May 28, 2021 Following Memorial Day Holiday, All Offices Return to Regular Hours All County offices and courts are closed Monday, May 31, in honor of Memorial Day. The County’s Memorial Day ceremony is scheduled for noon at York Hall (301 Main Street) and includes a keynote speaker, wreath laying, the playing of “Taps,” and more. Please click for the press release about the ceremony. On Tuesday, June 1, all offices will be open with no appointments required. Check our website for hours of operation. Home-Based Business Lunch & Learn Series Continues; Show Your Love for York County Businesses “Identifying Opportunities to Diversify Your Revenue” is the topic of next month’s Lunch & Learn Series for home-based business owners and those interested in starting one. This virtual presentation is held Wednesday, June 9, from 12 to 1 p.m. and features Dr. Rachel Frazier from the William & Mary School of Business. Lunch & Learns are held the second Wednesday of each month. Series sponsor T-Mobile is offering a sweepstakes for participants. Each time you attend a Lunch & Learn, you will be given a link to enter into a drawing for a chance to win a $1,500 Best Buy gift card. Registration is free and available online. York County Economic Development and the York County Chamber of Commerce are holding a Love York Biz contest! Submit a short video describing what makes a business special – it can be a store, restaurant, company, even a home-based business. Videos will be posted to Facebook. The best part is…both you AND the business may win a prize. Full contest rules are available online. Yorktown Library Closes Saturday for Expansion Project At 5 p.m., the doors at the Yorktown branch will close for an upgrade and expansion of this facility. Not only will the building be renovated, but 10,000 square feet will be added. Upon completion, the library will include new space for events and programs, an updated Children’s Wing and new story time room, new space for teens, and more. Patrons needing to return materials will be able to do so via the Yorktown Library’s book drop, which remains open through Friday, June 18. Beginning Tuesday, July 6, citizens may visit the Grafton Annex (5751 George Washington Memorial Highway) for curbside pickup service and book drop. In August, this temporary location will be open for browsing popular items including new titles. Details are available on the Library’s website. York County’s Public Library and Parks & Recreation are hosting “The
Marvelous Land of Oz” puppet show, based on the second book in the series by L. Frank Baum, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 5, at the Boys & Girls Club, 11201 George Washington Memorial Highway. This performance is free, but registration is required through the Library’s events calendar. While we’re on the Subject of Libraries… The Little Free Libraries located adjacent to the Public Safety Building (301 Goodwin Neck Road) continue to provide free books and resources to adults and children. With swimming season upon us, the children’s little library contains coloring sheets on water safety and mini-colored pencil packs to help children and their caregivers understand the dangers of unsupervised swimming and also the need to wear a life jacket. Other coloring sheets are on rip currents, pool and deck safety, appropriate flotation devices, and wearing sunscreen. These free items will be available throughout the summer. County Voted “Best of” by Magazine’s Readers The results are in with York County bringing in multiple top honors in Coastal Virginia Magazine’s Readers’ Choice awards. Votes were cast in categories including Restaurants, Local Attractions, Travel & Leisure, and Shopping. Readers agree Historic Yorktown and Riverwalk Landing have some of the best places to eat, stay, and play on the Peninsula. Thanks to the voters for choosing York County! Read more about it in this week’s press release. Register for Volleyball Camp and Tennis Camps Kids ages 7 to 16 may sign up for Volleyball camp held August 2-6 at Seaford Elementary School. Ages 7-11 will attend from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. while ages 12-16 attend from 1 to 4 p.m. This all-skills volleyball camp will ignite and excite kids about the fun competition of volleyball. Serving, passing, setting, and hitting skills are developed and players have the opportunity to use them during tournament-style competition each day of camp. Tennis camps are open to players of all abilities. Weekly camps from June 28 to August 6 at either Back Creek Park or Kiln Creek Park are available. A Few More Notes for the Week…..Movies in the Parks continues June 5 with a showing of the 2004 movie “Miracle” at New Quarter Park. The movie begins shortly after sunset. This event is free. The plastic bag recycling containers at the Yorktown Library are being moved to the main office at the McReynolds Athletic Complex (412 Sports Way off Rt. 17) during library renovation. Recyclers may bring their plastic bags, wraps and film to the MAC, the Tabb Library, and the Waste Management Center. For more info on plastic recycling, visit the Waste Management website.
