The 45 Informer What's happening at Bert Hodge Post 45 June 2019 Vol. 6 Issue. 6 Commander’s Corner by Commander Ken Moore This has been another busy month. I want to thank everyone for all their hard work. Lester and I attended the Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony at Ravine Gardens. It was a wonderful event. We had a very successful yard sale and BBQ to raise funds for the Community Appreciation Dinner. I want to thank everyone for the donations for the yard sale and for helping with the BBQ and thank you to Jr Auxiliary member Haylie who raised $62.50 from her bake sale. She donated the money to be used for the Community Appreciation Dinner on May 31st. We have handed out complimen- tary dinner tickets to 29 combined individuals and businesses who all agreed to attend. Please put Friday, May 31st on your calendar and plan to attend and thank them for all the help we have received during the year. We also participated in placing flags at graves of veterans in our local cemeteries. Sunday, the 26th of May, we par- ticipated in a Memorial Ceremony at Memorial Gardens at 2pm followed by the Memorial Day Parade on Monday. Planning and putting the parade together took a lot of work. Thank you to all those involved. Remember June is the time to elect officers for the 2019-2020 year so plan to attend and take part. June dinner will be an Officer Appreciation/Fathers Day Dinner. We will recognize all those who held an office in the legion this year. This is a small way of saying thank you for all your hard work and making this year, our 100th year, a successful and produc- tive one. Let’s continue to work together as post family so we can continue moving forward. Remember to also think before you speak. Negative comments do not create a positive atmosphere. Continue to respect one another and our post. On this Memorial Day I hope you took the time to remember those who gave their all. They are the reason we have a post and the freedoms we enjoy today. Remember them everyday and honor their sacrifice-honor them thru your ac- tions and protect what they died defending. Thank you for your support and God Bless Auxiliary President's Comments by President Linda Sliter May was very busy month with all our yard sales and the bake sales held by our Junior Haylie. I want to thank Pat Hunt for setting up our membership table at these different functions. We had our monthly meeting where we held elec- tion of new 2019-2020 officers and finalized plans for our May dinner. We served smothered Chopped Steak cooked by Pat Hunt and Marilynn Gauthier. Sandee Heineman helped plate the food. Thank you also to all that served the food and helped clean up following the delicious meal. We held a dessert auction to raise funds for our Department President’s project, Final Salute. This project helps homeless female veterans and all monies raised stay here in the state of Florida. Many attended the Veterans Appreciation Dinner hosted by the Hillcrest Baptist Church during the Freedom Fest. It was a wonderful dinner and I want to thank those ladies who helped with our membership table. A BBQ and yard sale was held to help raise funds to support the Appreciation Dinner coming up on May 31st at 5 pm. Thank you to Pat Hunt who set up and ran the Auxiliary membership table. I attended our Constitutional Conference and we elected our District President for the upcoming year. Toni Ellsworth was elected the new District 17 President. The next meeting will be held on June 13th. Hope to see everyone there. Election of 2019-2020 Legion Officers Just a reminder that at our June monthly meeting we will be electing our Legion 2019-2020 officers. We are looking forward to electing our Commander, 1st Vice, Treasurer and many more positions. So if you would like to be an officer, please contact your Commander for the names of the nominating committee members.. Remember we are always looking for new members to hold the officer positions. Thank you.

The History of American Legion Post 45 By Historian Curtis Bennett Tragically, Bert was hit by an incoming high explosive air burst shrapnel shell and died instantly after being struck in the heart. His buddy, Lew Barstow, from Palatka, crawled through the German barrage and waited for the firing to stop, and then carried Bert his best friend back to the American lines to a little churchyard, at St. Thibaut, a commune in Northern France, where he was buried. The two had enlisted together. Bert was 27 years old. His remains were brought home after the war where he was laid to rest in a local cemetery named Oak Hill East Cemetery, two years after his death. Again, Bert Hodge was Putnam County’s first casualty of World War I. In honor of his sacrifice, the Howell Theater planned a memorial for Bert Hodge, “Putnam County’s young martyr for civilization and democracy.” The memorial service called for prayers led by reverends Savell, Grady and MacQueen and remarks by Judge Calhoun. It was members of American Legion Post 45 who paid homage to Bert Hodge by naming their newly formed post after him. It all began on a cool November night in Palatka, Florida. It was the 1 st of November, to be exact, when a meeting was held at the court- house that Friday at 8:30pm for the purpose of organizing those who were in service during the first Great War into a Palatka Post of the American Legion. All soldiers, sailors, red cross nurses or other actively-enlisted in the military forces during the war were en- couraged to attend. In addition to the organization of the post it was important that some action be taken on the question of bonus for service men, so that a report could be made to the national convention. The convention was scheduled to be held in Minneapolis on November 10, 11, and the 12th, at which time the one absorbing question of bonuses would be taken up. On the agenda of the con- vention was the establishment of the permanency of the American Legion, the announcement of a future course along the lines laid down at St Louis and Paris, as artified or modified by the members of the organization, the election of permanent officers; the adop- tion of permanent policies of the organization, down through the state branches and the local posts; methods of routine procedure; membership questions of eligibility and transfer; and nomenclature of post, state, and national officers; location of national head- quarters, location of national headquarters, and other matters of organizational detail held in abeyance at the time. (This is part 5 of a new series on the history of the founding of The American Legion 100 years ago.)

The American Legion Bert Hodge Centennial Post 45 would like to thank all participants and volunteers who helped make the Memorial Day Parade a huge success. Memorial Day honors all fallen veterans from all walks of life and cultures. The parade had many military organizations and vehicles present as well as city and county businesses and youth groups. Following the parade there was a humble ceremony at the river front. Many veteran organizations gave tribute to the sacrifice these veterans gave for the free- dom we enjoy today. Songs were sung, poems read and Commander Ken was the guest speaker. Veterans from each of the wars were recognized for their service. Following the ceremony, the Kiwanis Club served hamburgers, hot dogs, sides and drinks to guests at Post 45. It was great being served in our post by such a wonderful, caring team of people. Thank you! If you were unable to watch the parade, Ted Rodda video taped it and posted it on our American Legion Bert Hodge Facebook page. We want to thank all of the citizens who showed their support for our veterans that are now serving, have served and future service men and women. Remember them everyday and thank them for their service and the freedoms you enjoy. In Loving Memory – All Gave Some and Some Gave All! Please give to Pat Hunt or Pat Andries or leave in the newsletter box with your name, who they are related to and how related—i.e. father, son, grandfather, me. Also copies of male Legion members in uniform if available (if I haven’t already received them). Please have them to us by Wednesday, June 12th. Sooner if possible so we can prepare. Thank you for your support! ***** Open to the Public ***** Eat in or take out. Call 386-328-6976 for take out. ******************************************************************** Our post is a “non-smoking post” and guests and members DO NOT want to walk thru a cloud of smoke to come in. There are now signs on the door that prohibit smoking within 20 feet of the front door. There is a receptacle by the building to collect your cigarette butts and keep them off the grounds. Remember that your smoke may also attach to you or your clothes so please brush off before entering the building. Keep the smoke outside and away from the building doors. If you see trash on the ground or in the building, please pick it up and dispose of it in the trash. Please be considerate of others.
