Issue: 19 1st February 2019 Grow Learn Persevere Succeed admin@greatleighs.essex.sch.uk GREAT LEIGHS SCHOOL NEWS Dear Parents/Carers Another busy week in school! The children had a very interesting assembly on Monday presented by Chris McGrath, a historian, who took the children back into the Roman times. The children shared their knowledge about life in Camulodunum (Roman Colchester) and, by using the model of an arch and an aqueduct, the children explored the building processes of these structures. It was a fascinating assembly, full of interesting information. On Tuesday we had a School Review on reading and vocabulary, carried out by other local Headteachers and senior staff from the River Chelmer Primary Cluster. It was a very positive review and your children spoke very confidently to our visitors, giving them a very good insight into their learning of reading and vocabulary both at school and at home. Very positive comments were made about the whole class read- ing sessions at KS2 and the complexity of the texts the children were reading and studying together, and the breadth of vocabulary the KS1 children were using in their creative writing. Treat Day Reminder Just a reminder that ‘Treat Day Friday’ allows children to bring in chocolate bars or crisps, but not sweets. Many thanks Parking Outside the School In order to keep all children safe, please keep the zigzag lines outside school clear at drop off and collec- tion times. Many thanks. Parent/teacher consultations We look forward to seeing parents at our consultation evenings on Tuesday 12 th and Wednesday 13th of February, do book your time via Parent Mail.

Space Day - Mole Class ‘On the 31st January, Georgie Hutchins, our Space Cadet boss came in for our first Space Cadet training session. We identified what a space training room looked like and then made ourselves one of the many pieces of equipment in the room. First of all, we got a NASA training record to keep track of our progress. We looked at pictures of para- chutes and then got into groups of three and drew a diagram of a parachute and made them out of bin liners and newspaper. We then took them outside and checked if the different things we attached changed the speed and if it had an impact on when the astronauts land. Before we took them outside we had to discuss with our team what independent variable we wanted to change and dependent variables we wanted to keep in my group we kept size and weight and changed the height. When we took them out we always took an iPad to time how long it took to come down. Some people put very light things on but they just flew away and stayed on the roof. We were also told to identify things from a rocket blasting off into space. As we came to a finish, Georgie made us draw blueprints of a rocket and write down what our experi- ment was and how long it took for the parachute to land. We had a fun day and wished it would never stop.’ By: Millie and Alessia
