One of the main messages of the *National Day of session was that we need to ‘stay alert but not alarmed’. It is our role as the significant adults in Action Against Violence & Bullying our children’s lives to ensure we keep our children safe without alarming them. Today we have had several children unnecessarily anxious about the virus. It is difficult when it is such a Sat 21st March continuous topic of discussion in the media however we need to protect our children from *Harmony Day constantly hearing about it. We will be giving our students the message at school that this is not Tue 24th Mar something they need to be concerned about, but reminding them about good hygiene practices *Regional Swimming that protect us from infections. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE CONT’d Mad Food Science Incursion and Healthy Schools Achievement Program As a follow-up to our Mad Food Science Incursion I am providing information from the Healthy Eating Advisory Service which provides resources to schools. Please see the links below to assist with packing healthy lunches for your children. Students need the right fuel. What they eat at school can affect their energy, concentration and ability to learn. Providing healthy foods and drinks at school will improve your child’s mood, memory and concentration. The Healthy Eating Advisory Service has got everything you need to help parents pack healthy lunchboxes. For a healthy lunchbox pick & mix something from each food group 1 - 6! The Department of Health and Human Services' Pick & Mix 1-6 poster provides a range of ideas and practical tips to inspire families to create healthy school lunchboxes Pick and mix one tasty option from each of the five core food groups to create a healthy lunchbox every day: Fruit (e.g. fresh, frozen, pureed and canned in natural juice Vegetables, legumes and beans Milk, yoghurt, cheese and alternatives Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds, and legumes/beans Grain (cereal) foods Plain water Click here to download your free copy of the Pick & Mix 1-6 poster. PTO> The Root Cause, the company that delivered The Mad Food Science incursion also has information about ways to pack a healthy lunchbox https://therootcause.com.au/packing-a-healthy-lunchbox-made-simple/. Remember the most nutritious food comes with the least amount of packaging such as fruit and vegetables. These foods are not only better for student’s health but for the environment as they can be easily composted. Mad Food Science Incursion The Mad Food Science incursion used experiments, observations, and discussions to reinforce key health message. Students learnt about food and how it impacts their health, learning, waste and the environment. They were thoroughly engaged during the tasting of spinach leaves and were amazed how spinach tasted different in the green smoothie when some water, banana and strawberries were added. Students came away from the incursion knowing how to read packet labels and to identify which products have too much sugar (if sugar is listed in the first 5 ingredients) or are heavily processed (if there are more than 6 ingredients in the product). The facts that surprised students the most was that only 6% of primary school students each the recommended serving of fruit and vegetables per day. In our school that equates to only about 33 students eating the recommended daily serving of fruit and vegetables! Gisborne Lions Club supports our school community Last week the school received a generous donation of $1,000 from the Gisborne Lions Club. We are most grateful for this donation. These funds can be used towards the sporting and education needs of our students. If you are a family needing additional support either short term or longer term with any of these needs, please speak to one of our principals in xconfidence. Enjoy the nice weather. Julie Soutter
MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Caring Hearts, Caring Minds, Caring Actions Open afternoon and Family Picnic Thank you to the families who were able to attend the Open afternoon and Family picnic today. We understand everyone is busy and appreciate you making the effort to visit your child’s classroom and our community event. Thank you to the student leaders for their assistance in organising and running the activities. National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence is on Friday March 20th. The focus is to take a stand together against bullying and as a school we want to support our students to stand up against nastiness and students who are mean towards others. From recent student focus groups, it was raised that we don’t have a lot of bullying incidents but more nastiness or students being mean to others. We want to support our students in reducing these behaviours. Some students mentioned they are not confident to stand up to others if they see or hear their peers being nasty or mean to another student. We encourage our students to say a one line comment such as ‘That’s not nice’ or ‘Stop saying that’ to assist in deterring students from being nasty to others and seek support from an adult if needed. Staff and students are discussing these elements in their SEL lessons this term and will continue to discuss important social strategies and approaches to allow all students to be in an environment that is free from nastiness and promotes a safe learning environment. We want students to understand and follow the approaches in reducing nastiness and preventing situations to get to the bullying stage. Please access the link below for strategies to support your child if you believe they are being bullied. https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/NationalDay To promote ‘standing together’ we encourage our students to wear a touch of orange on Friday March 20th. This could be a hair accessory, socks wristband or t-shirt. We want our students to wear the school uniform with a touch or orange. Lost Property Lost property continues to be an area of discussion amongst our families, staff and community. We will work to return items with names on them, however, if there are items that have been in lost property for a long period of time and have names from past students and have been handed down to other families and have not been able to be returned, they will be given to PFA to sell in their second hand uniform stall. Our PFA members who manage this are amazing at what they do and also go through the items in case we have missed one with a name. Our goal is to ensure our families have their items returned, however, we need your support with this. Please ensure you label all clothing and other items brought to school clearly. Also, check if your child has brought home their jumpers and build their responsibility with checking lost property for lost items. Enjoy the weekend. Kind regards, Lisa

Anybody from Grades Prep to Six can enter, so the more entries for our school, the better chance we have of winning! Thank you for supporting us and good luck!
CANTEEN NEWS Canteen Volunteer Helpers — we need your help please! Each week to operate, the canteen relies on having volunteer helpers. Friday is our busiest day of the week, so we need at least 2 volunteers in the morning, and another 2 in the afternoon. On Mondays and Wednesdays we need at least 1 volunteer in the morning, and another in the afternoon. The 2 shifts are 9 to 11.30am or 12 to 12.30pm. Tasks are not complicated. A current Working with Children Check is required. Students love to see their parents and carers helping out in the canteen, so give it a go! Every bit of help we get is greatly appreciated. We would love to see a member of each family helping out once a term if possible. We know families are busy with many commitments. If the load is shared amongst families, this will help. If you can help any time during Term 1, please email our Canteen Manager Rebecca Morgan. She would love to hear from you! There are still many items in this area, most of them unnamed. Please label all belongings. Labels can easily be done by using an indelible black texta. We seek your cooperation in helping to identify what lost property items belong to which student. Items include the school uniform, lunch boxes and drink bottles. Unlabelled items will be cleared out when the pile becomes too big and spreads out into the corridor. They will be passed to the PFA for the second hand uniform shop if not collected.
