Sultan-i-Rome is a life member of the Pakistan Historical Society and a sitting member of its Executive Committee. He is the author of more than fifty research articles in academic journals, books, anthologies, and proceedings, and two working papers. The Betrayal of East Pakistan Lt. Gen. A.A.K. Niazi Lt. Gen. A.A.K. Niazi of the Eastern Command was the man whose fate it was to direct the operation which resulted in the dismemberment of Pakistan. Many books have been written about that unforgettable year in Pakistan’s history, 1971, and the terrible events that it spawned. But finally one of the main actors of the drama has volunteered his own account of the events leading to the disaster. This book fills a huge gap in the recorded history of the period, which could hardly be considered complete or authentic without the contribution of such a major protagonist. 2021 356 pages Lt. Gen. A. A. K. Niazi (1915–2004) remains one of the most Paperback decorated soldiers of the Pakistan Army. He was Commandant, 978-0-19-579275-1 School of Infantry and Tactics, Quetta, and taught at Command 216x138 mm Rs 895 and Staff College, Quetta. 1

Cook This book addresses the nineteenth century expansion and consolidation of British colonial power in the Sindh region of South Asia. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach and employs a fine-grained, nuanced, and situated reading of multiple agents and their actions. It explores how the political and administrative incorporation of territory (i.e., annexation) by East India Company informs the conversion of intra-cultural distinctions into socio-historical conflicts amongst the 2021 colonized and colonizers. The book focuses on colonial direct 312 pages Paperback rule, rather than the more commonly studied indirect rule, of 978-0-19-070432-2 South Asia. 216x138 mm Rs 995 Dr Matthew A. Cook is Professor of South Asian and Postcolonial Studies at North Carolina Central University, USA. `We are Lovers of the Qalandar’ Piety, Pilgrimage, and Ritual in Pakistani Sufi Islam Jürgen Wasim Frembgen This book is about Pakistan’s most popular Sufi Saint, Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, whose shrine in Sehwan Sharif is one of the most fascinating sanctuaries in the Muslim world. The present ethnographic study is organized around three themes: piety, pilgrimage, and ritual. Thus, its focus is first on visual culture and ‘material religion’ as well as various aspects of religious aesthetics which highlight how sacred spaces are constructed and shaped. Secondly, it deals with the year-round pilgrimage 2021 and the remarkable ritual agents in the cult. The third theme is 192 pages the spectacular trance dance known as dhamal. Rs 695 A Leadership Odyssey Muslim Separatism and the Achievement of the Separate State of Pakistan Sikandar Hayat This book offers a unique historiography of the phenomenon of Muslim separatism as it affected and shaped modern South Asia. It describes the journeys of six prominent Muslim leaders of British India: Syed Ahmad Khan, who laid the foundation of the Muslim separatist political movement; Sultan Muhammad Aga Khan III, Syed Ameer Ali, and Maulana Mohamed Ali, who strengthened and developed it in their own ways; Allama 2021 Muhammad Iqbal, who took its cause further and formulated the 340 pages idea of a separate state; and, of course, Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Paperback Ali Jinnah, who, after making the demand for a separate state, 978-969-7340-13-2 transformed it into the nationalist Pakistan Movement and led it 216x138 mm successfully to achieve the separate state of Pakistan. The Punjab under Imperialism 1885 -1947 Imran Ali This comprehensive survey of British rule in the Punjab demonstrates that colonial policy-making led to many of the socio-economic and political problems currently plaguing Pakistan and Indian Punjab. Subordinating development goals to its political and military imperatives, the colonial state co- operated with the dominant social classes, the members of which became the major beneficiaries of agricultural colonization. Even while the rulers tried to use the vast resources of the Punjab to advance imperial purposes, they were themselves being used by 2021 their collaborators to advance implacable private interests. Such 276 pages processes effectively retarded both nationalism and social Paperback 978-0-19-579924-8 change and resulted in the continued backwardness of the 216x138 mm region even after the departure of the British. Rs 595 Professor Imran Ali has obtained his Honours degree from the University of Sussex, and Doctorate from the Australian National University. Zulfi Bhutto of Pakistan His Life and Times Stanley Wolpert Bhutto was a charismatic and contradictory man. He climbed the heights of power with amazing swiftness, winning a seat in the central Cabinet of Pakistan at the unprecedented age of thirty. Wolpert weaves Pakistan’s turbulent politics and repeated wars with India together with Bhutto’s ambitious manoeuvring, tracing his rise as Foreign Minister, to the founding of his own political party, the PPP, and finally, leadership of the nation. The story of Bhutto’s sometimes 2021 inspiring and sometimes quixotic career is a fascinating one and 432 pages Wolpert tells it brilliantly through Bhutto’s triumphant years in Paperback the mid-1970s, the military coup in 1977, and his treacherous 978-0-19-070427-8 216x138 mm imprisonment and execution in 1979. Rs 750 Stanley Wolpert (1927–2019) was Professor Emeritus of History at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is the author of Shameful Flight: The Last Years of the British Empire in India; Gandhi’s Passion: The Life and Legacy of Mahatma Gandhi; Nehru: A Tryst with Destiny; Jinnah of Pakistan; and A New History of India. 4

Cover Point Impressions of Leadership in Pakistan Jamsheed Marker Preface by Stanley Wolpert A lifetime in the diplomatic service of Pakistan gave Jamsheed Marker a unique vantage point—in cricket terms, he was at cover point, i.e. ‘near enough to the wicket to follow the action around the stumps…yet sufficiently distant for a general overview of the state of play’. This work relates the first-hand impressions of Mr Marker, which he garnered during his illustrious career, starting with Quaid-i-Azam M.A. Jinnah up 2021 220 pages until the rule of General Pervez Musharraf. Paperback Jamsheed Marker was a veteran Pakistani diplomat from a 978-0-19-070424-7 216x138 mm well-known Parsee family of Quetta and Karachi. Rs 895 6
