WELCOME: YOUR PRESENCE IS A BLESSING We come to these High Holidays, each of us in our own spot on the continuum between extreme unease and openness to the unknown. Closing our eyes, we can almost feel the rush of sensation that comes with walking into the open tent: the greetings, the taking of seats, the voices joining with one another in song. Opening our eyes to the screens in front of us, we are woven together through technology, and through the shared experience of having journeyed through these months together. Rosh HaShanah celebrates the creation and re-creation of the world. May these services help us commit more deeply to the necessary re-creations we are in the midst of - personally, nationally, globally. Yom Kippur invites us to practice teshuvah, returning to what is most precious, meaningful, and true in our lives. As in past services, there will be lots of singing. We’ll hear the Torah speak to themes of struggle and transformation. We’ll evoke our breaking hearts with the cry of the shofar (ram’s horn). Kol Nidre calls us to forgiveness and release. If you are new to our community, don’t worry! Your service leaders will be your guides. Take care of yourselves during services. You are welcome to get up and stretch. May these High Holiday services be wells of hope from which you can draw in abundance in these uncertain times. L’shanah tovah! Blessings for a sweet new year. How good it is for sisters and brothers to be here together. Psalm 133 We come from a tale told long ago, passed on by the waves and the wind We’ve made it this far together you know, come brothers and sisters let’s sing! Come gather ‘round and hear the song, if you’re the wandering kind ‘Cause you can make it alone but just so you know, we leave no one behind Our mothers and fathers who have weathered the storms grew strong in the trials of their times, So we brothers and sisters l’dor vador, carry on with this song in our lives We’ll sing out this song for years to come, in a story without an end For how good it is to be among our brothers and sisters and friends. WE ARE LOVED We are embraced by arms that find us even when we are hidden from ourselves. We are touched by fingers that soothe us even when we are too proud for soothing. We are counseled by voices that guide us even when we are too embittered to hear. We are loved by an unending love. We are supported by hands that uplift us even in the midst of a fall. We are urged on by eyes that meet us even when we are too weak for meeting. We are loved by an unending love. Embraced, touched, soothed, and counseled, ours are the arms, the fingers, the voices; ours are the hands, the eyes, the smiles; We are loved by an unending love. Lyrics by Rabbi Rami Shapiro Music by Rabbi Shir Yaakov Feit SH’MA :אחָד ְ ִ מ ַע י ֶ שׂרָ אֵל יהוה אֱֹלהֵינּו יהוה ְ ׁש Shema yisrael Adonai eloheinu Adonai echad. Listen, all people who ask questions about the universe. The Source of all life is an unfolding process, and everything is connected to Oneness. :מלְכּותֹו לְעֹולָם וָעֶד ַ בּרּוְך ׁשם כְּבֹוד ָ Baruch shem kevod malchuto le’olam va’ed. AMIDAH - PRIVATE MEDITATION Let us dream Wildly unimaginable blessings … Blessings so unexpected, Blessings so beyond our hopes for this world, Blessings so unbelievable in this era, That their very existence Uplifts our vision of creation, Our relationships to each other, And our yearning for life itself. Let us dream Wildly unimaginable blessings … A complete healing of mind, body, and spirit, A complete healing for all, The end of suffering and strife, The end of plague and disease, When kindness flows from the river of love, When goodness flows from the river of grace, Awakened in the spirit of all beings, When Divine light, Radiating holiness, Is seen by everyone. Let us pray — With all our hearts — For wildly unimaginable blessings, So that the Divine will hear the call To open the gates of the Garden, Seeing that we haven’t waited, That we’ve already begun to repair the world, In testimony to our faith in life, Our faith in each other, And our faith in the Holy One, Blessed be the Universe. O Source and Strength of our lives, please hear us and lead us to grace. Our Guide deep within us, O hear us and give us compassion and mercy and peace. O guide us into grace: justice and mercy for all. O guide us and teach us, grant justice and mercy. We shall be free once again. Our Source, may we make this year a fresh beginning. Our Strength, may we grow from life’s challenges. Our Source, may we accept what we cannot change. Our Strength, may we change what we can. Our Source, may we soften into acceptance. Our Strength, may we brighten into joy. Our Source, may we gratefully receive what we are given. Our Strength, may we learn how to embrace our enemies. Chorus adapted from Rabbi Burt Jacobson 10
TREE OF LIFE - ANA EL NA O sweet Spirit, hear my prayer Help these words heal someone out there I am but a voice, just a cry in the air But I sing, nonetheless, in this pain we share O sweet friends, come and dry your eyes And hold each other by this Tree of Life I’m angry and tired of this great divide But I sing, nonetheless, with love on our side Ana El na refa na la... (Please G!d heal her now) O sweet souls who feel broken now We’ll heal together, somewhere, somehow Time and again, we have been let down But we sing, nonetheless, still whole and still proud Ana El na refa na la... (Please G!d heal her now) O sweet Spirit, hear my prayer Help these words heal someone out there Nefesh Mountain 11

MOURNERS KADDISH - INTERPRETATIVE TRANSLATION Praise the world, praise its fullness and its longing, its beauty and its grief. Praise stone and fire, lilac and river, and the solitary bird at the window. Praise the moment when the whole bursts through pain, And the moment when the whole bursts forth in joy. Praise the dying beauty with all your breath, and praising, see The beauty of the world is your own. Amen. Marcia Falk ALEINU INTENTION It is upon us to repair the broken places. It is upon us to face the truth no matter how difficult. It is upon us to see that justice is complex and not always easy. It is upon us to know when we have choices, and to make them. It is upon us to understand that our prayers are holy conversations. It is upon us to be mindful and to take our spirituality seriously. It is upon us to hold more than one idea of God in our heads at any given time. It is upon us to enjoy our bodies without shame. It is upon us to listen when others say no, and when they say yes. It is upon us to have fun and to spread it around. Trisha Arlin 13
