FETCH! March 2021 Keeping People and Pets Together We are thrilled to announce the launch of the OMHS Pet Food Bank to provide assistance to pet owners in need. The program ensures that pets receive food and supplies to stay with their families and in their homes. With the ongoing pandemic the need has never been greater in our community. The program is made possible thanks to funding provided by the Government of Canada and United Way Halton & Hamilton through the Emergency Community Support Fund (ECSF). The OMHS Pet Food Bank provides dependable quality food and pet care products through a network of established partner agencies and food banks. The food bank is also supported by generous donations from corporate sponsors and individuals. Our team of dedicated volunteers is currently picking up donations, packaging pet food, and delivering to agency partners. If you know of anyone in need of food for their pet, please visit the OMHS Pet Food Bank. For questions, please contact the Pet Food Bank at: foodbank@omhs.ca or call 905-845-1551 x 127. As you can see, she really is loving her new home and her parents are spoiling her like crazy. She spends most of her days on her multiple (yes multiple) dog beds and loves playing with her toys. She will be missed by OMHS staff and her foster family, but we are so happy she found such a loving home!
Thank You for Sharing the Love This past Valentine’s Day, Order of Canada recipient Dr. Anne Innis Dagg captivated audience members who tuned in to meet her, learn more about giraffes and ask questions about her incredible journey. We were joined by a broad range of participants, from curious studens to foremost authority on the giraffe. The live Q&A session was open to all who had purchased a ticket to watch the story of Anne’s life as told in the award- winning film, The Woman Who Loves Giraffes. Read more. Bonded Bunny Buddies: Boston and Claire If there's anything we've learned from these difficult times, it is that staying in touch with our loved ones is of utmost importance. Lucky for Boston and Claire, they never have to be without their best bud. These two
rabbits are bonded and truly can't bear to be apart. Rabbits, by nature, are social animals. While their desire for a friend can be partially met by a human, we're just not as fluent in "rabbit" as our furry friends would like us to be. So, why adopt two rabbits? Well, if the cute factor isn't enough to convince you, consider that two rabbits are actually less work than one! Pair- bonded rabbits are better able to deal with stress and require less attention. This doesn't mean that they will be less likely to bond with their human family members. In fact, rabbits that have their social needs met by another rabbit friend tend to be even more likely to bond with their people. Consider saving two lives today, and adopt Boston and Claire. They have so much love still to give! Take the Puppy Mills Pledge The Oakville & Milton Humane Society is a proud member of Humane Canada and applauds its ongoing efforts to educate the public on the many ways they can help prevent people from unknowingly supporting puppy mills. Unfortunately, Canada has a thriving puppy mill industry due to the high demand from people eager to bring a young dog into their lives. The only way to tackle the supply is by putting a halt to the demand. One way you can help is for you, your family, friends and colleagues to adopt from the Oakville & Milton Humane Society, another local
humane society, SPCA, or rescue. We also encourage you to take the pledge today to help stop puppy mills! Veterinarian Spotlight: Fourth Line Animal Hospital The Oakville & Milton Humane Society (OMHS) does not employ an on-site veterinarian and is therefore dependent on the veterinary professionals in our community. This month's spotlight is on the Fourth Line Animal Hospital which helps provide our animals with everything they need, from thorough examinations, rabies vaccinations, and spay/neuter surgeries, to more involved medical services for our sick or injured animals. Dr. Gursharn Dev established the practice in 1999 and in 2004 reached out to the OMHS to offer his assistance for the homeless pets in our care. Dr. Dev and his team have provided steady support to the OMHS team for more than 15 years. While most recently, the hospital primarily performs spays and neuters, Dr. Dev's contributions to the Society over the years has been considerable. Read more.
