Guess what? We just scored another Old Cars - ‘Golden The Editior reserves the right to accept or reject Quill Award’ thanks to your efforts in making our little magazine any contributions. a stand-out amongst the old car magazine world! Actually we Deadline is 20th of each month are in good company. Our friends from the CLC in Australia, North Texas, North Jersey USA and the LaSalle Appreciation Society also picked up a Golden Quill. Read elsewhere. Infact, let me share a little secret with you - this month’s cover 2 is the fifth Kiwi Cadillac to appear on the cover this year! I have a couple more Kiwi Cadillacs put aside I can use in coming Cadillacclubofnz.org issues and Kiwi content this month is amongst the most I have received and been able to publish for many an issue. Keep it up - your Editor and Executive will love you for it!! Talking about love, Pres. Ian Lind sent me in a story of he and Elsie’s beloved ‘58 which enjoys this months cover. It is a fine club example and looks befitting with their tropical garden background at their New Plymouth property. This pic could have been taken in Hawaii in the 1950s! Also in our Kiwi-packed issue this month we have coverage from Beach Hop and elswhere in the country as a result of Kiwi members getting out and about over our Kiwi Covid-free summer! Details of our 2021 Cadillac Nationals are included here plus a special flyer is attached. Have a read and I suggest you book now for what should be a “cool” event, if you will excuse the pun - when you see where the venue is. Please keep up the momentum and send in your Kiwi stories and photos! Safe cruising as temps drop down a gear! Ron - Ed We formed our New Zealand club in 1973 and celebrated our 40th Anniversary in 2013 making us one of the oldest Cadillac clubs in the world. We are proud to be an International Affiliate of the world-wide Cadillac LaSalle Club of the USA - itself formed in 1958.
Huntly in The Waikato Hi Ron, a quick report on the Huntly Lake Hop from Sat. 27th March. A new event for the Huntly area at the old solid energy mine site. This is now in private ownership and the owners are restoring the lake and eventually will be a aquatic park for swimming, kayaking etc, with bush walks etc. This is an amazing venture and the show was to raise awareness of the project. There was a great turnout of cars, of every description. Fire trucks, army vehicles and a great display of old MOT cars. The 57 finally got an outing, now back together after the Raglan AGM disaster. Only 4 Cadillacs on show being my 57, a very familiar 69 Eldorado, a super cool 50 sedan from Auckland and a late model CTS. It was certainly a great event with a band and entertainment for the kids and a whole heap of interesting cars. This will be a annual event so bring on next year, Cheers Ian B [Thanks Ian. Great looking show, great pics and great article - Ed] 3 Cadillacclubofnz.org

More memories of Fred Bausch! More great old photos of yester-year were found for this issue: Auto Shows Proved Popular to Des Moines Motoring Enthusiasts. You may not consider Des Moines, Iowa to be an automotive capital, but its motorized heritage actually runs deep. In 1887, William Morrison built an electric car in a downtown Des Moines basement laboratory. Fred and August Duesenberg got their start building Mason cars in a garage on Des Moines’ Locust Street. And the capital city was home to Iowa’s first automobile show in May 1910. Revolving eight- pointed stars marked each manufacturer’s display at the 1940 Auto Show. Wouldn’t you like to step back in time and check out the used cars on the lot at Barton Inc., a Pontiac dealership tonight? Images courtesy of Americar. [It reminds me of a scene from American Graffiti, albeit a few years later! - Ed] 5 Cadillacclubofnz.org Fred King Motors LTD: Chrysler – Dodge – Fargo Trucks. This early-1960s image contains Fred King Motors LTD located at “Kings Corner” in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, at 11th and 3rd Ave. South in what appears to be a converted house. It appears that only used cars are on display here, so new car sales may have been handled elsewhere. When this Chrysler Products sales agency was formed is unknown at this time; however, the earliest reference we found was a newspaper advertisement placed in 1958. A Lethbridge August 1966 “Yellow Pages” ad lists King Motors at this same location. A circa 1970 