Issue no. 7 18 May 2021 General News JUNIOR RCL Congratulations to our new Grade 8 RCL reps: Mamphiswana Mushishikwe (8A), Maryam Khan (8B), Abenathi Ndlovu (8C), Kate Meng (8D), Noorah Mayet (8E), Asmaa Badat (8F), Namusi Mamanyuha (8G), Nabeeha Cassim (8H) and Kelebohile Sithole (8J). Well done girls! Grade 8 RCL BLOOD DRIVE HAVE GIRLS BLOOD PUMPING! Report by Christine Kunda and Phillisa Mwila in Grade 12 Parktown High School for Girls was proud to yet again host a blood drive together with the South African National Blood Service (SANBS). Awareness of the blood drive was spread through word of mouth, as well as with the aid of technology. A large crowd of bubbly young ladies queued ready to donate their blood and this helped to create a lively hub that chased away any fear of sharp needles. Upon interviewing many of the donors+ the general feeling was that of excitement. Ashleigh, a grade eleven learner, shared with us that her father is a pharmacist who always encourages his family and friends to donate blood. Thenjiwe, a matriculant, informed us that she wanted to know what her blood looked like in a bag. Through the selflessness of the ladies who donated their blood, SANBS was able to reach their collection goal. The kindness demonstrated by our Parktonians has saved many lives and we are excited for the next blood drive in Term 3.
PAD DRIVE FEEDBACK For the duration of the first term, the ‘service portfolio’ on the RCL, ran a pad drive. This drive required learners to bring in sanitary products that would be donated to women and girls in need. It gives me great joy to say that overall, we managed to collect 337 sanitary products. All the proceeds were donated to the charity organisation, 1000 Girls. This organisation aims to assist refugee girls in Johannesburg with providing them with basic necessities, such as sanitary products. A big thank you must go out to everyone who showed their support towards this drive. Thank you for dropping off pads and sharing posters. Your contributions to the cause are dearly appreciated. We hope that our future drives are met with just as much enthusiasm and involvement. PUNCTUALITY AND LATE ARRIVAL AT SCHOOL Screening starts at 07:00 in the mornings at the respective grade gates (grade 8s and 9s: Kildare gate and 10s – 12s: Main gate). The teachers are having to do the screening and if the girls are late, the teachers are late for class. We are pleading with parents to please ensure the girls are on time for school. The school gates will be closed at 07:40 sharp. Please ensure that your daughter/ward arrives at school in time to be screened by 07:40 as she is required to be in registration by 07:45. There will be consequences for girls who are late as attendance at registration is a non-negotiable. If a learner arrives late i.e. misses registration, she needs to see Mrs Forrester in the Finance Office. This is essential as no learner may go to class before being screened and she will be marked absent for the day. Lateness will be excused only in exceptional circumstances. We regret we cannot excuse learners because of transport problems, other than in exceptional circumstances. It is a pre-condition of enrolment at the school that parents/guardians will enable and ensure their daughter/ward's punctual arrival at school. When we are aware of strikes, accidents or bad weather, we do make exceptions. Learners who are late for school and miss a part of their lessons are hindering their own and their classmates' progress. Teachers are not obliged to teach the missed work to learners who arrive late. Please assist us in teaching the girls that being punctual in an important life-skill. PA BLANKETS FOR SALE The PA is selling school blankets for R120 each. If you would like it personalized with your daughter/ward's name, that will be an additional R30. The blankets are a soft luxury Mongolian fleece and are 1m x 1.5m. It has the school name and star embroidered on one corner. Blankets are available at the Finance office. Looking forward to your support ⭐

CANSA HAIR DONATION FOR WIGS Matric learners, Isabella Sparrow, Erin Helling and Calise Tierney, recently donated their beautiful ponytails to CANSA. CANSA receives human hair donations (ponytails) in order to make sufficient wigs for cancer Survivors requesting them. These wigs are distributed, as requested, to CANSA Care Centres all over the country, and given to cancer Survivors who need it most. CANSA welcomes all types of hair for donation. Although it is preferred that the ponytail be 25 cm or longer, shorter hair is also acceptable as it can be used as filler-hair. This earned her an entry into the qualifying round for a place in the South African Physics Olympiad team. Earlier this year she wrote a challenging Physics qualifying paper and scored within the top five marks in the country. She will be representing our country in July in the International Physics Olympiad. This olympiad is being held in Lithuania but due to Covid restrictions she will be participating virtually from a venue in Cape town. We congratulate Nikisha on her impressive achievement and wish her all the best for the international olympiad. Cultural News THE MUSIC PROGRAMME The Music Programme consists of 5 students (Yolisa Sphambo, Sibahle Zwane, Simnikiwe Hobe, Lindelwa Makhunga and Paris Rees) ranging from Grade 10-12 who play songs requested by students, both juniors and seniors, every Friday morning. These Friday mornings are referred to as “Feel Good Fridays” and students participate and dance enthusiastically and vibrantly which end up making them have a great start to their day at school and weekend. The last day of Term 1 was on a Thursday therefore instead of the morning being called “Feel Good Friday”, it was called “Grand Feel Good Thursday”.
