Collectors, gallerists, artists, art enthusiasts, − an inaugural museum partnership with the Govett-Brewster Art media and other partners came to celebrate and showcase the Gallery / Len Lye Centre enabling the presentation of Len Lye’s out st and in g c o n t e m p o r a r y a r t o f A o tea ro a Pa cif ic R im regio n. GALLERIES AT THE FAIR Auckland Art Fair attracted 33 galleries to TOTAL GALLERY SALES AS A RESULT OF AUCKLAND ART FAIR $10 MILLION+ the main section of the Fair and five artist- * run spaces in a new section, In Residence, on the mezzanine floor of The Cloud. IN RESIDENCE I n R e s i d e n c e w a s a n e w i n i t i a t i v e f o r a r t i s t - r u n s p a c e s t o p re s e n t a t t h e A r t F a i r o n the M ezza nine o f The Clo ud. While the Art Fair has s upported emerging artis ts through Piki Mai: Up Here ^^ since 2018 and the Projects programme since 2016, In Residence provided curatorial support for each artist-run space and helped ensure tha t the f ull co st o f pa rticipa tion was covered for eac h booth through s uc c es s fully spea rhea ding a Bo o sted cro w d funding campaign. T h e s p a c e s w h i c h s h o w e d w e r e m o t h e r m o t h e r, P a r a s i t e , R M G a l l e r y & P r o j e c t S p a c e , S a t c h i & S a t c h i & S a t c h i a n d We t G re e n . E a c h u n i q u e i n t h e w a y s t h e y o p e r a t e , t h e y f o r m a v i b r a n t a n d i m p o r t a n t p a r t o f A o t e a ro a ’s a r t e c o l o g y a n d help pro vide a n essentia l o ppo rtunity for experimentation with ex hibition- making a nd a rt pra ctice, bringing energy and a new pers pec tive to their pres entations . In Residence was facilitated by Becky Hemus, a writer and curator based in Tā ma ki M a ka ura u w ho is a lso a c o- founder of Wet G reen and May Fair Art Fair. In Residence included artist talks and a commissioned text was distributed alongside each presentation. These are now available on the Art Fair website. SCULPTURE SPACE For the first time, the Fair included an o u t d o o r S c u l p t u re S p a c e o v e r l o o k i n g t h e Waitematā Harbour. This area was enjoyed b y v i s i t o r s , w h o w e re a b l e t o s p e n d t i m e outside at the Fair drinking and eating a m o n g t h e s c u l p t u re s . W h i l e t h e re w e re no immediate sales of the sculptural works, it is anticipated that the exhibition will lead t o sa l es o v e r t i m e . VIPS AT THE FAIR “ A s a c o m p l e t e “ o u t s i d e r ” t o t h e a r t w o r l d , p re v i o u s l y I would have been intimidated by entering that type of space. T h e m o re t h e a r t f a i r d o e s t o b re a k d o w n t h o s e “ b a r r i e r s ” the better. It was good to see gallery owners, artists with “the people”. GALLERY DINNER 165 guests attended the third Auckland Art Fair dinner, held on the ev ening b e f o r e O p e n i n g D a y. P a r t i c i p a t i n g gallery directors, collectors, curators, mus eum directors , and artis ts joined in antic ipation of the art that would be presented the next day at the Fair and to c elebrate the outs tanding art of Aotearoa and the wider Pacific- Rim region. The seated dinner took place throughout the laneway s and s pac es of kingi and The Hotel Britomart, with a meal created for the occasion by Tom Hishon and his team, complimented by wines presented by Art Fair partners, Seres in Es tate. MUSEUM PARTNER Auckland Art Fair 2021 saw the inauguration of a museum p a r t n e r s h i p w i t h t h e G o v e t t - B re w s t e r A r t G a l l e r y / L e n Ly e C e n t re , N e w Z e a l a n d ’s f o re m o s t c o n t e m p o r a r y a r t m u s e u m a nd g l ob a l h o m e o f t h e w o r k a n d l ega cy o f pio neering Kiw i artist Len Lye. Through this partnership and with support from Tec hni x a n d o t h e r p a r t n e r s f ro m Ta ra na ki Gro up, the A rt Fa ir wa s p l ea s e d t o p re s e n t L e n Ly e ’s B ig Bla de a t the entra