meet national guidelines and external moderation requirements. You gain credits by meeting standards in assessments which take place during the year (Internals) and also in exams (Externals) in November/December. Some Visual Arts and Technology External Standards are assessed by portfolio, and there is a Mathematics External in September at Level 1, The Tongan External examinations are held in September. Each task will include criteria to explain what is needed to achieve success. Conditions of assessment will be clearly stated in each assessment task. You will be given an Assessment Outline (see example below) at the start of the year in each of your subjects which will tell you which Standards are being assessed each term, how many credits they are worth, how they will be assessed Internal or External (NCEA exam) and give you a guideline as to the time of each assessment. This outline will also let you know if there is a Further Assessment Opportunity for each Standard. Assessment Information for Students 3
Your teachers will confirm for you the actual dates of each assessment. A range of assessment types will be used – some may be ongoing such as portfolios, assignments or research projects, while others will take the form of practicals, speeches, tests etc. Each assessment is designed to suit the topic or skill that is being assessed. It is good practice to have a year calendar and mark when your assessments and the school practice exams are on. If you find several assessments are due at the same time, the beginning of the year is the time to discuss this with your teachers, not the day before. Students are urged to record their result for each Standard on the Assessment Outline page to track their progress towards the qualification. You must treat each assessment as an opportunity to gain credits towards your certificate. Students who work well during the year often complete their qualification before the External Exams. They can then focus on aiming for Merit and Excellence grades in their final examinations. You also must attempt all available Standards, both Internal and External, to the best of your ability in order to have the best chance of getting entry into your chosen course in future years. Can I have another go? Further Assessment Opportunity At McAuley High School there is a clear expectation that you complete all of your work to the best of your ability, regardless of whether there is a FAO or not. Not every assessment can offer a FAO. Some Internal Standards have one further assessment opportunity (FAO). Assessment Information for Students 4
Resubmission This is offered when a teacher judges that a mistake has been made by the student which the student should be capable of discovering and correcting themselves. In such cases, a teacher may consider it appropriate to allow a student to resubmit a specific part of the assessment. No more than one resubmission should be provided. It must take place before the assessor gives overall feedback to the student on the work done. The work should be closely supervised to ensure authenticity. Check your Assessment Statement and listen to the advice given by your teacher about assessments. Further Assessment Opportunity (previously called Reassessment) This occurs when a completely new, quality assured assessment is provided to students after their first assessment, and after additional teaching and learning has taken place. This could be a new test or research topic. Not all Internal assessed Standards will offer a further assessment opportunity. A maximum of one further opportunity may be offered to the student entered for that Standard. The same opportunity will be offered to all students including any student who legitimately missed or did not complete the first assessment. Further opportunity conditions must be consistent with those of the first opportunity. Students will be awarded the higher grade of the two opportunities from Not Achieved to Excellence. Check your Assessment Statement and listen to the advice given by your teacher about assessments. What if I miss a deadline? All assessments have deadlines that must be met to enable marking and moderation to occur and grades to be reported in a timely manner. If you fail to meet a deadline for an assessment outside of an acceptable reason, your parents will be notified by the HOD and/or your Dean. You will still be required to complete all of the work associated with that assessment. Work handed in after the due date without an extension, MAY be marked for guidance only, in negotiation with the teacher. However, a Not Achieved result will be reported. What if I know that I will be away on an assessment day? If you know that you are going to be away when an assessment is on or when an assignment is due you must give an explanation in writing to your teacher before the date of the assessment. The note must contain the contact details of your parent / caregiver so that the Head of Department is able to verify the circumstances. In some cases you may be able to sit the assessment at another time, you may be asked to sit a similar assessment or you may be given an extension. If you are absent because you are on holiday with your family, driver’s licence test, wagging or attending a non-medical appointment you will not be given another opportunity. Work for some assessments can only take place on a given day, e.g. a field trip or science experiments. If you miss that day, then you have missed the assessment opportunity. What if I cannot help being absent on an assessment day because I am sick, attending a funeral, on a school field trip or have another serious reason stops me attending school? You should get your parent or caregiver to phone the school in the morning to let the office know that you will be absent. If you are unwell you must bring a doctor’s certificate to explain your absence. For other reasons, such as a funeral of a close family member, evidence will need to be provided to the school that clearly shows you were not able to attend during the time of the assessment. The Head of Department will consider the matter and decide if you should be given an extension, another assessment opportunity, or a grade based on assessment already recorded. If the Head of Department is not certain that you should be given special consideration because of your absence, they will speak to the Deputy Principal about the matter. Assessment Information for Students 5
