Originally from Sheffield, the Revd Kate Bottley trained for ordination at Saint John's College, Nottingham and was deaconed at Southwell Minster in 2008 and priested the following year. She served her curacy at Skegby, Stanton Hill and Teversal before taking up her first incumbency at Blyth, Scrooby and Ranskill in 2011. Before being ordained Kate was a Head of RE in secondary schools in Sheffield. During her first incumbency Kate also served as Chaplain at North Nottinghamshire Further Education College. As a result of appearing on Channel 4’s Gogglebox, Kate’s media profile grew and, with the opportunity to extend her communication of the Gospel more broadly, Kate left full time stipendiary parish ministry to become a self-supporting minister working across the media. She currently presents the BBC's flagship religious show Songs of Praise and BBC Radio 2's Good Morning Sunday. In 2020 Kate completed three triathlons in three days in three cities, raising a million pounds for Sport's Relief, and is a keen cold water swimmer. Kate has written for a number of publications including The Radio Times and The Guardian and is a regular public speaker. Kate is licensed to St Saviour's, Retford where she takes services and helps with occasional offices. She and Graham have two children, Ruby (19) and Arthur (17). The Revd Dr Stephen Hippisley-Cox is rector of Willoughby on the Wolds with Wysall and Widmerpool, and Area Dean of East Bingham. Originally an academic mathematician, he trained for the priesthood at Westcott House in Cambridge and was ordained deacon and priest in 1999 and 2000 respectively. He served his curacy in Ollerton with Boughton, in the north of the diocese, and had a few years as associate priest at St Paul’s Wilford Hill in south Nottingham before moving to his current post on the southernmost tip of the diocese in 2007. Stephen is happiest when he is either teaching people about the things of God, or when he is helping people learn to pray better. These twin callings are at the heart of what he has offered across the diocese over the years, from his work in spiritual direction to helping train readers and licensed lay ministers, and they continue to inform his work with clergy and lay leaders in the East Bingham deanery. For him, spirituality and prayer are at the heart of what it means to chase after God with all that we have, and to love our neighbour as ourselves. Benedictine, catholic, with a passion for social justice, he is married to Julia, an academic. Together they have three children in their early twenties. iii

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord: The Lord’s name be praised. Music: Philip Moore (b. 1943) 2
THE PRESENTATION, COLLATION AND INSTALLATION PRESENTATION The Dean presents the Canons-designate to the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham, The Rt Revd Paul Williams, saying: Right Reverend Father in God, I present: The Revd Kate Bottley, to be collated to the Canonry of Eaton; The Revd Dr Stephen Hippisley-Cox, to be collated to the Canonry of Norwell Tertia Pars, both in this Cathedral Church. COLLECT FOR VOCATION AND MINISTRY Bishop Let us pray. The Canons-designate kneel before the Bishop. Silence is kept as ordained ministers present recall their ordination promises. God our Father, Lord of all the world, through your Son you have called us into the fellowship of your universal Church: hear our prayer for your faithful people that in their vocation and ministry each may be an instrument of your love, and give to your servants Kate and Stephen the needful gifts of grace; through our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. 3
COLLATION The Registrar reads the Deed of Collation and the Bishop then says Bishop Kate, I collate you to the Canonry of Eaton; Stephen, I collate you to the Canonry of Norwell Tertia Pars; in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. The new Canons are vested with their mantles, and kneel once more before the Bishop BLESSING Bishop Kate and Stephen, may God fill you at all times with his wisdom, his love, his strength and his peace, and may his blessing be upon you now and always. Amen. PSALM 133 sung by the choir, during which new Canons and other clergy, together with the Bishop and Registrar, move to the Quire for the Installation. Behold, how good and joyful a thing it is: brethren, to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down unto the beard: even unto Aaron’s beard, and went down to the skirts of his clothing. Like as the dew of Hermon: which fell upon the hill of Sion. For there the Lord promised his blessing: and life for evermore. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Music: Edward Turner (b. 1992) 4
INSTALLATION The Dean takes the new Canons to their stalls, saying to each, in turn N, I place you in this stall assigned to you as a member of the College of Canons of this Cathedral Church with all its responsibilities and opportunities for service. After both new Canons have been installed, they say together I solemnly declare that I will serve the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Southwell by exercising the ministry laid upon me as a member of its Foundation with openness to God, with zeal for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and his Kingdom, and in obedience to its Constitution and Statutes. Dean Almighty God, the giver of all that is good, we pray that you will defend these your servants Kate and Stephen, that they may so serve you here on earth that after this life they may inherit eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 5