photo exists at Lethbridge – A Visual History showing a modern purpose-built building for the dealership with no reference to its location. Image courtesy of Americar. mY ‘58 Caddy! It came from the USA. It is a very pretty torquoise blue colour and it lives in the owners tropical garden oasis. All the trappings of the late 1950s Copacabana-scene, so colourful and lavish back then. Enjoy the entertaining read on how Pres. Ian and First Lady Elsie came to own such a beautiful example: My 1958 Cadillac coupe Deville.... It was thinking it must be about 2007 or 8 when I had just finished restoring a 1934 Buick roadster convertible and with little else to do, I decided one evening to just surf the net (like we do!!) with no specific reason in mind, just killing time looking at old cars! I fortunately stumbled on a site that was selling a Cadillac on behalf of an estate [they call them a consular in the States], I think that’s how you spell it. 6 Wow I was impressed with the Caddy and as they say, the rest is history. We made contact with the agent [Consular] acting for the family to Cadillacclubofnz.org find out more details about the car. It had been parked-up in an elderly gentleman’s garage with a couple of other cars for an extremely long time and not been driven for some 15-20 odd years. The family had settled on a price that they thought was a good market value????? We thought it wasn’t far out of the ball-park and so we made an offer to buy. That is when all hell broke out. No way was the family going to see Pop’s pride and joy leave the States and so they declined our offer. We tried a counter offer with more dollars but to no avail. We pretty much resigned to the fact that we would just settle on our 1934 Buick and enjoy that for the time being until the energy to look again for a project. Some 8-10 weeks later when again doing evening surfing on the net, HELLO what’s this 1958 Cadillac doing still on the market and unsold? Hence a quick email to the agent to see what the hell was going on and as we originally thought the car was overpriced for the American market anyway. We resurrected our first offer and hello we had them talking. They suggested that if we lifted our offer they could yes, could make a deal! However I was confident we had the cards and so declined to lift our offer and we waited to hear. The following two weeks seemed like two months but they eventually replied and accepted our offer. Immediately we started the process to get payment to them to secure the vehicle, which we then had transported to an agent facility in California. >>>Continued next page
My ‘58 Caddy! The Cadillac arrived in Auckland some six weeks later and we were excited to drive up and secure the car that made Marilyn Monroe so famous. Unfortunately when we arrived the car had been damaged by an undesirable half brain delinquent forklift driver who had hit the front of the car with the front forks, damaging the front left fender and the front edge of the bonnet and laying over the bonnet finials!!!!!! We were set for the haul back to the Naki with a damaged car. Have you ever tried to claim insurance from a shipping company? Soooooo frustrating! 7 We gassed up with some NZ Gas and set off. Well all went well to Rangiriri when we heard a common Cadillacclubofnz.org sound that you just don’t want to know, and as we Great ‘50s interior. Glory Days in an Eldorado! ~Part One ~ Earlier this year, Jason and his family went Eldo-riding down South. Jason sent me a superb a selection of wonderful ‘Dashboard Postcards’ from their Epic Kiwi Summer Roadtrip around the South Island in the Eldo recently: Across to Picton on the ferry, down to Christchurch, Queenstown and Wanaka, over to Haast and up 10 the West Coast to Nelson and back home! Cadillacclubofnz.org I always thought owning a classic car would be hard work, like travelling with a toddler: moments of amusement, but mainly temperamental and unpredictable, and likely to abruptly stop you by the side of the road with spills and tears.... Bias aside, I have to say the Eldo has impressed me this trip. For over 2,000kms, it just happily and comfortably devoured the road for hours at a time without missing a beat (aside from a moment of exciting brake fade after a particularly long and steep downhill forest slalom!) This is such a great car! Regards, Jason PS- I will feature Jasons great pics over the next few issues - Ed