What if I am sick for the school practice exams? Practice external exams are very important because if you are legitimately absent at the end of the year, the grades you gain in the practice exams will be used to determine if you can be granted a ‘Derived Grade’ for NCEA. You will need to sit the exam as soon as you return with the doctor’s certificate. What if I am away on holiday? Self-interest leave If you plan to take self-interest leave your parents /guardians must write to the Principal requesting leave before the leave is taken. This is a Ministry of Education requirement. You will need to discuss with each subject teacher if any assessments are due during the leave. It is important you and your parents are aware, self- interest leave may result in you missing out on Internal assessment credits. What if my computer crashes, my printer runs out of ink? It is your responsibility to continually save your work. If your printer is out of ink, print at school or email your work to your teacher. Checking results Each student is expected to check their results on their Assessment Outlines. Students can check their results on the KAMAR system School reports will have all the finalised results recorded on them Students are encouraged to check their NZQA results on the NZQA website: www.nzqa.govt.nz periodically, using their learner login. The school does not have access to these. If a student finds their grade is incorrect, they should see their teacher first. NSN Number Students have a personalised NSN number. When you log into NZQA for the first time you will be asked to generate a password. Keep this safe. Once you have your NSN number and registered on NZQA website you will be able to view your results, look at your Record of Achievement and also make a request for an official Record of Achievement. You may have one of these free per year. Withdrawing students from Standards McAuley High does not condone the practice of withdrawing students. However, there are some exceptional circumstances. A student or teacher may instigate a withdraw discussion. Withdrawing is thoroughly discussed with the teacher, Deputy Principal, Principal, student and parents before a final decision is made. It is always our mission to support students through assessment issues. All considerations regarding this procedure are made before September and reported to NZQA. Authenticity – submitting work that is your own It is essential that the work that you submit for assessment is all your own. This means you must not: • copy work from any other source such as a book or from the internet without referencing it* • copy or use the work of any other learner either at this school, past or present, or from another school • making up or fabricating data in research assignments • impersonating someone else in an exam • “loan” some of the work you are not using for assessment to another student. Eg photos in Photography. Assessment Information for Students 6
Teachers will ask for a range of evidence to show that work submitted is your own. They could ask you to include a * Bibliography or reference list with your work which lists the sources that you have used in your assessment. They may also use your drafts as evidence that the final piece of work was done by you. Breach of Assessment Rules Different subject areas will use a variety of systems to ensure that the work you submit is authentic. If your teacher believes that the work is not all yours, you will be asked to produce your draft work and discuss the work with your teacher. Students are expected to put all assessments done on the computer through TURN IT IN. If the teacher is still not sure that the work was done completely by you, you may have to discuss the matter with the Head of Department and the Principal Nominee. You must also not allow your work to be seen, copied or used by another student and submitted as their own. This could equally mean your work is awarded Not Achieved. This is a serious offence and will be reported to Ms McLaughlin (PN) who will interview the students concerned, keep a record of their explanation and write to the parents to explain to them what steps have been taken by the school in investigating the matter and the outcome. Students are eligible to appeal. It’s not fair - Appeals If you believe that a grade you receive during the year is not correct, or a ruling is unfair, you have the right to appeal it. You, or your parent, must talk to your teacher about it within one week of getting your final grade. If you are still not happy with the outcome, you should complete the appeals form that is at the back of this booklet, then talk to the Head of Department who may consult with Ms McLaughlin (Principal Nominee). The school may call on an outside expert to verify a grade under appeal. You will be notified in writing by Ms McLaughlin of the final decision. Retention of work Your teacher will keep your internal assessment material into the next year. This is for the purpose of external moderation by NZQA. Both the Department and school will comply with the Privacy Act. Privacy Act No student’s personal details, entry or results data should be shown to anyone who does not need to see them without the student’s express permission. Some Visual Arts folios may be on display but no names will be published. How do I keep track of my credits? You can keep track of your credits (including Merit and Excellence results) using your NZQA login and your assessment outlines that you have been given for each subject. Your Form teacher and Dean will help you track how many credits you have gained. Before you leave in Term 4 you will be asked to confirm and sign off your results. You must let your teacher or Ms McLaughlin know if you think there has been a mistake with any of your results so the matter can be investigated and the results amended if necessary. NZQA will send you a card with Learner Login information which will enable you to check your entries and results on the NZQA website – results are sent to NZQA by the school on a weekly basis. Assessment Information for Students 7
