THANK YOU Thank you to the many people who have made the 2020-2021 debate season a success so far: volunteer judges, dedicated coaches, devoted parents, and energetic students! A special thanks to our Debate Academy instructors, guest lecturers, and tournament staff who met the challenge of providing quality online programming. With the many changes to this season, we are providing this update package to let you know of upcoming tournaments and programming, national events, and the current season standings of our debaters. As we take time to pause, reflect, physically distance and wear our masks; we wish you rest filled holiday season. Our offices will be closed December 21st, 2020 to January 4th, 2021. SEDA PROGRAMMING UPCOMING SEDA TOURNAMENTS All our remaining tournaments, including the Provincial Championships will be held online. Please see the links below for more information. TOURNAMENT 6: ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT January 16th, 2021 - All Divisions - All impromptu Registration open January 4th, 2021 TOURNAMENT 7: PHILOSOPY January 30th, 2021 - All Divisions - All impromptu Registration open January 15th , 2021 TOURNAMENT 8: LAW February 13th, 2021 - All divisions - Prepared & impromptu Registration open January 29th, 2021 E.C. LESLIE PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS March 13th & 14th 2021 - All divisions - Prepared & impromptu Invitations will be sent mid to late February. MID-SEASON UPDATE PAGE 2
SEDA PROGRAMMING TOURNAMENT PREP WORKSHOPS Tournament workshops will be offered the week preceding each of our January tournaments. It will be an opportunity for students to prepare for the upcoming tournament, ask questions, practice strategies, and improve skills. Registration will open the first week of January. DEBATE ACADEMY A third term of Debate Academy will be offered this season! Like the previous terms, there will be debate classes for students of all ages and experiences. Debate Academy Term 3 will begin in February with registration opening mid-January. E.C. LESLIE PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS The E.C. Leslie Provincial Championships will be held Saturday March 13th and Sunday March 14th 2021 on Zoom. To be eligible to attend the Provincial Championships, debaters must meet the following eligibility criteria: Paid all outstanding SEDA fees Participated in at least two tournaments in the current season, both in the same division Using the best two tournament scores: Eligible individual students are ranked by their best speaker points Eligible teams are ranked based on the team's combined speaker points The final number of teams invited to the Championships is determined by the host's capacity. Invitations for provincials will be sent out by mid to late February 2021. SASKDEBATE.COM PAGE 3
NATIONAL EVENTS NATIONAL DEBATING CHAMPIONSHIPS The Senior High Canadian National Debating Championships (Grades 10-12) will be hosted virtually by Quebec Student Debating Association April 15th to 18th, 2021. The Junior High Canadian National Debating Championships (Grades 7 - 9) will be hosted by the Manitoba Debate Association. Date and location to be determined. To be considered eligible for these tournaments: Debaters must have attended two tournaments in the current season. Teams must have a combined team average of at least 75% Combined team scores will be calculated as follows: 40% of the best scores from two regular tournaments and 60% of the Provincial Championships score. Complete interprovincial qualification criteria can be found in our Board Policy document here. HIGH SCHOOL NATIONAL PUBLIC SPEAKING CHAMPIONSHIPS The high school National Public Speaking Championships will be hosted virtually by the Manitoba Speech and Debate Association February 5th to 7th, 2021. Each participant will have to take part in four events: impromptu speaking, persuasive speaking, interpretive reading, and parliamentary debating. There is no registration fee, but each competitor MUST provide a judge available for the tournament SEDA will provide preparation workshops in January for interested participants. MID-SEASON STANDINGS The following pages show the mid season debate standings. Individual average is based on the two best speaker scores from the current season. Team average is a combination of the teams individual speaker score average. Students that competed with multiple partners are colour coded. UPDATED DOCUMENTS We periodically review and update our policies and documentation. Our Code of Conduct, Equity and Complaints procedures have been updated. If you believe that SEDA's Code of Conduct has been violated at any SEDA events, please fill out this form within one week of the incident. We will do our best to respond promptly.
