Dear members of our school community

As we come to the end of Term 3 and reflect on our successes as a school community, I admit, I commenced
the term wondering whether schools would stay open due to COVID. As
the term progressed, I think we all started to breathe a little easier. I’d like
to thank our community for adhering to the new operating guidelines.
I truly believe this has allowed us to stay safe and operate as close to
normal as possible. Our students have done an amazing job. The
majority have displayed a zest for learning and have really enjoyed being
with their friends. Sometimes it’s not until something is taken from us that
we miss what we had. My hope is that we continue to progress into Term
4 building on our Term 3 successes. Our students have thrived with their
learning and their attitude. Our teachers have stepped up the intensity by
precisely differentiating and stretching students to achieve their individual
goals. We are a strong, close knit community who will continue the right
work!

Thursday 10 September was R U OK? Day. 2020 has been a challenging
year for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important
for us all to stay connected and for those who are able, be willing to support those around us. You don’t have
to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says they’re not OK. By knowing what to say
you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before they’re in crisis, which can
make a really positive difference to their life. If you feel like something’s not quite the same with someone you
know – there’s something going on in their life or you notice a change in what they’re saying or doing - trust
that gut instinct and take the time to ask them “Are you OK?” If someone says they’re not OK, make time to
listen, encourage action and check in. That conversation could change, or even save, their life.

I encourage our community to visit https://www.ruok.org.au/join-r-u-ok-day for further information.

This week we held Parent Teacher Interviews. If you haven’t had the chance to catch up with your child’s
class teacher, please make a time to have a discussion with them for an update on how your child is doing.

As from Term 4, 2020, the school newsletters will be published every fortnight rather than every week. We
have other forms of communication such as email and the school’s Facebook page to provide general
reminders and updates. This will commence Term 4, Week 2.

We are currently formulating classes for the 2021 school year. If you know your child won’t be returning to
Burpengary State School, please make contact with our office. The earlier we know this information, the
easier it is to plan. Alternatively, if you are intending on enrolling a child at Burpengary State School in 2021,
please make contact with the school office via our email admin@burpengaryss.eq.edu.au. As part of creating
next year’s classes, please email the admin address as above and include the subject as ‘requests’ in relation
to 2021 placements. Please note, teacher requests will not be considered.

Teachers, alongside the leadership team will make up class lists based on social and academic factors
facilitating the best potential learning and social outcomes possible. Therefore, on some occasions, parent
requests unfortunately cannot be met. The cut-off date for these requests is Monday 2 November, 2020
and will be strictly adhered to. Requests after this date will NOT be considered.

2021 Prep Students
Prep orientation sessions begin week two of next term. The first session is held on Tuesday 13 th October
9:00am-9:45am. Please email (prepenrol@burpengaryss.eq.edu.au) to confirm which sessions your child will
be attending. We encourage you to attend as many sessions as possible (five in total). Due to COVID 19
restrictions, only one adult is able to accompany each child. Thank you for your understanding.
Please note, to attend the Orientation mornings you need to have had your enrolment interview or have
booked an enrolment interview time.

Messages from Deputy Principal (Yr 2 & Yr 3) Mr Bowden

I am pleased to announce that we are able to resume Junior and Senior Choir rehearsals.
Rehearsals will take place in the P&C Centre to allow students to spread out and comply with COVID
guidelines around choir rehearsals in schools. Rehearsals will commence next week in Week 10.

Junior Choir: Tuesday 2 nd break.
Senior Choir: Wednesday 2 nd break.

Year 5 Swimming will take place in Week 2 of Term 4 and Prep Swimming will take place in Week 4 of Term
4. Parent/Carer information & permission notes will be emailed home shortly. Unfortunately due to a very
disruptive year and limited pool availability, we have had to re-schedule Year 3 Swimming to Term 1 in 2021.
Our current Year 3 students will be able to participate in a swimming program at the start of next year.

Next Week’s Behaviour Focus will be – Co-operation.
In class next week, classroom teachers will be explicitly teaching students, how they can effectively work with
others in the classroom and successfully play in the playground. I would ask all Parents & Carers to reinforce
this message at home.

Messages from Deputy Principal (Yr 4, 5 & 6) Mrs Waldron

BURPENGARY NEWSFLASH - Burpengary State School
Year 6 Enrolments in High School
All students in Year 6 need to enrol for Year 7 in High School in 2021, this is not an automatic process, and all
families need to get the paperwork from your selected high school, and follow the school’s processes for
enrolment in 2021. Information about Transition Days will be forwarded early in Term 4. Students must have
completed an Enrolment Interview to be eligible to attend the Transition Days for both Burpengary State
Secondary College and Narangba Valley State High School.

