Awareness Days and Months 2019/2020 April 1st – 5th Family Safety Week www.rospa.com Accidents are the biggest killer of children and young people. Family Safety Week focuses on protecting some of the most vulnerable members of our community — babies, toddlers and children under five. 1st – 7th Diabetes Prevention Week www.diabetes.org.uk The NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NHS DPP) is holding the second Diabetes Prevention Week. Diabetes UK has teamed up with them to raise awareness of their Healthier You programme. This is a free service run by the NHS to help reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. 5th National Walk to Work Day Walking can help to clear the mind, burn calories and get your heart pumping. And doing this before work could encourage and influence you to eat healthier throughout the day. 26th On Your Feet Britain www.onyourfeetday.com Take part in our national day when workers across Britain unite together and participate in a variety of fun and simple activities to #SitLess and #MoveMore at work May 1st-31st National Walking Month www.livingstreets.org.uk May is National Walking Month and Living Streets, the national charity that works to create safe, attractive and enjoyable streets, will be encouraging people to walk with their successful annual initiatives - to encourage everyone to get more walking into their day. 6th – 12th Sun Awareness Week www.bad.org.uk/for-the-public/sun-awareness-campagin Sun Awareness is the British Association of Dermatologists' annual campaign to raise awareness of skin cancer. 6th – 12th National Weaning Week www.weaningweek.co.uk The aim of Weaning Week is to bring together experts, brands and real families to offer help, advice, tips, support and recipes to make weaning as easy as possible. 13th May – National Smile Month 13th Jun www.nationalsmilemonth.org/events Encouraging the public to learn a little more about their oral health and find out just why it is so important in their overall well-being. 13th – 19th Mental Health Awareness Week www.mentalhealth.org.uk/campaigns/mental-health-awareness-week The theme for 2019 is Body Image – how we think and feel about our bodies. 20th – 26th Dementia Action Week www.alzheimers.org.uk/DementiaActionWeek Dementia Action Week unites people, workplaces, schools and
communities to take action and improve the lives of people living with dementia. 20th – 24th Walk to School Week www.livingstreets.org.uk/what-we-do/projects/walk-to-school-week Walk to School Week is a celebration where pupils and grown-ups around the UK unite for one week of walking to school. Walking can benefit the whole community as well as improve an individual wellbeing. 31st World No Tobacco Day http://www.euro.who.int/en/media- centre/events/events/2019/05/tobacco-and-lung-health-world-no- tobacco-day-2019 In 2019, World No Tobacco Day will focus on "tobacco and lung health". June 3rd – 9th Child Safety Week www.capt.org.uk Child Safety Week is run by Child Accident Prevention Trust to raise awareness of the risks of child accidents and how they can be prevented. The theme is Family life today: where’s the risk? It highlights the new dangers facing families today from our modern lifestyles and offers simple solutions to keep children safe. 8th – 16th Bike Week www.bikeweek.org.uk Bike Week, delivered by Cycling UK, is an annual celebration to showcase cycling. Riding a bike can easily be a part of everyday life and Bike Week is here to inspire people all over the UK to give cycling a try. 10th -14th BNF Healthy Eating Week www.foodafactoflife.org.uk BNF Healthy Eating Week is a dedicated week in the year to encourage organisations across the UK (including workplaces, universities, and schools) to focus on healthy eating and drinking, and physical activity, and celebrate healthy living. 10th – 16th Mens Health Week www.menshealthforum.org.uk/mhw The focus for Men's Health Week in 2019 is the impact of inequality and deprivation on men's health 10th – 16th Carers Week www.carersweek.org Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. 10th – 16th Cervical Screening Awareness Week www.jostrust.org.uk Raising awareness that cervical screening prevents 75% of cervical cancers from developing. 17th World Blood Donor Day www.who.int/who-campaigns/world-blood-donor-day To raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. 20th Clean Air Day www.cleanairday.org.uk Clean Air Day is a chance to find out more about air pollution
July 12th-21st Love Parks Week www.keepbritaintidy.org Love Parks Week is an annual campaign to celebrate parks and other green space. August 1st – 7th World Breastfeeding Week www.worldbreastfeedingweek.org World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) is a global network of organisations and individuals who believe breastfeeding is the right of all children and mothers and who dedicate themselves to protect, promote and support this right. 7th National Play Day www.playday.org.uk On Playday, thousands of children and their families get out to play at hundreds of community events across the UK. 8th Cycle to Work Day www.cycletoworkday.org Cycle to Work Day is the UK’s biggest cycle commuting event. All you need to take part is a bike – new or old – and the desire to ride. September 1st – 30th World Alzheimer's Month www.alz.co.uk/world-alzheimers-month World Alzheimer's Month is the international campaign every September to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia. 2nd – 8th Organ Donation Week www.organdonation.nhs.uk Raising awareness of the important need for families to talk about organ donation to help save lives. 8th National Dementia Carers Day www.nationaldementiacarersday.co.uk Celebrating & sharing the innovative support of dementia carers across the UK. 9th – 15th Know Your Numbers Week www.bloodpressureuk.org Encourages adults across the UK to know their blood pressure numbers and take the necessary action to reach and maintain a healthy blood pressure. 10th World Suicide Prevention Day www.iasp.info Awareness day observed every year, in order to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides. 16th – 22nd Sexual Health Week www.fpa.org.uk Sexual Health Week offers support to parents on how to educate their children about sexual health, as well as campaigning for better sexual health services and the right for all young people to have access to education regarding appropriate relationships and sex education. 25th National Fitness Day www.nationalfitnessday.com National Fitness Day is a chance to highlight the role physical activity plays across the UK, helping us raise awareness of its importance in helping us lead healthier and active lifestyles.

December 1st Worlds Aid Day www.worldaidsday.org World AIDS Day takes place on the 1st December each year. It’s an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. This means: • Attending cervical screening when invited • Knowing the symptoms of cervical cancer and seeking medical advice if experiencing any • Taking up the HPV vaccination if aged 11-18 • Knowing where to find support and further information February TBC Children's Mental Health Week www.childrensmentalhealthweek.org.uk During Children’s Mental Health Week 2019, children, young people and adults across the country will be taking part in special Show and Tell events, raising vital funds and awareness by bringing something into school or work that makes them feel good. TBC Safer Internet Day www.saferinternetday.org The aim of Safer Internet Day is to get people talking about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively. TBC Time to Talk Day www.time-to-change.org.uk Mental health problems affect one in four of us, yet people are still afraid to talk about it. Time to Talk Day encourages everyone to talk about mental health. March TBC No Smoking Day No Smoking Day is an annual health awareness day in the United Kingdom which is intended to help smokers who want to quit smoking. TBC The Big Pedal www.sustrans.org.uk/bigpedal Big Pedal is the UK’s largest inter-school cycling, walking and scooting challenge. It inspires pupils, staff and parents to choose human power for their journey to school.
