Dear Parishioners, Well, it is “Goodbye” but in the true meaning and origin of the word “God be with you”… Eleven years living and praying with you and three of them as your pastor. I mentioned before that it left a mark. It’s a good one. I hope I leave you with fond memories of prayer, community and definitely some fun. Thank you for all you have been to me and for all the balls I dropped, the people I hurt or things I got wrong, please accept my apologies. I know I wasn’t always at my best and I hope it didn’t cause too much hurt when I wasn’t. You have been a blessing to me and I’m confident you’ll be that same blessing to Fr. Pawelko as he takes on his first pastorate here like I did. (That’s a compliment. The diocese trusts you to break newbies in!) My last exhortation, encouragement, pep talk…One of the books from Dynamic Catholic I wanted to give out to everyone on Christmas I never got to. Different things happened. The title is “The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic.” I wanted to distribute it as part of the 100th celebrations to encourage all of us to “Remember, Celebrate, and most importantly Commit!” to our faith and our faith community—our family—here at OLSH. But since I didn’t get a chance to hand it out, here’s a quick overview. With all the research Dynamic Catholic does, they determined that 7% of parishioners were doing most of the work. I think the percentage here at OLSH is a bit better than that but we can all step up our games, can’t we? And where can we step up? And I share these signs with you as you welcome your new pastor. Dynamic Catholics PRAY. They pray every day. They have many styles of prayer but they make it a point to pray on a regular basis and not just Sunday Mass and grace before meals. So pray for and with your new pastor. Make sure you know you’re praying for him. Dynamic Catholics are GENEROUS. Yes, it’s about the envelopes to an extent. I worked with what you gave me. Fr. Pawelko will do the same. So if you want stuff to happen, give him the tools to make it happen. That includes cash and it includes commitment. Give him your time and your abilities like so many of you have shared with me. Make the Bazaar the easiest thing to run because there are so many people to do the work. Make others feel welcome and cared for because there are so many in the liturgical and service ministries and teaching CCD. Dynamic Catholics are LEARNERS. They didn’t let their growth in the faith stop at college, or 12th grade at LC or 8th grade at SASH or the end of CCD. They are willing to pick up a book or watch a video or go to a continuing formation experience. Do that with Fr. Pawelko. When he hosts something, show up. If he stays committed to FORMED, you stay committed to FORMED. (Did you sign up for FORMED???) Remember to learn from him and all our priests and deacons here at OLSH. And never be afraid to ask questions. Dynamic Catholics are EVANGELIZERS. Yes, sometimes that means going out with the Legion of Mary on an E-day. But 99% of the time it means being positive in your discussion about our faith, it means sharing that book you learned from and mostly it means INVITING others, maybe especially those Chreasters, who could get so much out of living their discipleship but they need to be invited. Fr. Pawelko probably isn’t going to be able to go door to door any more than I could—there’s a lot of you out there. But like I just said, there’s a lot of you out there. And just go to one door, or one soccer field or basketball court or one supermarket. When we all do that, think how much the message gets spread. That’s what Dynamic Catholics do. That’s who Dynamic Catholics are. My goal was to help get all of us a little closer to that. I hope I made some progress. That torch is now passed to Fr. Pawelko. But it’s also passed on to you. Live your discipleship and know my prayers will be with you and please keep me in yours. God be with you. Always. 03-033