Year 6 Graduation and Celebration Day
We are commencing planning for COVID Safe processes for our Graduation Ceremonies in Week 10 of Term
4. Given the current restrictions, the school will need to hold 3 separate Graduation Ceremonies on Monday
7th and Tuesday 8th December, to cater for 1 or 2 parents attending per student. We have managed to book
the Year 6 Celebration Day to Aussieworld for Friday 4 December. Further information and invoices will be
sent early in Term 4.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, our staff may choose to wear facemasks at school. While there is no current
health advice to require the use of face masks as a measure to prevent COVID-19 transmission, our school
and the Department of Education recognise some staff members may want to wear face masks at work and we
support their decision to do so.

Our school continues to implement the Queensland Health recommended preventative actions to reduce the
risk of COVID-19 transmission which includes:

  keep 1.5 metres apart
  wash hands frequently
 stay at home if unwell
 avoid large gatherings and crowded indoor spaces,
 and
 practise good hygiene.

If you have any questions or concerns about this please
speak to a member of our school leadership team.

BURPENGARY NEWSFLASH - Burpengary State School
Library News

This week we have been reading Searching for Cicadas which is a lovely book about a
child and their grandfather searching for cicadas. It is part of a narrative non fiction
Nature Storybooks series. We have more of this series in the library that the students
are able to borrow. I wonder if they can name any of the Cicadas?

Our Junior School students have listened to a story about a Turtle who is celebrating his
birthday, but he is sad. Can your child tell you why?

Book Week officially runs from 17 October – 23 October. The theme this year is ‘Curious Creatures,
Wild Minds. We will celebrate the conclusion of Book Week with a dress up day on Friday 23 October.
Students can think of a book character they can come dressed as on the day. This year they may stay in
their costumes all day providing they can still go about their daily learning.

We are fundraising for the Pyjama Foundation and would appreciate a Gold Coin
Donation to this worthy cause.

Here are some tips to help you organise your costumes:
Tip 1: Have your children look at the characters in the books they borrow to see if
they can find anything in their cupboard at home that would suit. Sometimes it is
just a matter of matching a coloured shirt with jeans and adding some sort of prop to
make it all come together.
Tip 2: Get together some coordinating colours and a homemade mask and/or ears. Some character ideas
that would work using this method could be a ‘Brown Bear from ‘The Very Cranky Bear’, a black cat from
‘Slinky Malinki’, coloured T-Shirt over jeans and white or red sneakers with big paper coloured buttons from
‘Pete the Cat’ series.
Tip 3: Visit cheap shops for simple props such as capes, wigs, novelty headbands, or masks that can be
added to normal clothes to create a cheap costume. Some easy characters to create could be a scarecrow,
mouse or rabbit.

Chappy News
Hi everyone

Well we are nearing the end of term 3 already. I have had a great term getting to chat to everyone, seeing
the awesome lego creations each week, not to mention the pretty awesome colouring in and sketching that
my awesome Burpengary students do in their lunch breaks.

We have the CHAPPY ICECREAM FUNDRAISER coming up on Tuesday and Wednesday 15-16 September
– so excited for the first Ice-cream Day of 2020. We all love this fundraiser so please remember to send your
students with $1.50 so that they can enjoy an ice-cream in a cone with sprinkles or milo (or both) There is
also options for those with dietary requirements so that everyone can be involved. Due to the restrictions we
are having to do it over 2 days (every class will get to come down and enjoy it.).

Unfortunately spaces for the Mapleton Camp in the September School holidays have already been filled up

school but you as families as well. My email is katiel@chappy.org.au, or you can contact the office and they
can assist you to get in touch with me

Student Accident Insurance
Some school activities and physical education, particularly contact sports, carry inherent risks of injury.
Parents are advised that the Department of Education and Training does not have Student Accident
Insurance cover for students.
If your child is injured at school as a result of an accident or incident, all costs associated with the injury,
including medical costs, are the responsibility of the child, parent or caregiver.
Some incidental medical costs may be covered by Medicare. If parents have private health insurance, some
costs may also be covered through the private health insurance. Any other costs would be borne by the
parents.
Student Accident Insurance is an insurance policy that pays certain benefits in certain circumstances should
your child have an accident. It is a personal decision for parents as to the types and levels of private
insurance they arrange to cover their child for any accidental injury that may occur.
Parents should contact their insurer or an approved Australian insurance broker for more information
about student personal accident insurance cover for their child.
