A S PECIAL W ELCOME TO OUR G UESTS We are glad you have joined us for worship this morning. We are a caring community of friends who come from a variety of backgrounds to seek God in this place. Our history is connected to the care and nurture of children and to our supporting each other as we seek God. We encourage you to explore our bulletin and website, to include your email on the fellowship pads and to take home a welcome folder found just outside the Sanctuary. Adult Education: How the Flood at Scotland AME Zion Church is Bringing Us Together | Covenant Hall & on Zoom - All are invited to attend a special presentation about the Second Century Project, the community organization supporting the reconstruction of the historic Scotland AME Zion Church and strengthening our community. The speakers bring passion and expertise to the project: LaTisha Gasaway-Paul is a fifth-generation resident of Scotland AME Zion Church and Rabbi Evan Krame of The Jewish Studio is bringing new energy to the commandment, “love thy neighbor.” Scotland AME Zion Church, founded over a century ago on Seven Locks Road, was devastated by a massive flood in July 2019, leaving the building unusable. Three years later, the congregation is raising money to start the Second Century Project that will restore the historic African-American church and build a new worship facility on site that will serve the wider community as well. If you were unable to attend, please stay tuned for a link to the recording in the Tuesday email. No Smart Sacks Today - There will not be Smart Sacks on February 5. This year group sessions will be held in-person and on Zoom. If you are interested in leading or co-leading one of the small groups of 8-10 people, please contact Denise. 2023 LENTEN SMALL GROUPS | PRAYER: “IN GOD’S PRESENCE” Do you ever wonder about the act of praying? Do you wonder if your prayers make a difference? Do you wonder about what happens when you pray for other people (even without their knowing)? Do you question whether you are really connecting with God, or simply having a conversation with yourself? If you said, “yes” to any of these questions, you’re not alone. We hope that you will join a Lenten Small Group to explore and reflect on the practice of prayer with others at Bradley Hills. Please contact Denise and fill out this form if you are interested in being a part of a Lenten Small Group. Forms are also provided in the Narthex. 2023 FLOWER SIGN-UPS The Flower Guild invites all to sign up for dedications for Sunday flowers. FLOWER DELIVERIES The Deacons & Flower Guild are asking for volunteers to drive and deliver floral arrangements to congregational members who are homebound, need TLC, or simply in celebration of life’s joys. A MESSAGE FROM BHPC STEWARDSHIP Last Sunday we installed a new class of elders and deacons. We celebrate and thank these members who have volunteered their time and talents to make our church’s mission pos- sible, along with those who continue to serve as elders and deacons and those who have served in the past. Without the countless hours contributed by lay ministry members, Sunday School teachers, ushers, choir members, and many other members and friends in one or more roles, Bradley Hills simply could not exist. Thank you for all you do to sup- port Bradley Hills and its programs! M USIC N OTES Though Olivier Messiaen was one of the 20th century’s most important composers of organ music for the Catholic service--63 pieces, more than seven hours of music-- O Sacrum Convivium (“O Sacred Feast”) is his only vocal work specifically for the church. It was composed early in 1937 and when the score was published later that year by Durand, the title page indicated that the work had been commissioned by Abbe F. Brun, a noted authority on Gregorian chant. Messiaen was organist at the Trinite at that time, and the church’s choir almost certainly sang this motet soon after it was written, but the first documented performance was in Messiaen’s arrangement for solo voice an Dorgan at a concert of Les Amis d l’Orgue at the Trinite on Febru- ary 17, 1938. It is an antiphon associated with the season of Easter, and the text is attributed to St. Thomas Aquinas. It is especially applicable to the lessons of the Road to Emmaus. Messiaen’s setting of this text is hushed and reverent, rising to an expressive peak only when the text refers to ‘future glory.’ OUR STAFF & BHPC PARTNERS IN MINISTRY DIRECTORY Senior Pastor David Gray david@bradleyhillschurch.org Associate Pastor Denise Diaab denise@bradleyhillschurch.org Director of Music Matthew Robertson matthew@bradleyhillschurch.org Director of Matt Nabinger matt@bradleyhillschurch.org Christian Education Financial Manager Amy de Court amy@bradleyhillschurch.org Manager of Facilities Farid Beltran farid@bradleyhillschurch.org Director of Communications & Elizabeth Bullock elizabeth@bradleyhillschurch.org Administrative Ministries Coordinator for Spiritual Life Gail Brown polserbrown@hotmail.com Nursery School Director Liz Sorbino lsorbino@bhpcns.org Friends Club Director Ken Silverstein ken@friendsclubbethesda.org Continued Thanks to: Our Sextons - Juan Mendez Sr., Leonel Bruno, Juan Mendez Jr., & Jorge Miranda Our Child Caregivers - Nora Mendez, DelCarla Shorter, & Liz Allen Our Parish Associates - Marty Albershardt, Wally Harman, & Jong Mi Lee Director of Music Emeritus - Donald S.
