Places of Leisure INTRODUCTION LEIDEN HERITAGE OPEN DAYS LEIDEN Visit 37 monuments in Leiden / During the weekend of September 14-15th, 2019, 37 monumental buildings in Leiden open their doors to the public. This is a unique opportunity to visit old places rich with history, ancient homes and university buildings. In many monuments there are small exhibitions and performances by Leiden choirs. This year’s theme is ‘Places of leisure’. Discover the places where the people of Leiden traditionally went to relax and have fun. In this brochure you will find an overview of all the monuments that are open to the public, tips for your visit and a map of the city indicating where the monuments are located. TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT Opening hours / The opening hours are Saturday from 12 noon until 5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., unless oth- erwise noted in the list of monuments. Information / The central information point during the Heritage Days can be found in Leiden City Hall (Breestraat 94- 96). www.openmonumentendagenleiden.nl offers an overview of all monuments and their locations (website is in Dutch). Visiting historical buildings / Not all buildings that are open to the public are designed for large numbers of visitors. You may have to wait to visit certain buildings. The organization requests your understanding and cooperation. Visiting the monuments is at your own risk. Please follow the instructions of the staff. Accessibility / Unfortunately not all buildings are accessible to wheelchair users. Accessible buildings are indicated by this icon A. CITY HALL (INFO POINT) Open / SAT SUN sat 10 am-5 pm A N KB BREESTRAAT 94-96, entrance main staircase City Hall is the heart of the city. It has a beautiful interior and a Renaissance façade. 02. FORMER CAFÉ NEUF Open / SAT SUN I BREESTRAAT 107 For 60 years this building housed a famous café. The oldest parts date from the fourteenth century. 03. REGIONAL WATER MANAGEMENT BUILDING Open / SAT SUN ± KN BREESTRAAT 59 For four centuries, this building has been the seat of the regional water management board. 04. CITY MUSIC HALL Open / SAT SUN AKINE BREESTRAAT 60 This theatre is an impressive example of Neo-Renais- sance architecture. 05. noon-5 pm A N E TRIANON THEATRE Open / SAT SUN B BREESTRAAT 31 This second oldest cinema in the Netherlands was a residential home until 1927. 06. STUDENT SOCIETY MINERVA Open / SUN IN BREESTRAAT 50 View the library, theatre and squash room of the oldest student society in the Netherlands. 07. STUDENT SOCIETY QUINTUS Open / SAT SUN I BOOMMARKT 5A This student society is located in an old telephone exchange building. ± A IE 08. HOTEL NIEUW MINERVA Open / SAT BOOMMARKT 23 Hotel spanning several historic buildings that were used as warehouses. 09. HET LEIDSE VOLKSHUIS Open / SUN noon-5 pm A K E B APOTHEKERSDIJK 33A This community center was used starting in 1899 to increase the development and sense of happiness of the unemployed through courses. 10. CITY THEATRE Open / SUN AIE F OUDE VEST 43 Oldest theatre in the Netherlands with a horseshoe- shaped hall in festive Neo-Baroque style. 11. IMPERIUM THEATRE Open / SUN KE OUDE VEST 33E Small theatre in a surprising location. LEIDEN/4

