JUFC Junior News Our National Premier League (NPL) Juniors had home games against Fremantle City last Sunday with mixed results but some good performances overall. Our 13s put in a great showing to beat Fremantle 4-0 but the 13s, who were understrength due to injuries, went down 3-0. The 15s had a 3-3 draw and were unlucky not to win as the visitors’ equaliser came with the last kick of the game at Prince Regent Park. It was a narrow 2-1 defeat for the 16s who put in a spirited showing and we unlucky not to claim a point for their endeavours. On behalf of all involved with the Juniors, we wish everyone a happy and safe Easter. Ian Munro, Technical Director Family Fun Day 2018 Joondalup United’s annual Family Fun Day took place at Charonia Reserve last Sunday and was a massive success thanks to a great turnout from across the club. The Amateurs and Masters went head-to-head in three good spirited contests, with the Amateur Division One first team winning back the Bob Kenchington Trophy in the main game. “Charonia was rocking with the kind of family atmosphere we strive to achieve at JUFC,” said Vice President Peter Rustidge. “All the staff were run off their feet but when you got a minute to catch your breath and look around it was a great feeling. A number of inflatable rides and an appearance from Joondalup Joe kept the kids entertained, while the sausage sizzle was on the go as DJ Andy Knights kept the tunes pumping for the duration. “This is the Joondalup United people need to see,” said Rustidge. “So many local kids asked if they could use the slides and the answer was always yes; I could be wrong but not many other clubs put days like this on for free.” All sections of the club were well represented on the day and it was the perfect curtain raiser for what promises to be another exciting season for JUFC. First Team Coach’s Notes Having suffered a fifth straight league defeat last Saturday in a 7-2 reverse at Floreat Athena, we return to Percy Doyle for a home clash with a buoyant Cockburn City outfit fresh from a victory over the reigning premiers and current table toppers Bayswater City. I’d like to welcome Scott, his players, management team and the officials of Cockburn City to Percy Doyle Reserve for our first Saturday 3 o’clock kick off this season. If last year’s games are anything to go by then all spectators should sit tight until the final whistle. Though both league clashes ended in deadlock they were very close, hard fought battles, with last minute equalisers scores in each. We fought back from two down at half time and equalised with the last kick of the game and then, in the second meeting, a dubious penalty earned Cockburn a deserved share of the spoils. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to work out that we desperately need to kick start our season and get our first points on the board. I personally don’t believe we are as bad as our league position would have you believe, but individual errors at both ends of the field have cost us dearly. Once again, we have prepared well at training on Tuesday and Thursday for today’s challenge. We will have a real go and leave no stone unturned as we go looking for victory. Finally, good luck to all JUFC teams young and old in action over this Easter weekend. JUFCTID Nick Jennings JUFC First Team Coach Joondalup United v Cockburn City - March 31, 2018
A Message from The President Joondalup United welcomes the players, supporters and officials of Cockburn City to Percy Doyle Reserve this afternoon. Having stayed afloat in our first National Premier League (NPL) season, season number two is shaping up to be another really tough one. After council plans to create the club’s own NPL compliant facility ready for the 2018 season fell through, the club has been left homeless once again. The added cost pressures of playing in the NPL, never mind lack of revenue and additional hire costs due to our predicament has put serious strain on the club; we just don’t have the resources required to compete with the other NPL clubs at the top level. Saying that though, the club will continue to do the best it can with the resources available. After a pretty rough start to the season so far, all three teams will be looking to try to get some points on the board and kick start their campaign in 2018. In other news, the club’s annual Family Fun Day took place on Sunday, March 25 at Charonia Park in Mullaloo. It was by far the biggest Family Fun Day that the club has ever hosted and we thank each and every one of you who attended. A massive thank you also goes out to all the volunteers who chipped in over the course of the day. The Amateurs put the Masters to the sword in all three games which were played in great spirits. The Masters teams kick off their season this weekend with the preliminary rounds of the cup scheduled for Easter Monday. The Amateurs and Community Juniors get their campaigns underway the following week on Sunday, March 8. The NPL first team boys will also be in FFA Cup action on Monday, while the 20s and 18s travel to Gosnells City for their State Cup games. To all of our sponsors, members and loyal supporters, thank you. Without your con- tinued support none of this would be possible. It is great to see so many club members making the effort to get down to support the NPL boys. To all our junior mascots, thanks again for your time. We love having you out there. #Oneclub. Best of luck to all JUFC teams this weekend. JUFC Amateur News With preseason done and dusted, our Amateurs are ready to go for the season proper which gets underway next weekend. Division Four First Team Coach Nathan Hobbs has added to