Autumn Term 25th October 2019 Dear Parents and Carers, SIAMS. A big thanks to everyone for their good wishes for our inspection. No official news but we are smiley still . New holiday dates at the end of the newsletter for 2020– 21. We do not grant holidays at other times of the year for children of statutory school age. Book Fair - Help to support Jennett's Park by visiting our book fair, running from 5th November- 8th November. Every book you buy at our Book Fair, helps us to earn free books for our school! With your generosity, we will hopeful- ly be able to buy class sets of books, and update our class libraries. The book fair will be held in the music room, and will be open during both parent's evenings, and from Wednesday to Friday- 3.30pm -4.00pm It is a great opportunity for the children to explore a variety of exciting books, and to get them excited about reading, all whilst raising money for the school! Thames Hospice – We raised an amazing £390.40! Thank you to our generous community! ‘Michelle on the move’ from radio Berkshire came to Jennett’s Park– 23rd October podcast– listen here — https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p07pssw2 School Photos - Place your order online by 7th November and you can benefit from free delivery to school. Over the past two weeks, we have been very lucky to receive visits from Eileen Browne, writer of Handa’s Surprise, and Rob Lloyd Jones, author of Wildboy. Eileen read her stories with nursery, and Reception and Year 1 were lucky enough to have workshops with her. Rob Lloyd Jones came in this Wednesday, and took a whole school assembly, which we hope inspired the children to contin- ue to read, and to try a range of books. Rob also lead workshops with Year 5 and 6, where they created their own plot for a story of their choice! Flowers - On Friday 11th October 2019 , Carolina and I ( Maya ) were chosen to help our Headteacher, Mrs Savage, decorate the Reception fence with fake flowers and vines. We did this because recently Mrs Savage has tried to plant real flowers but unfortunately they all died due to lack of water. As you walk in through the office entrance, you will see an array of colour in pots hanging from the fence. Also, we wrapped fake vines to create a more natural effect. We hope it makes you smile - it did us! Congratulations to Sarah and all the staff in the Harrison's school kitchen who gained another 5* rating from environ- mental health. Bravo! A sign of how well you work. Have a lovely holiday. If you are visiting any fireworks keep warm and keep safe. Elizabeth Savage - Headteacher
Black History Month We had a wonderful time celebrating Black History Month this year. The children enjoyed our visiting authors Valerie Bloom, who shared some of her poetry through actions and songs and did workshops with some of the classes. Al- so, authors Eileen Browne and Judith Makaniankhondo Nyirenda shared their books with KS1 and EYFS. We also know that many classes were involved with a variety of fun activities relat- ed to the celebrations. We still have one more visit from a Steel Pan company who will be visiting us early in the new term. Please talk to your children about all the things they have learned. Once again, thank you for your support. From Mrs Agbaje EMA leader In Canaries this week we have enjoyed a free writing week where we have been creating characters, set- tings and problems based on ourselves to use in a story for a writing competition.
YEAR 2 VALERIE BLOOM REPORT Year 2 loved having Valerie Bloom in to visit us. It was amazing to hear and learn some Jamaican words and to watch her perform amazing poetry that often ended up with us laughing! In Canaries, Valerie kindly taught us how to write poetry which every child was able to access. This poetry was about someone we love alongside our favourite foods, flowers, places and drinks. Some of our completed poems are as follows: Mum You are the ham and pepperoni on my pizza The lemon in my 7Up The fragrance in my red and pink rose And the great people in my London You are the Spooky party's in my Halloween Edwin You are the ketchup in my burger The flavour in my coke The scent of my daisy And the smell in my KFC You are the BBQs in my summer Jessica and Mia You are the honey on my toast The fizzy bubbles in my Coke Cola drink The memories in my poppys And the Ice in my smoothie You are the best place in my town - Tangs Canaries have enjoyed repeating the Pindar Cake song over and over as much as they can before Mrs Uhlig-Harris tells them to stop!
Black History Month, October 2019 We welcomed Judith Makaniankhondo Nyirenda to school on Monday 14th October. Judith is a local author, who lives in Binfield. She is originally from Malawi. Judith has published a dual language book, written both in English and Chichewa. She is pas- sionate about there being more to learning language than just words and is keen to promote both the vis- ual and tactile aspect of language too. Judith visited the Nursery and Reception classes to share her new book, Happy Birthday Vana! The chil- dren gave Judith a warm, Jennett’s Park welcome and showed great listening skills as Judith read her book aloud. Happy Birthday Vana! tells the story of Judith’s daughter’s fifth birthday. Judith shared some of the things that are significant to her family during their birthday celebrations, and our children enjoyed talking about their own birthday celebrations and things that are important to them. Thank you to Mrs Agbaje for asking Judith to visit us here at Jennett’s Park and to Judith for the time spent with our children sharing your first published book. Jennett’s Park Primary School PTA Storybook Scarecrow Trail Well done and thank you to children, staff and parents for donations and creativity! Look at the fabulous scarecrow scenes that have been created by each of our phases at school. Each scene is located next to one of the four school gates. We do hope you will have the chance to take part in this community event and enjoy trying to guess the storybook characters.

The BBC have just launched a fabulous new ‘Own It’ app for children. I would urge all parents to take a look and install it for those children starting to use social media and the internet more widely. The main aim of the app is to ensure that young people have a healthy experi- ence in the digital world. . Outstanding Owl and Rainbow Promise Learners Each week children are chosen for showing Owl learning behaviours or following our Rainbow Promise. Our Rainbow Promise underpins everything we do at school. Just as the Rainbow was a sign of God’s promise to Noah that from that moment God would enable Noah and the people of the earth to flourish and experience life in all its fullness. So as a school community we promise to do our best to enable all the pupils and adults of our school to flourish academically and professionally so that they might reach their potential. The Rainbow is also a symbol of the diversity of our school community, but as a church school we recognise that we are all created and valued by God, and so as a school community we commit to care for and value each other. The dove symbolises our need to persevere in some aspects of life as it is not always the first time we find success. It was not the first time that Noah had tried to find dry land and so we much seek strength within ourselves and from God to achieve. These are our Values we try to live each day Love Forgiveness Patience Honesty Respect Support Peace Kindness & Joy Our Owl Learning Behaviours are: C - Collaboration O - Optimism P - Perseverance P - Pride I - Inspiration C - Challenge MD - Managing Distractions
