M Academic Structure The academic philosophy of have the best chance to C the College is that students learn when they are grouped in classes of similar ability and extended to the utmost. Our Commitment In everything we do, we aim to grow: • A love of learning • Respectful relationships • Limitless potential We group students according to the curriculum level they are presently working at in our Year 9 and Year 10 classes (with the exception of the Design Learning and Sports Performance classes). This enables teachers to better focus on the common learning needs within the group as well as cater for individual needs. Opportunities are available for students to shift levels as their learning develops. The College is a member of the GATE project which provides extension and enrichment programmes for gifted and talented students. There are also classes who provide additional support to those students with significant learning needs. Enhanced Learning Mount Maunganui College meets the needs of our students. We have created a number of programmes to support the various talents and requirements of students. • Senior scholarship • University papers • Enrichment co-ordinators • Athlete development programme • Areas of special interest Design Learning Students are invited to apply to be part of a class that will undertake an integrated learning programme. Students in this class will learn core curriculum objectives in a setting where they are able to design meaningful projects. These project experiences will allow for a deeper engagement with knowledge than is often possible in regular class settings. Alongside the knowledge gained through project work students will also strengthen capabilities and dispositions that will be valuable for life beyond secondary school. The programme and environment will allow for: • Purposeful integration of core curriculum knowledge and skills • Authentic projects to be undertaken using a design thinking framework • The explicit building of capabilities such as problem solving, critical and creative thinking, perseverance, resilience, communication and collaboration Elite Performing Arts Contributing schools are approached to identify talented performing arts students while they are in Year 8. Students are invited to apply for the Elite Performing Arts Programme and are then assessed by staff working in the programme. Gifted and Talented (Gate) Students who show that they have special talent in particular areas of the curriculum or extra curricular activities are identified and encouraged to extend their talents through a programme that is designed for them in consultation with the student, parents and programme co-ordinator. Accelerated classes will be targeted for extension programmes. The GATE Co- ordinator will also arrange for after school workshops for Year 9 students and Year 8 students from the contributing schools. The different faculty areas in the College create each workshop. Sports Performance Contributing schools are approached to identify talented sports students while they are in Year 8. Students are invited to apply for the Sports Performance Programme and are then assessed by staff working in the programme. After this assessment, students are enrolled in the programme after signing an agreement in which they commit to meeting the course requirements, including regular training sessions, mentoring and ongoing dedication to their preferred discipline.
