Hurricane Sally 4 September 16, 2020 Hurricane Sally made landfall early on the morning of September 16 across Gulf Shores, Alabama. The greatest impacts to our forecast area came in the form of very heavy rain, flooding on and away from area rivers, and many tornado warnings. Over 25,000 Escambia County residents filed for FEMA assistance. And the unmet needs were initially noted at $15.1 million. www.bereadyalliance.org
Now What? There is no Immediate Disaster Case Management (IDCMP) and there will not be a federal Disaster Case Management Plan (DCMP). But again, Escambia County Florida community has 25,000 FEMA Claimants from Hurricane Sally. Coordination Idea Collaboration Communication www.bereadyalliance.org
Coordination Breaking Down Traditional Silos Identifying the resources each local agency received 1 and what their challenges were in effectively and efficiently disturbing funds. Ensuring that each agency felt their respective 2 missions could be equally represented in meeting the Unmet Needs of the survivors through a consolidated process. Including National VOAD and Florida VOAD partners in the 3 coordination of long-term recovery and being very specific about how each could help survivors and local agencies. www.bereadyalliance.org
The Idea “Doing the Most Good, For the Most People” Solution 1. Select one local agency for disaster case management. 2. Create Unmet Needs Table with as many local agencies with disaster funding as possible. Create A Process 1. Who is on the team is just as important as who is leading the process. 2. Establish trust through clear communication and an organized but flexible case management system that meets the documentation demands of numerous funders. www.bereadyalliance.org
The Hurricane Sally Mission • Conduct as many needs assessments as possible using the World Renew platform both in-person and virtually. • Locally administer the Hurricane Sally Disaster Case Management program using funding from the US Department of Labor’s Displaced Workers Grant. • Create a process for Unmet Needs that verifies a survivor’s storm- related damages, provides a review for funders to listen and determine support level, and is flexible enough to meet the unique documentation requirements for funders. www.bereadyalliance.org

Never Letting The Story End Reminding everyone that just because you no longer see the damage from the curb, does not mean the recovery is over. www.bereadyalliance.org
The Sally Recovery Results • $406,000 was secured for the local DCMP program for 18 months of operation. • Over 425 Needs Assessments have been completed. • 417 cases opened. • 269 cases referred to other nonprofit agencies for additional services. • Over $1.5 million raised for Unmet Needs. • Currently, 58 homes are under repair and an additional 28 in the pipeline. • New partnership were made with local housing officials to assist residents on the SHIP waiting list. www.bereadyalliance.com
