Lunchtime Lectures Immerse yourself in history, art and culture at our popular Lunchtime Lectures. Doors open at 12.45. Thursdays 13.15 £4/£3 7 June Modernists & Mavericks: Bacon, Freud, Hockney & the London Painters Writer Martin Gayford explores the development of painting in post-war London and the interlinking friendships, rivalries and artistic concerns among a number of acclaimed artists. Revealing the influence of teachers on the London painters including David Bomberg, whose work appears in the Gallery’s current display One Unbroken Stream alongside that of his student Frank Auerbach. 21 June Free Spirit: George Charles Beresford, Portrait Photographer, Aesthete and Feminist
Art historian Dr Vivien Gaston explores the photographer behind one of the most widely admired British portraits, the haunting depiction of Virginia Woolf, 1902. George Charles Beresford, whilst little known, photographed many prominent and provocative politicians, artists, thinkers and writers of the early 20th century. From his schooldays with Rudyard Kipling to the glamour of London society and his support of radical feminists, Beresford’s life reflects the tensions of wider social change and reform. 5 July War to Windrush: Black Women in Britain 1939 – 48 Historian Stephen Bourne presents an illustrated talk about some of the black women who are featured in his latest book. These include Elisabeth Welch, Josephine Baker, Eartha Kitt and Winifred Atwell, all of whom are represented in the Gallery’s Collection. 19 July The Byron Ladies: Icons and Outcasts
Biographer Miranda Seymour examines how the poet’s wife was trashed, then elevated and then smashed by the Victorian press, whilst her daughter Ada disappeared from public consciousness for almost a hundred years after her death until her reputation was saved by Alan Turing. 2 August Radical women in portraits Researcher Georgia Haseldine introduces the radical eighteenthcentury women who first fought for the rights of woman and paved the way for the women’s suffrage movement. The radical ideas of Britain’s first feminists are revealed in the gestures and fashions captured in their portraits. 16 August Take Six Girls: The Lives of the Mitford Sisters Writer Laura Thompson looks at the wildly contrasting lives of the Mitford sisters – stylish, scandalous and tragic by turns – which hold up a revelatory mirror to upper-class English life before and after the Second World War.
