THOSE WHOO WATCH WILL BECOME THOSE WHO POSE BECOME THE NEXT MODEL OF THE "TRAVELLER" SCULPTURE. BY BRUNO CATALANO Since February 22nd, an unprecedented Instragram contest in Art world has been launched by the sculptor Bruno Catalano through the #brunocatalanoexperience. Whishing to meet his community, the artist offers the possibility to everybody, to become his next sculpture model. Through this international contest, the artist invites internauts of all morphologies and styles to take photographs of themselves imitating the look of a "Traveller" (the artist's emblematic sculpture). With creativity, the participants strike a pose and then publish their photo on their Instagram profile. On Sunday 4th April, Bruno Catalano will choose a winner and will invite them to his studio in the south of France and will create a sculpture in their effigies. Due to the current context and the decreasing physical relationships, artists are looking for new inspirations while internauts, deprived of museums, are becoming aware of the Art need in their lives. Social networks are the best media to democratize the Art world and involving collectors and novices in the creative process of artists. EXHIBITION 2021 « HUBERT », COURCHEVEL 1850

BIOGRAPHY AN INVITATION TO TRAVEL Of Sicilian origin, born in 1960 in Morocco, Catalano moved to Marseille in 1970. Bruno Catalano's sculptures are in bronze, more rarely in clay. Their mark: a break in the middle of the body, with an asymmetry created by the invisibility of one of the two arms as a result of the tear. Literally and plastically, the bodies are traversed by emptiness. They are torn by space. The alternation is played out between mass and absence of mass, between full and empty, an endless theme in 20th century sculpture, from Henri Moore to Jean Arp. In Bruno Catalano's work, void defines the limits of space and defies the weight of the bronze masses. The effect is striking. It is all the more so as the silhouettes gain in imposing dimensions. Literally, the landscape passes through the bodies, it inscribes itself into them, melts into them. In his figurative approach as in the choice of his material, the sculptor, it is true, plays on classicism. Yet he dares to make a new gesture in the effect created by the gap that tears the bodies apart. The contrast between the placid faces and the tear that runs through them says the cry that runs through these travellers, a silent cry in the Munch’s manner. The voids are poignant in the measure of the density sense they induce. A metaphorical benediction of the flaws of interiority? Disarray of these travellers struggling with the dramas of their life's journey? Perseverance on an itinerary without regard for its uprooting? The power of emptiness unmasked the banality of social appearances. The invisible is more suggestive than what can be seen. Always on the move, always in transit, always on the move, Bruno Catalano's sculptures do not let themselves be stopped by the trials of life, exile, uprooting, detachment. Always, the horizon calls them. It constitutes them. Hence these men-scapes. Desires in movement. Torchmen in search of scars. Since 2004, the artist's work has never stopped working on BRUNO CATALANO, ARTIST SCULPTOR the faults, digging the bodies, modelling the hollows.
HIS VALUES THE VOID AS A SIGNATURE Is it a voluntary departure towards a radiant horizon or a forced journey by exile and suffering? Is it a quest for freedom, a flight to a better world? Bruno Catalano's Men in pieces raises many questions SCULPTURE, A THERAPY From exile in Morocco to working as a labourer, Bruno Catalano discovered sculpture at the age of thirty, almost by chance: "It came more as a therapy, I wanted to do sculpture or modelling to occupy my time after my work as an electrician", confides the artist. An "occupation" that has established itself as a real talent recognised throughout the world. Noticed for the first time in 2005 in a contemporary art salon by a Parisian gallery owner, he moved from clay to bronze, and sculpts ever larger figures, achieving real technical prowess. THE SUITCASE CARRYING HISTORY An allegory of uprooting and pain, Bruno Catalano's sculptures also read like an autobiographical work. "It is my life that I show, when we live this immigrant experience we know that we have a part of ourselves that remains behind that we will have to forget but that is always deep inside us". A man in fragments, alone in front of his destiny, Catalano's walker seems to be linked to the world by a single object that allows him to escape. "As soon as the symbolism of the suitcase is introduced, it is humanity that is put in place, people's imaginations rest on a suitcase, you don't travel with your hands in your pockets"...