nce, free f or a l l t o e x p e r i e n c e a n d e n j o y. Big Blade is one of Lye’s for mative kinetic sculptures, inspired by the artist’s ability to shake materials like steel and find the natural modes of vibration. Conceived in 1959 and constructed in 1997, we were proud to show this work at the 2021 Art Fair - the first time in more than 10 years that a major kinetic work b y L en Ly e h a s b e e n s e e n i n A u c k l and. NGĀTAHI CHANCE Each year the Art Fair offers one stand on the ground floor of the Fair to Ngātahi, a collaboration of Auckland arts organisations Artspace ENCOUNTERS | A o tea ro a , Gus Fis her G allery, Objec ts pac e, ST PAUL St G allery, Te Tuhi a nd Te U ru – to us e as they would like. The galleries welcome this opportunity to meet with Art Fair visitors who may not regularly GUIDED TOURS enga ge w ith the public galleries of Tāmaki Makaurau Auck land and to build new networks of vis itors and s upporters . OF THE FAIR In 2021 Ngātahi designed a stand to “welcome visitors into an unfolding framework of collective ingenuity that foregrounds books a s a s o u rc e o f a r t i s t i c i n s p i r a t i o n . Wo r k i n g w i t h l e a d i n g A o t e a ro a New Zealand-based artist Judy Millar, we are proud to introduce the Judy M illa r Bo ok Collec tion, featuring book s s ugges ted by artis ts a nd crea tives f rom around the globe. ” Rendered as a space of critical dialogue and collaboration, the b o o t h re f l e c t e d t h e i n f l u e n c e s t h a t f u e l c re a t i v i t y a n d c e l e b r a t e d the moments of chance encounters with others whose ideas may ultima tely sha pe our own. V isito rs to the booth were inv ited to brows e the J udy Millar B ook Co llectio n f o r re ading, purchas e and enjoyment, and s hare a chat with a curator over a board game and a coffee. The space was designed by Sajeev Ruthra to allow for scheduled and unscheduled group activities and discussions to take place. “Maybe you’ll meet a person, or a book, or a book recommended by a person, by chance. CURATORIAL WORKSHOP For the first time, the Art Fair offered a three-day curatorial workshop for early-career curators / artists. Convened by Christina Ba r t on (di re c t o r A d a m A r t Ga l l e r y Te Pa ta ka Toi), Micheal Do (curator Contemporary Visual Art, Sydney Opera House and Projects 2021) a n d C h l o e G e o g h e g a n , ( c u r a t o r a t Te U r u Waitākere Contemporary Gallery) the workshop was designed to take full advantage of the confluence of people and plethora of events t ha t t ak e p l a c e i n a n d a ro u n d t h e Art Fa ir. CREATIVE WORKSHOPS SQUIGGLA MAKING SPACE The 2021 Fair built on the previous successes of drop-in workshops for families, by partnering with Squiggla – a programme for all ages which focuses on the playful use of dots, lines and squiggles, encouraging everyone, however old or young, to connect with creative visual thinking. The Squiggla Making Space on the mezzanine floor, invited the old and the young, and everyone in between, to play, be curious and to exercise their creative thinking skills through the power of joyful mark-making. Squiggla is a creative thinking programme that exercises the creative mind through mark-making. Designed as a non-judgemental activity for people of all ages, Squiggla uses the power of direct, free- f lo w ing ma rk-making. It is a tool that rec ognis es creative think ing is important for everyone. BOOKSHOP The Auckland Art Fair bookshop was again organised and managed by independent curator and writer, Victoria McAdam, offering visitors the opportunity to browse and purchase a selection of outstanding art books. Alongside new publishing from New Zealand’s leading galleries, university presses, design studios, artists, and independent publishers, the 2021 bookshop featured a selection of photo-books from the personal library of John B. Turner, a key figure in the history of photography in New Zealand.