OFFICE HYMN sung by the choir as the procession returns to the Nave. Eternal Monarch, King most high, Whose blood hath brought redemption nigh, By whom the death of Death was wrought And conquering grace’s battle fought: Ascending to the throne of might, And seated at the Father’s right, All power in heaven is Jesu’s own, That here his manhood had not known. Yea, angels tremble when they see How changed is our humanity; For flesh hath purged what flesh had stained, And God, the flesh of God, hath reigned. Be thou our joy and strong defence, Who art our future recompense: So shall the light that springs from thee Be ours through all eternity. O risen Christ, ascended Lord, All praise to thee let earth accord, Who art, while endless ages run, With Father and with Spirit One. Amen. Words: Latin, c. 5th century Tune: AD CENAM AGNI NEH 128 (t. i) trans. John Mason Neale (1818-66) 6
PSALMODY sung by the choir Psalm 147: 1–11 O praise the Lord, for it is a good thing to sing praises unto our God : yea, a joyful and pleasant thing it is to be thankful. The Lord doth build up Jerusalem : and gather together the out-casts of Israel. He healeth those that are broken in heart : and giveth medicine to heal their sickness. He telleth the number of the stars : and calleth them all by their names. Great is our Lord, and great is his power : yea, and his wisdom is infinite. The Lord setteth up the meek : and bringeth the ungodly down to the ground. O sing unto the Lord with thanksgiving : sing praises upon the harp unto our God; Who covereth the heaven with clouds, and prepareth rain for the earth: and maketh the grass to grow upon the mountains, and herb for the use of men; Who giveth fodder unto the cattle : and feedeth the young ravens that call upon him. He hath no pleasure in the strength of an horse : neither delighteth he in any man's legs. But the Lord's delight is in them that fear him: and put their trust in his mercy. Please stand Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Music: Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) Please sit 7
FIRST LESSON read by the Revd Canon Kate Bottley Isaiah 61 The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion— to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display his glory. They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. Strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, foreigners shall till your land and dress your vines; but you shall be called priests of the Lord, you shall be named ministers of our God; you shall enjoy the wealth of the nations, and in their riches you shall glory. Because their shame was double, and dishonour was proclaimed as their lot, therefore they shall possess a double portion; everlasting joy shall be theirs. For I the Lord love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. Their descendants shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the Lord has blessed. 8
I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. Please stand MAGNIFICAT sung by the choir My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Words: Luke 1: 46–55 Music: from EVENING SERVICE IN A MINOR T. Tertius Noble (1867-1953) Please sit 9
SECOND LESSON read by the Revd Canon Stephen Hippisley-Cox Luke 4:14–21 Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’ And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, ‘Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’ Please stand NUNC DIMITTIS sung by the choir Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen: thy salvation. Which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Words: Luke 2: 29–32 Music: from EVENING SERVICE IN A MINOR T. Tertius Noble (1867-1953) 10
CREED I believe in God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried. He descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. LESSER LITANY, LORD’S PRAYER AND RESPONSES sung by the Canon Precentor and choir The Lord be with you: And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Please sit or kneel Lord, have mercy upon us: Christ, have mercy upon us: Lord, have mercy upon us. 11
Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us: And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save the Queen: And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy Ministers with righteousness: And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people: And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord: Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us: And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. 12
COLLECT FOR THE DAY O God the King of glory, who hast exalted thine only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph unto thy kingdom in heaven: We beseech thee, leave us not comfortless; but send to us thine Holy Ghost to comfort us, and exalt us unto the same place whither our Saviour Christ is gone before, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen. COLLECT FOR PEACE O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both, our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that, by thee, we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. COLLECT FOR AID AGAINST ALL PERILS Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. Music: Philip Moore (b. 1943) Please sit 13
