A Note From The General Manager Club Staff Greetings and Welcome to October…one of my most Mike Zadalis favorite times of the year! As I’m writing this, we are PGA General Manager just hours away from starting the 2021 Ryder Cup. This Chief Operating Officer is one of my all-time favorite sporting events of the year (well every other year anyway). I was fortunate to attend Bobby O’Keefe two Ryder Cups in my lifetime and they are some of my PGA Director of Golf greatest memories. Go USA USA USA!!! Also, this time of the year is the thick of the College football season, Jonathan Mielke NFL, High school football (Friday Night Lights), and High PGA Director of Instruction school and College Volleyball. Add some of the best weather and best course conditions and how can you not Justin Herron love this time of year! Head Golf Professional I would like to take this time to personally THANK all the Sam Martin members that volunteer their time, expertise, and many First Assistant Golf Professional hours helping to make Oak Hills be as great as it is! The Dan Maddox Board of Directors, all the member committees, WGA, Director of Grounds MGA, TMGL, Ladies leagues, Inner clubs, Rally for Cure, Divot Filling Parties, Swim meet timers, and so many Andy Rhylander other volunteers that donate their time to help make all our events successful! To say we Golf Course Superintendent appreciate you so much is an understatement. THANK YOU! Ashley Dougherty Our August financials went a little bit backwards as some timing issues on expenses caught up Director of Membership & Marketing to us, but we are still doing well. Please click here for more details on financials. Olivia Lynes I would also like to thank our core staff and management Team as we are so short staffed with Office Administrator over 75% of our total staff going back to school and no longer able to help us. The Team has rallied together, worked longer hours, helped each other out, and busted their tails to make Becky Rohwer sure we are still able to deliver great service, great quality, and well executed events. Please Systems Facilitator take the time to tell them Thank You – your appreciation goes a long way in keeping them motivated. Brian Shields Director of Food & Beverage We have completed all the big projects for the year with the exception of 3 more weirs (dams) in the creek on #13/#17/#10 that will be completed this Winter. The new tennis viewing deck Candy Mapes Events Manager looks fantastic and will be multi useful for the pool as well, the new drop-down wind screens on the patio will be a great new addition along with the heaters that will greatly extend your Jacob Wuestewald ability to enjoy the patio for several more weeks/months. We are almost done with the Capital Assistant Food & Beverage Director Improvement Budget and projects for 2022 and once approved by the Board I will be happy to share with the entire membership. Zach Chingren Executive Chef Your feedback is always welcome and encouraged, and if your experience isn’t perfect or up to your expectations, please ask for a manger on duty right away and give us the opportunity to Wilfred Ambrosio fix it or improve it for you. Please don’t wait for two weeks to notify us, because by then there Sous Chef isn’t anything we can do to make it better. Tom Lilly Thank you and looking forward to a great Fall and Winter seasons! The Board President Letter Welcome to the official start of the Fall season. I personally think the summer went pretty well! We were able to get back to some normalcy and hosting a lot of golf and social events. All these events were well attended, and the staff did a good job executing them. The pool was packed all summer long and I heard many comments and compliments for both the lifeguard staff and the food and beverage pool service. Thank you to all the members for your support, patronage, and participating in all the events, you are what keeps this Club going and successful. We have a great grasp and plan on our Capital improvements and projects for 2022 that we will share with you once the Board approves it, as well as some other good plans for operational upgrades and improve- ments. We are all very excited for the future of Oak Hills. Membership is still completely full with both Golf and Social membership waiting lists at more than 35 people waiting to join our fun Club. The Board of Directors is making a big push to get the entire membership on automatic monthly pay- ments. You have two options with either setting up direct ACH payment through your bank, or you have your credit card automatically charged each month. The credit card does come with the 3% convenience fee, but you also get to benefit by getting your points, miles, or cash back depending on what credit card you use. With either option you will still get a monthly Club statement sent to you that you will be able to look at and verify all the charges and as always contact the club office to question or contest any charges. Please click here to complete the Automatic Payment form or stop by the main office. Please always be professional, courteous, and respectful of all staff and fellow members each and every time you are enjoying the Club. It’s our people and the laid back, fun, non-pretentious, and respectful culture that makes our Club so special! Looking forward to a great Fall and Winter season! Hope to see you soon and often at the Club. Sincerely Congratulations on their September Holes in Todd Carey One to Ingrid Delaet on #4 and Scott Oak Hills Inc. Board President Voorhees on #2! WELCOME TO OUR SEPTEMBER NEW MEMBERS! Joal and Jordan Sochor
