19 February 2021 | #06 COLLEGE ST ANDREW’S NEWSLETTER A hundred up! As the sun dawned over College this morning we had opportunity to enjoy a ceremony the likes of which does not come around often. As the sounds In this Edition of the pipes drifted across the campus, we gathered at Mullins House to raise the flag commemorating its Centenary, kicking off a year-long Mullins House Centenary - Flag celebration. In 1921 Mullins was considered absolutely state-of-the-art in Raising Ceremony that it boasted running water and electricity. Flushing toilets would only Visual Arts in Focus come later, though. And for that process to be considered complete, that which was received has to be passed forward, better for having had us. And that is our challenge. We do not just celebrate the vision of our predecessors and inherit their‘stuff’. To each generation of Andreans is handed the responsibility of stewardship, that we may in our time create something magnificent. And as tempting it is to imagine big buildings and dramatic projects, the reality is that we can’t all contribute in that way. But the physical is but one dimension of a school, and through the accumulated small deeds of countless Andreans over time, brotherhood connections, kindness, and a multitude of small deeds done well, we create that ephemeral whole that is College. We become a living monument to those that have stood before us, who would, if they could see and know what we have done with their legacy, stand proud of what the future has made of its past. Community Engagement Every year when boys leave College they donate some of their clothes to Community Engagement office. The first week of this term Grade 8 and 9s have been busy sorting out these clothes for donations. This week the CE officer was received with warm hearts at Vukusebenze in Cradock where these clothes are donated each year. The John Jones Fish River Journey groups usually spend time at Vukusebenze for their community service day where they help serve the vulnerable members of the Cradock community and handout the school clothes. In 2020 we couldn’t send groups to Vukusebenze. They were delighted to receive the clothes this week and mentioned how they miss the College boy’s visits. However we are happy that we can still support the three farm schools in Cradock where Vukusebenze distributes these school clothes. Debating Internal Debating League was created to give our students more opportunities to actively debate. The pupils were put into groups and had to choose a name for their team. The current team logs are as follows: Position Team No. of debates Points 1 Posadists 1 3 2 Team Two 1 0 3 The Colonel's 1 3 4 Reds 1 0 5 69 'ers 1 0 6 Intellectuals 1 3 Past Motions Motion 1: This house would privatise the setting and distribution of the Grade 12 national examinations. Intellectuals (Prop) vs Reds (Opp) Intellectuals won. Daniel Bradfield Best speaker The question here was around quality assurance and ability to access international standards throughout the country. The clash was that the instruction would be the same but the assessment different. The house found that this would certainly disadvantage many South Africans and the house decided that it would rather have a fair chance given to all than a Daniel Bradfield disadvantage to the majority. Motion 2: This house would privatise the manufacturing and distribution of electricity. Posadists (Opp) vs Team Two (Prop) Posadists won. Best speaker- James Stadler Close debate. The teams clashed on three major issues: the obligation to provide electricity, what is the constitutional obligation of the government and does the financial incentive have a relationship with ethical behavior. It was a close debate and the Posadist’s won. Motion 3: This house would incentivise companies to build head offices in rural areas and townships. The Colonels (Prop) vs 69’ers (Opp) Best speaker- Elijah Sejjaaka James Stadler The motion was geared around what the incentive would be and why that would be encouraging for the companies. The debate had two clashes: one was how would this benefit the community and how would it benefit the companies, and the other was the loss of cultural heritage with the urbanization of rural areas. Positive matter: We gathered the debating team to generate the next motions. The coaches wanted them to see how the process goes so they know what we expect. M1: This house regrets the TRC. M2: This house supports restrictions on free speech to combat the rise of right-wing popularism. M3: This house would require all front-line workers to take the COVID vaccine.