On that morning, students were highly enthusiastic and excited as The Parktown Girls’ Marimba Band and The Parktown Boys’ Band graced us with energetic and incredible performances that definitely set the mood for the rest of the day, as songs that were requested were performed. The Instagram page has been up and running where more can be found about The Music Programme and “Feel Good Fridays” @music_programme2021. The Parktown Boys’ Band and The Music Programme HIP HOP The Hip Hop team which had started going through the rounds last year for the NEA Eisteddfod Young Performers Awards 2019, had reached the semi- finals when lockdown occurred. They have now been invited to compete in the 2020 Young Performers Awards and were pushed straight through to the semi-finals. The team competed in the Final Round of the 18th Young Performer Awards competition on Saturday, 8 May, at the Roodepoort Theatre stage. The adjudicators' panel comprising of Heidi Edeling, Harold van Buuren, Izak Davel, Desiree Markgraaf and Peta-Ann Holdcroft had a most difficult task in selecting the winners. The adjudicators' panel decided to make special mention of our team and considered them as the Most Inspiring Performance. Congratulations girls on your outstanding performances! Mr Ethan Molefe, who has been a part of our Soccer Staff for the past 6 years, prepared a fantastic course for our players to learn the latest rules, learn how to use the rules to your advantage in a match, analyse video footage and included a practical session to put it all into action. This course has given the soccer girls a great start to their pre- season. The players wrote a test at the end to test their knowledge. Well done to Tashriq Elmedany who achieved the highest result with 85%. Please note that Soccer trials will take place on 2 and 3 June, from 15:00 – 17:30. Pre-season practice will take place until then as stated on the extra-mural timetable.

We will be hiring more courts so that we can limit 2 players to a court. Unfortunately, this does mean that the number of players per day is limited to 10. If you would like to play squash, please speak to Mrs F Patel to sign up. Our canoeists are still at it with their hard work and dedication and are looking forward to what this term brings for them. Sherona Gower, the captain, gave us this report: "We started the second term strong and were excited to get back on the water. The cold weather means we will be doing a lot more distance work. We also have a bus taking paddlers to the dam which we are incredibly grateful for. I am hoping for a fun season with steady progression in paddling overall." We can’t wait for you to become part of our big softball family!"
Our cross country girls are proving that hard work does indeed pay off. "The cross country girls ran their first race on Monday afternoon at Delta Park. Five girls placed in the top 20 in their respective categories. It was an exceptional run from all our girls and loads of fun too." - said the captain, Jenna Freeman. A Spin on Sport *A to Z on tennis* Tennis is an exciting sport which uses a tennis racket, a small green ball and a tennis court to play. Tennis courts have many lines drawn onto them including the baseline, service line, tram lines and centre mark. The game is simple and super fun to play. To play, the first player serves the tennis ball from the baseline into the opposite court over the net. The other player returns the ball over the net into the court. For singles the players cannot hit into the tram lines on the sides of the court. This is deemed out. The players must return the ball anywhere on the court binside the baseline. This carries on until either player hits out. Through tennis you will learn to concentrate, think fast and reveal your inner strength. So, take this opportunity to sharpen your mind and stay fit. Bring your friends for a round of doubles and come hit a few balls with us!! Service News COMMUNITY SERVICE Although Covid restrictions have halted many of our calendar events and interactions with the community, our Community Service learners were still able to show their love and appreciation for the residents of the Salvation Army Eventide Old Age Home in Emmarentia on Mother's Day. Sadly, we were not able to spend quality time with the residents. However, when delicious cupcakes and beautiful cards made by our learners were delivered to the Home, the residents were deeply touched by this kind gesture, and felt how much they are cared about.