his squad since the first ball was kicked in January, and he is pleased with the progress that has been made with each game. “It’s another new look Division Four team this year, with a lot of new faces on board,” he says. “Preseason has been the usual hard work with games against some tough opponents, including Kingsley Premier Reserves and Canning City from Division Three. There were good performances in both games but a lack of fitness at that stage and the heat cost us results.” Chris Beaton, Chris Boyle and Ben Rogers have added both quality and experience to the squad having been with JUFC for a number of seasons. Throw in some promising youngsters like Ben Hornby and Ethan Culff and there is plenty to be hopeful about for the campaign ahead. “A three-all draw with Fremantle City and a loss to Kingsley Division Four have shown the areas we need to improve, but a lot of that we put down to getting new players involved and getting the team to gel,” says Hobbs. “Preseason rounded out with Fami- ly Fun Day and a good performance against the Masters allowed us to work on some tactics.” Meanwhile, Luke Sims will oversee the Reserve side who have also been busy with games over the past few weeks. “The reserves also showing strong performances for their games and getting some good results with hard work they've put in,” says Hobbs. “The team overall is stronger than last year with good depth in many positions and we'll be looking to push on in the lottery that is Division 4. “With many new teams a bit of mystery, it makes the division very challenging but we start the season off with the away trip to Mandurah and hope for a good performance and two lots of three points.” The Division One sides, meanwhile, rounded out their preseason with wins over Carramar Division Two and the top two Masters sides on Family Fun Day. They host Port Kennedy at Beldon Park in their first league games on Sunday, April 8. Joondalup United v Cockburn City - March 31, 2018
Welcome to Today’s Visitors Cockburn City Football Club Cockburn City Soccer Club Ground - Dalmatinac Park, Spearwood Coach - Scott Miller Colours - White and Blue Year Formed - 1929 State League Honours Premier League Winners: 1979, 1982, 1986 Premier League Top Five Winners: 1982 Cup Winners: 1983, 1984, 1985 Night Series Winners: 1979, 1993 First Division Winners: 2012 Second Division Winners: 1964 After a good start to 2017, the Cockerels fell away late, and missed out on the finals. Head Coach Scott Miller has put that behind him, and encouraged by a good Night Series, they go into 2018 eying an improvement. They only scored 38 goals last season, with Gian Albano bagging 12 goals, with Daniel Robinson added five, and Harry O’Brien four. Albano has left the club but Miller has added some firepower up front, by signing Luccas Mello (Balcatta) and Tonci Skorich (Armadale), as they go in search of more goals. Former Perth Glory midfielder Cameron Edwards leads the engine room of the Dalmatinac Park club, along with the experienced Ruben Tristao, while at the back Kieron Stallard and skipper Euen Grant will play huge roles. They have a number of talented youngster in their squad, and if they get the mix right a spot in the top half of the table is on the cards. They arrive here today after a big win against league leaders Bayswater City last week, so it will be a tough challenge, but we are looking to get on board this season so it should be a good game - Enjoy . JUFC Match Report v Floreat Athena Floreat run away late A four-goal haul from Floreat striker Phil Arnold ensured that our blank start to the season continued as Athena ran out 7-2 winners on Saturday night at E&D Litis Stadium. Despite a bright start from United, with Greg Pellow and Alex Wild going close, Athena scored first on 22 minutes when Arnold headed home captain Dean Evans’ corner. But we equalised in the 33rd minute after Pellow was fouled in the box and Johnny Chalmers squeezed the penalty past Floreat keeper Jason Saldaris. But minutes later Floreat regained the lead after a mix-up in the Joondalup defence allowed Andrew Scaldaferro to slip in behind the keeper and slot the ball into an empty net. Another Joondalup penalty in the second half saw Chalmers again convert from the spot to make it 2-2 and it could have been even better for United minutes later. Sam Wynne’s cross picked out Wild, whose header crashed off the crossbar. From that moment, however, it was all downhill as Floreat added five second-half goals. Arnold grabbed his second on 55 minutes with a simple tap-in following good play by Marco Santa Lucia on the right-wing. Then he completed his hat-trick in the 73rd minute when he turned in the box be- fore firing past United goalkeeper James Bosdet. Jonathan Stynes came off the bench to make it five before Ar- nold’s fourth goal on 82 minutes after Floreat had worked the ball well down the wings. Bad became worse for United with substitute Adam Buckley shown a red card for a heavy challenge five minutes from the end, before Floreat midfielder Evans capped an impressive performance with a stoppage-time goal from close range. JUFC Coach Nick Jennings was disappointed with his side’s display. “Same old, same old. Yet again, I thought in the first half we were the better team. We missed opportunities,” he said. “We play good football but only in spells. Individual errors, from everyone, is what’s killing us. But I’ve got to be positive. I’m a glass half-full person. I believe we can get three points next Saturday.” Floreat Athena 7 (Arnold 22’, 55’, 73’, 82’, Scaldaferro 39’, Stynes 76’, Evans 90’) Joondalup United 2 (Chalmers 33’, 50’) Floreat Athena: 1.
