Emmons School The Raider Times May 6, 2022 From the Desk of Dr. Friedman As we head toward the end of the school year, we have many activities planned including our local assessments such as MAPS testing for 2nd-8th grades. This standardized test begins next week. Just like the Illinois Assessment of Readiness, we want students to be able to do their very best. Please make sure your students are getting a good night's sleep and eating breakfast every morning. Due to testing and the nature of the activities that occur at the end of the year, we will no longer offer remote learning when a student is home with COVID. Students cannot take assessments from home and remote learning is not congruent with many of the activities teachers have planned. FOCUS FEATURE 8th Grade Mrs. Jones, Ms. Theiler, Ms. Brenneman, Mrs. Kerrigan In math, students have just started a new unit on irrational numbers and the Pythagorean Theorem. Please be sure to ask them how to calculate the hypotenuse of a right triangle when given the two leg measurements! You will be impressed. This trimester, students have studied scientific notation, exponent rules, functions, and volume! Students continue to build confidence and understanding of math concepts this year. They are getting a great foundation for the Math 1 course next year at the high school. The 8th grade accelerated math class is getting ready to finish their last unit for Semester 2 and then will prepare to take the Math 1 Trimester 2 final exam from the high school. They will be studying during the next few weeks to prepare for the semester final. This semester, students worked on solving systems of equations, properties of triangles, logic problems, and statistics to name a few. They are off to a great start for high school next year! In science, students are studying energy and will finish the unit with an engineering activity that encompases them using their knowledge on energy and simple machines to build a small Rube Goldberg machine. The machine must use energy conversion to complete a task, such as popping a balloon. Earlier this year, students used the Engineering Design Cycle to make paper airplanes that had to fly a certain distance and land in an upright position. They also had to build a scale model of a shelter to keep them
FOCUS FEATURE Continued safe from a storm if stranded on an island. Students did a great job of building their shelters out of popsicle sticks and clay. Many were very resourceful and would do great if they had to survive in the woods! (You never know)! 8th Grade ELA is researching unsolved mysteries and writing research papers. In Social Studies students just finished reading Night, a memoir by Elie Wiesel based on his Holocaust experiences with his father in the Nazi German concentration camps at Auschwitz and Buchenwald. The 8th Grade ABC countdown has been fun. It started off strong with a lot of creativity for "A" Day. (Anything but a backpack.) The selections featured a shopping cart, suitcases, a soup pot, a baby stroller, and a wagon. Other fun ABC Countdown days have included: Christmas and Crocs Day, Donut Day, Eighties Day, Future Day, Grandma/Grandpa Day, Hawaiian Day, Iconic Duo Day, Jersey Day, and Kindergarten Help Day.
