Busy Bee Paper Craft You will need: • Yellow card • Black card • White card or paper • Black felt pen • Red felt pen • Scissors • Glue stick How to make: 1. Draw and cut 2 circles from each of your 3 card pieces - any size you like but, all 6 circles should be the same size. These are for the body and wings. 2. Cut out two stick shapes and a small pointy ‘tail’ from the black card. These are for the antennae and the sting. 3. Cut two tiny circles from the white card ready for the eyes and two little heart shapes (or any shape you wish) ready for the finishing touch on the antennae. 4. Glue the body first by sticking the yellow and black circles together so that they overlap. Start with black so that the last full circle visible is yellow. 5. Cut white circles in half and add two halves stuck to the back of your bee, straight edge up, for wings. 6. Add black stick shapes and tail/sting - again glue these to the back of your bee. 7. Stick your yellow hearts or other shape you have made onto the antennae tips and your small white circles to the top yellow circle. 8. Finish off by adding black circles to eyes, maybe some eyelashes and a big red happy smile! TIP: Why not make a few in different sizes and make a big family of bees, otherwise known as a HIVE of bees! Page 3
Make a Cereal Box Pinata What you need: • Large empty cereal box (any cereal box will work) • Wrapping paper • Sticky tape • String/twine • Screw driver • Crepe paper, stickers for decorating (optional ) Who doesn’t LOVE a pinata??? Shop bought pinatas can be expensive however, you can make your own for pennies using material you most likely already have. Here is how: 1. Fill your cereal box with your pinata goodies (individually wrapped sweet, small toys etc). Close the box using the tabs. You don't want to close the top too securely because up- side will be downside and this will be the bottom of your pinata and you want it to eventual- ly open when it is hit. 2. Wrap your cereal box with wrapping paper. Again, when wrapping over the open end (i.e. now your bottom) secure it with only a few small pieces of tape so it will eventually open. 3. Using a screw driver (make sure a grown up does this part!) poke a hole on 2 sides of the top of the pinata (the closed end). Thread a piece of string in one hole and out the other. This is what you will use to hang your pinata. Make the hole on the side where the string was coming out a bit bigger so it is easy to thread it through. 4. Decorate the pinata as desired. Add crepe paper, stickers etc. onto the top and bottom on the pinata. Create fringes on the crepe paper by folding it and cutting vertically. 5. Hang your piñata outside or inside if space allows, and have fun hitting it open! Page 5
What Day is it Today? July 4th is American Independence Day! Did You Know? This holiday celebrates the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, which declared independence from the Great Britain and its king. Only John Hancock actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th 1776. All the others signed later. Activity Time! In America, to celebrate Independence Day - people love to watch big firework shows all around the country. Using whatever art supplies you can find such as coloured chalk, crayons, pencils, paint, glitter, scrap paper, can you create a firework picture? If you need some inspiration here are some ideas!!! Page 6
Clothes Peg Catapult What you need • Clothes Peg, wooden or plastic • Block of wood • Milk or juice cap • Gorilla Glue or super glue • Markers or Paint How to make 1. Glue your clothes peg onto the centre of a small block of wood with the sides and edges sanded down to avoid splinters when handling. 2. Glue the milk cap to the top of clothespin near the edge of the “closed” side (the end that pinches the clothes!) of the clothes peg. 3. Use markers or paint and decorate your catapults – Can be done before or after adding the clothespin to the block. 4. Once dry, the fun begins! Grab small objects that can be launched without causing harm to people, walls or floors. You could use mini-corks, but mini-marshmallows, pom-poms and rolled tight foil would work too. Page 7
Rainbow 3D Model Craft You will need: • Construction paper/card in colours of the rainbow + a white sheet of card • Cotton balls • Scissors • Glue • Duct tape/strong sticky tape How to make: 1. Cut strips of colourful paper. You will need 7 different colour strips, one of each colour if you want to make a true rainbow. Cut two big cloud shapes out of white construction pa- per/card. 2. Glue the strips in the correct order on one cloud – glue them at the middle of the cloud. (the Colour order is purple, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red or the other way around). Secure with duct tape. Glue on the other cloud on the other end of the rainbow paper strips. Secure with tape. 3. Fold the strips of paper along the edge where it is stuck with the duct tape/strong sticky tape, this will make it way easier to arch the rainbow later on. 4. Apply glue generously on the cloud (glue sticks are easier but white school glue/PVA would work great as well). Add cotton balls. Be sure to add the cotton balls on the part of the cloud that is under the rainbow as this will make it hold it’s arched shape. 5. Do the same on the second cloud. Page 8

What Day is it Today? July 31st - Harry Potters birthday FACTS • Harry Potter shares his birthday with the writer of the books - JK Rowling • The Harry Potter books are set in a school called Hogwarts and there are four houses - Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin • J K Rowling wrote a lot of the books from a little café in Edinburgh, in fact a lot of inspiration is taken from places in Edinburgh in- cluding a street in which Diagon Alley is based on. • Ever want to take a visit to see the real Hogwarts Castle, well rumour is that is in remote Scotland, however it may be impossible to see as it is invisible to muggles (non magic people), though you may be a wizard or a witch so it may not be a problem for you. • Despite the children at Hogwarts living away from their parents, they can still get into trouble if they have done something wrong, their parent can send them a letter called a howler. • Each of the houses in Hogwarts is represented by a different emblem. For Gryffindor it is a Lion, for Hufflepuff it is a Badger, for Ravenclaw it is an Eagle and for Slytherin it is a snake.
