Prayers for the Morning Prelude – Fugue, K 30 Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) The Minister shall read aloud these Sentences of the Scriptures that follow. Rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn to the LORD your God; for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kind- ness. Joel 2. 13. O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: let the whole earth stand in awe of him. Psalm 96. 9. Opening Hymn #350 (Common Praise-Canada) Stand up and bless the Lord, you people of God's choice; stand up and bless the Lord of hosts with heart and soul and voice. Though high above all praise, above all blessing high, who would not fear God's holy name, and laud and magnify? O for the living flame from God's own altar brought, to touch our lips, our minds inspire, and wing to heaven our thought! God is our strength and song, who makes salvation ours; then be God's love in Christ proclaimed with all our ransomed powers. Stand up and bless the Lord; the Lord your God adore;
stand up and bless the glorious name henceforth for evermore. The Minister, turning to the people, shall say the Exhortation in the form following. DEARLY beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us be silent, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness of the same by his infinite goodness and mercy. A general Confession to be said of the whole Congregation with the Minister. God our Father, long-suffering, full of grace and truth, you create us from nothing and give us life. You give your faithful people new life in the water of baptism. You do not turn your face from us, nor cast us aside. We confess that we have sinned against you and our neighbour. We have wounded your love and marred your image in us. Restore us for the sake of your Son, and bring us to heavenly joy, in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Absolution, or Remission of sins, to be pronounced by the Priest alone. THE LORD enrich you with his grace, and nourish you with his blessing; the Lord defend you in trouble and keep you from all evil; the Lord accept your prayers, and absolve you from your offences, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Amen Minister. O LORD, open thou our lips; People. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. Minister. O God, make speed to save us; People. O Lord, make haste to help us. Minister. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
People. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Minister. Praise ye the Lord; People. The Lord’s Name be praised. Canticle The Song of Judith Judith 16:1,13-15 said together. Strike up the instruments, a song to my God with timbrels, chant to the Lord with cymbals; Sing to him a new song, exalt and acclaim his name. A new hymn I will sing to my God. O Lord, great are you and glorious, wonderful in power and unsurpassable. Let your every creature serve you; for you spoke, and they were made, You sent forth your spirit, and they were created; no one can resist your word. The mountains to their bases, and the seas, are shaken; the rocks, like wax, melt before your glance. But to those who fear you, you are very merciful. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning,
Is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Psalm 138 said together. I give you thanks, O LORD, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise; I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness; for you have exalted your name and your word above everything. On the day I called, you answered me, you increased my strength of soul. All the kings of the earth shall praise you, O LORD, for they have heard the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the ways of the LORD, for great is the glory of the LORD. For though the LORD is high, he regards the lowly; but the haughty he perceives from far away. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve me against the wrath of my enemies; you stretch out your hand, and your right hand delivers me. The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands. GLORY be to the Father,
and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The First Reading. Isaiah 6:1-8 Première lecture. Canticle BENEDICTUS said together Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; he has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets he promised of old, that he would save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham,
to set us free from the hands of our enemies, free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, to give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Reflection - Grace, Gratitude, and Gifts, Diana Butler Bass (workofhtepeople.com) Intercessions A General Thanksgiving, to be said by the Minister and people together. Accept, O Lord, our thanks and praise for all you have done for us. We thank you for the splendour of the whole creation, for the beauty of this world, for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of love.
We thank you for the blessing of family and friends, and for the loving care which surrounds us on every side. We thank you for setting us tasks which demand our best efforts, and for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy and delight us. We thank you also for those disappointments and failures that lead us to acknowledge our dependence on you alone. Above all, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the truth of his word and the example of his life; for his steadfast obedience, by which he overcame temptation; for his dying, through which he overcame death; for his rising to life again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom. Grant us the gift of your Spirit, that we may know Christ and make him known; and through him, at all times and in all places, may give thanks to you in all things. Amen. A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom. ALMIGHTY God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications to you; and promises that when two or three are gathered together in your Name you will grant their requests: Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of your servants, as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.