What if I have a special learning need? – Special Assessment Conditions Students with evidence of long term issues affecting learning, may be eligible for special assistance in assessments. Some students may require enlarged examination papers because they have poor eyesight; they may require extra time to complete papers or be assigned a Reader/Writer for external standards. If you think that you might require extra assistance you must speak to Ms McLaughlin or Ms Brown (SENCO) at the start of Term 1 so that a proper assessment of your needs can be carried out by the school or other outside experts. The deadline for all Year 11 and new SAC applications is around the end of Term 1. NCEA Exams How much does NCEA cost? The cost for NCEA is $76.70 per student. An invoice for the NCEA fees will be sent to your parents at the beginning of Term 2 and the money needs to be paid by the end of July. All students will be sent the information about applying for Financial Assistance to have their fees reduced to $20 if their parents have a Community Services Card or are on a Benefit. Families are advised to annually check their daughter’s eligibility for financial assistance through www.nzqa.govt.nz/financial assistance. There is also a reduction in fees available for families that have more than one student sitting NCEA. If NCEA fees are not paid, NZQA will not release your results. Late applications cannot be processed by NZQA. See Mrs Mabey for more information. MCAT Maths exam Although MCAT is classed as an External exam it is conducted in classrooms at school. The school’s internal assessment policies must be applied to students who miss an MCAT assessment session, or who breach examination rules. If you are absent for medical or emergency reasons, a medical certificate will be required. If approved, you are eligible for a Derived Grade. Practice Exam Procedures Students must bring their own pens, pencils, calculators, rulers etc to the exam room in a clear plastic bag. Water in clear plastic bottles is permitted to be brought into the exams. No watches, paper or food is allowed in the exam room. An emergency clear plastic bag which contains your cell phone (turned off), wallet, keys and other emergency items may be taken into an exam room. Students must follow all instructions given by Exam Supervisors. Students will be notified of the times during which they are allowed to leave the exam room. If students breach the exam conditions they will be given a Not Achieved grade as the student will be considered to have been cheating. Parents will be notified. You may appeal the decision using the appeals Procedure. External Exam Procedures As above. If there is a breach of the exam rules during NCEA exams in November/December, NZQA will investigate the matter and report their findings to the school (where appropriate) and the affected students. What if I am sick or away for NCEA exams? Practice external exams are very important because if you are sick at the end of the year the grades you gain in the practice exams will be used to determine if you can be granted a ‘Derived Grade’ for NCEA. If you are sick during the NCEA exams in November you must contact Ms McLaughlin urgently – this may mean that you can get a Derived Grade based on your Practice Externals. You need to collect a form from Ms McLaughlin and take it to your doctor or other appropriate person to be filled in. Ms McLaughlin will contact NZQA on your behalf to apply for any Derived Grades. Assessment Information for Students 8
Derived Grade A derived grade is a mark generated from evidence of relevant earlier work. It is only available for external assessment like NCEA exams and is not available for Scholarship. There are specific circumstances set by NZQA (not the school) as to what situation allows for a derived grade. If you are seriously ill, have an immediate family bereavement or traumatic event leading up to or stops you from sitting an exam, you may be eligible for a Derived Grade. The process is: As soon as possible, collect a Derived Grade form from Ms McLaughlin. If ill, get your doctor to fill out her/his section and return to Ms McLaughlin. If a death, you will need to provide proof ie death notice, funeral pamphlet. If accepted, a grade based on your practice exams will be used. If you got NA in the practice exams, you would get NA, so there is no point going further with the application. When will I get my results? Students should go to the NZQA website www.nzqa.govt.nz and use their NSN to register for a Learner login. This enables a student to view their results as soon as they are reported. In January, students can access their results for internal and external assessment from the previous year using their online login. Hard-copies are not automatically sent out but can be ordered before 31 December of the year in which the results were gained. Students have the right to request: • a review, if a processing error has occurred or • a reconsideration, if they believe an error in marking has occurred. Records of Achievement and Certificates for NCEA and University Entrance will be printed on request (via your Learner login), and will be mailed to those who have requested them in April, once all late results and reconsiderations and reviews are complete.
