Year of the Sea In 2018 we’re celebrating Wales’ outstanding coastline, and inviting visitors to discover new epic experiences all around our shores, with special events and attractions throughout the year. This is our Year of the Sea. The 870-mile Wales Coast Path runs the whole length of our coastline: the first continuous coastal path of any country in the world. It passes through seascapes of breath-taking variety, from flat wetlands to towering cliffs, featuring hundreds of harbours, coves, inlets and islands – and around 230 beaches. Wherever you are in Wales, you’re never more than just over an hour from the sea. So wherever you stay - rural cottage or boutique hotel, yurt or medieval castle – there’ll be an epic shore nearby. With, a language and culture that’s the oldest in Britain, a warm Welsh welcome and food and drink made with skill by passionate people… this is the greatest coastal experience of 2018. Welcome to our epic shores. #Findyourepic 19

Discover Flintshire’s Coast in The Year of the Sea Flintshire’s Coast stretches for 25 miles/40km from Chester to Gronant. The Dee Estuary is a very special place where industry old and new sits alongside historic gems such as Flint Castle, surrounded by internationally important wildlife. Enjoy fresh, bracing air and views that change every day with the tides and seasons. The Story of Flintshire’s Coast The rich, sheltered waters of the Dee Estuary would have attracted fishermen thousands of years ago but the first true industry was probably the Romans smelting lead ore at Oakenholt in around 40AD. As industry developed along the coast, the estuary became a busy shipping route, exporting coal, lead and other goods. The first lighthouse was built at Talacre in 1777. Greenfield Dock brought pilgrims to St Winefride’s Well but also served the industry in Greenfield Valley. Many fine ships were built at Connah’s Quay and by 1900 Flint Port was handling 8429 tons of cargo. Today many of the old industries have gone and nature continues to soften the scars on the landscape. Modern, cleaner industries flourish alongside the estuary where over 130,000 waders and wildfowl spend the winter and everyone can enjoy the new, improved access to this unique coastline. tle Fflint t Marsh Walk h Cors y Fflint A54 8 Flintshire Deeside Bridge Industrial Park KEY A5117 50 ~ Pont Sir y Parc Diwydiant A5 Fflint Glannau Dyfrdwy ~ Wales Coast Path The Rock ~ Llwybr Arfordir Cymru Y Graig We B5 12 Garden City Alternative route La pre R 9 Ω ny Llwybr Amgen r A ivers Connah’s Quay fon ide A548 Cei Connah Shotton yng Ng A49 4 Place of interest B5126 we pra Lle o ddiddordeb Wepre Park Queensferry Parc Gwepra Parking Riv Ω Ewloe Castle er De eA Parcio Castell Ewloe 4 fon 9 A4 Dy A548 Viewpoint frd CHESTER ~ wy ~ The Cop CAER Golygfan Ω B5 Ω Cafe 12 ⁄ 9~ Caffe ~ Riverside Walk A5104 Railway station Gorsaf rheilffordd Saltney Flintshire Audio Guide.