Member Testimonials Hi Mike, My family have been members at Oak Hills for the last 5 years and I want to take a moment to commend the pool servers this summer! They were excellent — always on the spot to ask if I needed a drink or food at my pool chair and to serve it quickly with a smile and fun attitude. I know how hard it is to find good summer help at times for jobs like these, and I just wanted to say that this summer’s group was by far the best since we’ve been with your club. Most definitely a job well done! Julie Good morning all, Just wanted to say thank you again for the invite to this event. I appreciate the thought. Really had a good time. See you all around the club! Thanks, Craig Mike, I just wanted to say thank you for a great summer pool experience! I went almost every day for my lunch hour and just enjoyed the staff and life guards. They were great! Today I finished off the season by bringing my two grandchildren and we had a blast! Thank you so much! Sincerely, Donna Tom, It's been such a wonderful experience meeting you and your wife and playing tennis at Oak Hills! I enjoyed it so much. Everyone is so lovely and welcoming and kind! You've worked so hard this summer! I wish you well in your upcoming Creighton year - I hope you had enough of a rest in New York last week. Thank you so much for all you do! I had a great summer playing tennis! :) Sincerely, Donna Mike: Just a brief note to let you know that we had a very successful golf outing and dinner yesterday thanks to the OHCC staff. Bobby and Sam were a big help in putting the golf together and the meal afterwards was great. There were many positive comments about the food and Heather did a great job with the service. I’m sure you hear complaints when things don’t go just right so I thought you should also hear about something that went exceptionally well. My compliments to everyone involved. Fred
News From your Oak Hills Management Teams... Golf: Don’t put the clubs away just yet, October is one of the best month’s to play golf and now that aerification has been completed, the course is healing and conditions will be perfect for fall golf. With that being said, it is extremely important to continue to repair ball marks on the greens and fill your divots with sand in the fairways. As the temperatures continue to go down, these areas that are not fixed or repaired properly will show come spring. One area that I would like to re-iterate to our membership is regarding pace of play policies at our club. I am bringing this up again as a reminder since daylight hours are getting less and players are wanting to finish in a reasonable time. A good rule of thumb for those that walk and don’t have the pace of play notifications from the GPS units like our carts have, is you should be completed through hole #5, one hour from your tee time and through hole #6 in 1 hour and 20 minutes. The same would hold true on checkpoints on the back nine. Players should be completed through hole #14, 3 hours into your round. Again, these are checkpoints to help guide you through your round and are put into place so everyone can enjoy the day. One last tidbit, always look ahead of you, never behind you. Players that get tired of waiting will just fall back and the pace of play becomes a domino effect and worsens. Thanks for your cooperation. As always, please stop into your golf shop to see all the new fall apparel. Some of these items include but not limited to our local sports teams with new Nebraska and Creighton gear for Men and Women and some great holiday gifts ideas are coming in soon. Be sure to watch for informa- tion coming out soon on end of the year liquidation sale which always seems to be well attended. Last but not least, congratulations to Steve Williams and Mark Suing for winning the First Annual Sr. Member-Guest, “Old Hickory” event. Appreci- ate everyone playing this year, and it will be even bigger and better next year! Bobby O'Keefe PGA Director of Golf Food & Beverage: Hello to the best members in town! First off, on behalf of all our staff I want to say thank you for an amazing summer. We introduced a few new events and the response to them was amazing. Fall is now here and we can’t wait to finish the year off on a strong note. The addition of our new wind screens and heaters on the patio will increase more days for patio seating this season, so take advantage of that! Make sure to sign up for our upcoming events, you won’t want to miss out on the fun. Bourbon & Cigars, Murder Mys- tery, Booze & Boos adult Halloween party and the kids Halloween party are just some to save the dates for! Cheers, Jacob Wuestewald Assistant Director Food & Beverage Grounds: Fall is here and we’re still having some 90-degree days, but overall it is beautiful and very appreciated. I have been receiving emails concerning the overall quality of our rough. Yes, there is an issue with the amount of knotweed grow- ing and I would like to share what it is and our plan to improve the rough. First, knotweed prefers dry, hard packed soils. We see it along cart path edges, cart traffic areas and in some shade. Once turf grass declines, knotweed will take over. The best solution is to grow a thick stand of grass along with proper irrigation, soil compaction relief and pre and post emergent chemicals. The timing with these chemical applications is very import- ant. Knotweed is an annual weed and germinates in early March, basically after the snow melts. The best timing of the application will be in November with Barricade, a pre-emergent herbicide. This is a long- lasting chemical and will be in full concentration in March, ready to control the germinating knotweed seed. Plus, any break- through knotweed will be controlled with a post emer- gent broadleaf herbicide. Then in the fall, we’ll continue to overseed areas with fescue to produce a thicker rough. Currently, we have been aerifying and seeding the large patches of knotweed and in late November, we’ll apply the pre-emergent herbicide. This includes the areas we seeded and all the smaller patches throughout the golf course. Other programs for the fall include top dressing greens, tees, and fairways, spraying for broadleaf weeds, deep tine aerification on tees and fair- ways, sod and seed bare spots through-out the rough, repairing bunker faces with new sod, tree pruning, stump grinding, and removing the stone curb on 4 tee cart path. Hope everyone enjoyed the summer, and we look forward to a beautiful Nebraska fall. Stay healthy. Dan Maddox Director of Grounds
Chef Notes Its October, the leaves are changing and the temperature is starting to cool off. Fall is my favorite season, the cooler days are opportune for afternoon motorcycle rides through the hills in iowa, or to spend the evening sitting around the fire pit. Football season is in full swing and the huskers are either well on their way to a great season or breaking our hearts again. October is also the time when we change our menu and shift into more fall and winter cuisines. Look for the changes coming soon. There will be a lot of new dishes but your favorites will still be available. Make sure you get out and enjoy all the wonderful fall events the club has to offer.
