MAMMALNET Citizens and scientists working together to improve knowledge of the distribution of European mammals Joaquin Vicente joaquin.vicente@uclm.es Instituto de Investigación en Recursos Cinegéticos IREC
enetwild.com A European network of wildlife professionals able to provide data on the distribution and abundance of host species and their pathogens.
• On several occasions EFSA has been requested to assess risks related to animal diseases for which wildlife are hosts • Repeatedly, a lack of data on the geographical distribution and abundance of the wildlife hosts has hampered the assessments • Compiling valid information on abundance and distribution of wildlife species is needed, following harmonised methods and filtered by standards of quality
1. To collect existing published or unpublished data on the geographical distribution and abundance of selected wildlife hosts, to validate and to aggregate them in a harmonized way in a common database 2. To promote and coordinate the generation of new data 3. Spatial Modelling 4. To further enhance the network of wildlife professionals to support data collection activities 2017 2023
OBJECTIVES • Assess the feasibility of the application of Citizen Science in wildlife monitoring at European level • Provide information on possible limitations, benefits and added value • as well as on best practices promoting data quality and participation. • Propose and implement a method to assess the quality of data collected by citizen scientists on the geographical distribution and abundance of wild populations and compare it with professionally collected data

Premisas: 1) Adapt/improve existing applications 2) Promote applications focused on mammal data collection 3) Data to be submitted openly to GBIF 1. Researchers and WilLife managers 2. Citizens in contact with nature 3. MOOC for managers, educators, students 3 specific projects to promote open science and citizen participation
Free mobile app (different languages) • For citizens • Record and share mammal sightings or clues • With guides for easy identification • Access to maps, own and other users' records • Data is shared on GBIF
iMammalia
ROL: Trapper &/or Spotter MammalWeb A web platform aimed at citizens (e.g. naturalists, hunters) where they can; • Share your own photo-trapping images • Help identify the images of other users. • Information is verified by experts, citizens and shared on GBIF
AGOUTI Web application Useful for estimating distribution and number of species • Aimed at researchers and wildlife managers with: Surveys with photo-trapping cameras Facilitates the identification of images and sequences Management of the information obtained by the cameras • It allows the creation of individual projects with : - Possibility of collaborative participation - Different roles according to the type of user (from Principal Investigator to Volunteer) The information is collected in a standardized way and can be made available to the scientific community through GBIF Different roles
