SCIENCE EDUCATION HORIZON-WIDERA-2021-ERA-01-70 Developing a STE(A)M roadmap for Science Education in Horizon Europe
Scope (1/2) Rationale and objectives • COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated importance of Europe’s scientists to keep society safe and healthy • Europe needs more scientists and Europe needs a science literate society • To increase uptake in science careers and feed talent pipeline, a plan of action is needed to encourage more interest in STE(A)M for young and old alike, plus focus to increase female participation • Artistic approaches to STEM involving creative thinking and applied arts (the “A” in STEAM) could prove useful HORIZON-WIDERA-2021-ERA-01-70

Scope (1/2) Rationale and objectives • Open Schooling for Science Education and a learning continuum for all • Proposed action targets creation of new partnerships in local communities to foster improved science education for citizens and to contribute to a learning continuum for all • Policies should support students, teachers, parents and the wider community to improve access to and provide everyone with the opportunities to pursue excellence in learning • Students and citizens fully equipped to engage in scientific discourse and facilitate further study in science education • Action aims to support range of activities based on collaboration at local level between formal, non-formal and informal science education providers, enterprises and civil society to integrate the concept of open schooling, at all educational levels, in science education HORIZON-WIDERA-2022-ERA-01-70
Scope (2/2) Potential Foster improved science education for all citizens and contribute to a learning continuum for all activities Work together on real-life challenges and innovations within local communities to engage them in teaching and learning and to promote science education as part of local community development. Collaboration at local level between formal, non-formal and informal science education providers, enterprises and civil society Possible strategies for increased female participation HORIZON-WIDERA-2022-ERA-01-70
Expected outcome Projects are expected to contribute to: ● New partnerships to foster networking, sharing and applying STEM research findings amongst teachers, researchers and professionals across different enterprises eg Startups, SMEs, entrepreneurs; Indicative budget: EUR ● Engage learners in meaningful real-life problem-solving situations, within 5.50 million education, the workplace and other learning environments; ● Support cross-community networks of stakeholders to address issues Expected EU contribution such as the Green Deal, Health and Digitalisation; per project: between EUR 1.50 and 2.00 million ● Encourage mentoring across the different groups involved in the partnerships in order to take full advantage of science, technology, research and innovation; ● Encourage industry-funded innovation to become part of lifelong learning programmes.
