2021 LEARNING IN YEAR 7 THE LAKES COLLEGE Independent Learners: WHAT'S Wellbeing for Learning INSIDE 21st century skills Students need to develop a resilient and independent attitude to learning Wellbeing for Learning for both academic success and a well-rounded life. Staying in your comfort zone is not effective in developing resilience and independence because Year 7 Curriculum 2021 we are better off when challenged to not be complacent in that comfort. “21st century skills” are the attributes and skills taught throughout the Events & Workshops Australian Curriculum Prep-Year 12 that students need to prepare them for higher education, work and engagement in a complex and rapidly changing Subject Rotations world. “Personal and social skills” include: adaptability/flexibility management (self, career, time, planning and Learning to study in Year 7 organising) character (resilience, mindfulness, open- and fairmindedness, self- Study BOSS awareness) leadership, citizenship, cultural awareness, and 21st century skills & ethical (and moral) understanding. Character Strengths As students move up into higher year levels, the complexity of learning and the need for self-managing and emotional intelligence increases. Students need to be independently driven and focused in their studies by learning how to self-regulate their thinking and learning habits. Students who rely on others in their learning often struggle to develop their own skills needed for independence when it really counts. The new senior QCE system requires students to be more independent than ever before, so these skills are a priority to develop in Junior Secondary. Learning how to operate in different classes with different combinations of students is a great way to learn resilience and emotional intelligence. Effective learning in the classroom also allows for better work-life balance outside the class where friendships can flourish. Learning is enhanced by the sharing outside the classroom; it is where we can build community through sharing our knowledge and experiences. YEAR 7 2021
What will I learn? Year 7 Core subjects are in line with the Australian Curriculum requirements for Year 7 learning. These subjects are scheduled all year. FAVE and the Find Your North wellbeing lessons occur once per week. Future Problem Solving and Individual Curriculum support are only offered through the Learning Enrichment department. Taster Rotation subjects are just that, an 8-week taste of a range of subjects that can be chosen as electives from Year 8. These subjects are all compulsory for Year 7 students. They provide opportunities to develop a range of skills across different curriculum areas. Students can work out their strengths and interests, and challenge themselves to move out of their comfort zone. TLC students work in the stretch zone. We want to build resilient and brave learners who are well rounded individuals. Students will be automatically enrolled in the rotation groups and this will be reflected on their timetable for the start of Year 7. Rest assured that the general stationery list will cover the basics for these rotation subjects. We will communicate the rotations as soon as enrolments are confirmed and timetables finalised. Learning to study in Year 7 Learning to be an effective learner is a highly prioritised skill in a TLC Secondary Student. We ask that students embrace the challenge to learn how they learn best. This can occur in PC time, every subject class, in study@home time, and through study skills drop ins offered regularly. Study is more that completing tasks; it is an attitude to learning Se rn lea t Lea o and use of effective strategies, such as goal setting, note- rnin t goa g how y making, revising, practising and prioritising. d ls stu These skills can be learned if the learner wants to learn them. We see time and a again students who skip this part and end up struggling later because they haven't formed the learning habits needed as they progress through secondary school.
