“Few things bond people as powerfully as singing together,” John Langstaff, Revels founder The Christmas Revels 2020 A Virtual Celebration Sponsorship Proposal
The Christmas Revels Directed by Patrick Swanson - George Emlen, music director December 18-31, 2020 For the first time in 50 years, the annual Christmas Revels will not be celebrated live in Harvard’s historic Sanders Theatre. The shortest day will come, and the year will die. As any one of the thousands of Revels attendees knows, that is never the end of the story … For this extraordinary year we are creating a memorable and joyful virtual Christmas Revels - an inspiring mix of new performances, a toe-tapping journey through our rich video archives, and a few exciting surprises, spanning half a century and a good half of the globe. This December, a smaller band of performers will walk into an empty Sanders Theatre to fulfill the promise of “… singing, to keep the year alive.” This merry band will be joined by two stalwart audience members who have been present since the first Christmas Revels in 1971: the marble statues of James Otis and Josiah Quincy. James and Josiah remember every song, every dance, and every “Welcome Yule!” and are quite excited to share their vivid memories with us. Audiences will be able to relive their favorite Christmas Revels moments and enjoy performances by their favorite artists, past and present, including our very special guest, cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

What is Revels? Bringing tradition to life for 50 years Revels, Inc. based in Watertown, MA, is a 501 (c) 3 performing arts organization founded in 1971 by musician and educator John Langstaff. In 1975, Revels began to expand with the founding of Revels North in Hanover, NH. Today, there are nine active Revels companies throughout North America. Each Revels group has its own non-profit status, and is contractually and artistically affiliated with Revels, Inc. Since 1971, nearly two million people nationwide have joined in the song and dance of Revels’ seasonal celebrations. Revels creates a truly unique blend of music, dance and storytelling in its staged celebrations of the winter solstice and other seasons. Our creativity stems from a rich heritage of cultural celebrations, and from the tradition bearers from the communities we celebrate.
