P.O. BOX 98 • 3027 PEARL ST. • OLDENBURG, IN 47036 Fr. Carl’s Thoughts and Reflections Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, January 30, 2022 I’m happy to report that the Cincinnati Bengals won the playoff game against the Ten- nessee Titans last Saturday afternoon in the last second of the game. The Bengals kicker MacPherson kicked a field goal to break the 16-16 tie, so the Bengals won 19 to 16. Now the Bengals face the Kansas City Chiefs at Kansas City on Sunday, Jan 30 at 3 PM for the AFC championship and the opportunity to go the the Superbowl on February 13. This week the Prophet Jeremiah tells us about his call from God to be a prophet. God promises to be with him and strengthen him against his foes, especially the unfaithful kings and princes and even the people of Israel. God promises that Jeremiah will prevail because God is with him. St. Paul continues with his First Letter to the Corinthians. The first part of this reading is a favorite for wedding celebrations because it highlights the importance of love over all other virtues. St. Paul tells us that love is bet- ter than prophecy or wisdom or knowledge, even better than faith or generosity. Love is patient and kind, trusting and hopeful, not jealous or rude or selfish or brooding. He says that everything else will fail or be unclear, but love will remain the greatest. St. Luke’s Gospel picks up where we left off last Sunday. Jesus is still speaking in the synagogue in Nazareth. At first the people were amazed, but very quickly began to question His background & competency. Jesus defended Himself by reminding them of past prophets and their treatment, saying that no prophet is accepted in his own native place. Then the people rose up in fury and drove Him out of town to kill Him, but He escaped. Please arrange to have your favorite recent family photo and your family’s names, address, phone number and other information sent to the website the Webbers established: https:// canvaprint.formstack.com/forms/hfc or scan the QR code to access the form . A photographic backdrop is available in the Reconciliation Room for your use. You can also arrange with Cheryl Webber to have her take your family portrait at 812-569-6342. We would like to have all this completed soon, certainly by June. More information is available in this bulletin and in the back of church. I’m sorry to announce that Fr. Bob Weakley, a former resident of Holy Family Friary and Sisters’ Chaplain, died early in the morning on Sunday, January 23, and was buried from Holy Family Church on Friday, January 28, at 11 AM. He was almost 81 years old and had suffered from pneumonia, dementia, congestive heart failure and Covid-19. Please keep him and his family and friends in your prayers. May he rest in peace. Have a Blessed and Safe Fourth Week in Ordinary Time! - Fr. Carl