MUSEUM DE LAKENHAL sat Open / SAT SUN sat 10 am-5 pm A N E FB OUDE SINGEL 32 Museum located in a seventeenth-century city palace that was once the bustling center of the Leiden cloth trade. 13. FORMER COACH HOUSE Open / SAT SUN I LAMMERMARKT 63 Former coach house with large double doors and wooden shutters for airing hay. Under construction. 14. WINDMILL MUSEUM DE VALK Open / SAT SUN sat 10 am-5 pm sun 1 pm-5 pm FB 2E BINNENVESTGRACHT In this 29-meter-high scaffolding mill from 1743, grain was milled into flour for two centuries. ±AIN 15. SKITTLE-ALLEY AMICITIA Open / SAT 2E BINNENVESTEGRACHT 19 In this building from 1898, reminiscent of a Swiss chalet, there is still a wooden bowling alley. 16. FORMER CITY WASTE INCINERATOR AND TRANSFORMER STATION Open / SAT SUN ±ANF LANGEGRACHT 70C & 70D Former waste incinerator, now a stonemason’s workplace and a brewery. ±AIK 17. CHURCH MAREKERK Open / SAT LANGE MARE 48 Unusual eight-sided dome church from 1649. 18. CITADEL BURCHT Open / SAT SUN sun noon-5 pm FB NEXT TO BURGSTEEG 13 After serving a military function until the seventeenth century, the Burcht is now a place for relaxation in the heart of the city. 19. HOOGLANDSEKERK Open / SAT AK NIEUWSTRAAT 26C Since the seventeenth century there were organ concerts in this church to entertain people and keep them out of the bars. 20. CAFÉ DE BONTE KOE Open / SAT SUN noon-5 pm E B HOOGLANDSEKERK CHOORSTEEG 13 You can see from the beautiful tiles that this café was originally designed as a butcher shop. ±AIN 21. ARS AEMULA NATURAE Open / SAT SUN PIETERSKERKGRACHT 9 This drawing and painting academy houses a beautifully painted cassette ceiling from 1653. ±A 22. GYMNASTICS SCHOOL Open / SAT SUN PIETERSKERKGRACHT 7 The first Leiden gymnastics school from 1860 is still used solely for sports. 23. STUDENT SOCIETY AUGUSTINUS Open / SUN I RAPENBURG 24 The impressive facility from the eighteenth century of the members of the student society Augustinus. 24. PIETERSKERK Open / SAT SUN AKNE F PIETERSKERKHOF 1 A / KLOKSTEEG 16A The people of Leiden have been coming to this church for almost nine hundred years to get married, baptize and celebrate special moments. OVERVIEW BUILDINGS LEIDEN 25. ACADEMY BUILDING Open / SAT SUN AIK RAPENBURG 73 The oldest and most beautiful building of Leiden University. Here take place graduation ceremonies and lectures. 26. BOTANICAL GARDENS Open / SAT SUN ANE FB KAISERSTRAAT 1 The oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands is an oasis of green where there is much to enoy and discover. 27. CAFÉ L’ESPÉRANCE Open / SAT SUN 13 pm-17 pm A E B KAISERSTRAAT 1 The history of this café and its regular guests can be seen in the many prints and photos on the walls. 28. STUDENT SOCIETY CATENA Open / SAT A KOLFMAKERSTREEG 8 This student society is located in a former printing company. 29. GARDEN ROOM AND CONSERVATORY Open / SAT SUN I HERENSTEEG, DOORWAY OPPOSITE NO. 29 The garden room is beautifully painted with imaginative, idealized landscapes. 30. FORMER ROMAN CATHOLIC READING LIBRARY Open / SAT SUN I STEENSCHUUR 17 House from the eighteenth century, converted in the 1960’s into a Roman Catholic reading library. 31. FORMER DWELLING OF PIET PAALTJENS Open / SAT SUN I HOGEWOERD 63 Former dwelling of 19th century student writer and poet Piet Paaltjens. House under construction. 32. ROWING CLUB DIE LEYTHE Open / SUN A MORSWEG 148 One of the three rowing clubs in Leiden is opening its doors to the public this weekend. 33. PLAYGROUND WESTERKWARTIER Open / SAT SUN 11 am-5 pm A E FB TEN KATESTRAAT 10A Hidden between houses and behind a monumental gate, this playground has existed for more than ninety years. 34. MARIA MIDDELARESKERK Open / SAT SUN sun 1 pm-5 pm A K B RIJNDIJK 283 Modestly built church due to the scarcity of building materi- als following the Second World War. Nevertheless, ceremo- nial and monumental. 35. ENGELBERTHA HOEVE Open / SAT SUN ±A HOGE MORSWEG 140 This former farm was for years a restaurant and party location. 36. HUIZE RHIJNHOF Open / SUN I RHIJNHOFWEG 4 Country retreat from the eighteenth century. 37.
