ARCHWAY SCHOOL PUPIL PREMIUM REPORT 2020-21 The following information outlines the directly funded interventions along with the impact of each across the whole school, more programmes are planned and once they are confirmed this will be updated. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ Intervention: English/Maths/Science Online tutors Context: Tutors are identified as one of the most successful interventions on the EEF website toolkit. The national tutoring programme was funded by the catch-up funding but more session have been arranged and funded by PP. In addition to the national tutoring programme, 1:1 tutoring is also being used to support some students. More laptops and hardware has been purchased to support these programmes that have run with year 9-11 students, as the programmes are being run after school to ensure engagement. The programmes have an additional administrative cost. COVID – The programmes have been delayed from the intended roll out dates. Some programmes have continued with students accessing the programmes from home, but the engagement is not as high as when the programmes are carried out in school. Remote programmes will continue when the impact on the first cohort through has been assessed. We are using two providers Mytutor and Brilliant club. Both these providers assess impact after the programme of 15 weeks has been complete. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ Laptop donation scheme. Context: To help provide a laptop and connection to every student that needs one. The laptop donation scheme only involves a small amount of funding, mostly used to pay for donated laptops to be reconditioned and wiped ready for use by students. 35 laptops have been donated by the community (correct at 20/1/21) ______________________________________________________________________________________________ Intervention Additional Counselling services: Context: It has been clear that the demand for counselling services since lockdown has increased beyond our current capacity. More services will be brought in to meet the demand. COVID – The services are still being sort but this is being delayed in the current situation. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ Intervention: The Brilliant Club Context: The programme has been provided to year 8 PP students over the last few years. The Brilliant Club aims to provide opportunities for students from non-selective state schools to be proportionally represented at highly selective 7
ARCHWAY SCHOOL PUPIL PREMIUM REPORT 2020-21 Universities. It aims to ensure that students are being challenged in their learning and that their aspirations remain high. Students undertake 6 University style tutorials, delivered by a PHD lecturer, and submit a final assignment. Small group tuition, independent homework and feedback have been proven to be effective tools following research undertaken by the EEF. COVID – the 2019/2020 programme did not take place and the 2020/2021 is still being planned to be delivered remotely, however this maybe delayed. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ Intervention: Literacy Whole School Reading Programme Context: Tutors read from an age appropriate text and students follow in their copy of the book using a ruler. 20 mins per day in tutor time for year 7 to 10. This whole school reading scheme will benefit all students but this will have a greater impact on the PP students, giving them access to the reading material that they not have had access to. The purchase of the books is funded from PP, as are the tests. The biggest prior attainment gap between PP and non PP is reading so this will help address this difference. The impact has been hard to measure due to lock down however analysis of reading tests shows that progress is being made with the PP groups. Information on the reading tests forms part of the barriers to learning document. This document is acted by a number of stakeholders to intervene with individuals or small groups. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ Intervention: Numeracy Hegarty Maths Programme Context: Hegarty Maths is an online resource that helps students improve their Maths/numeracy. As students use it more it identifies weak topics for the students to practise more in order for them to progress. The programme also helps to support non specialists and inclusion staff to help them deliver a higher standard of maths education to all students, but it will benefit the more vulnerable. Intervention: SAM learning Context: An online learning platform that has a proven record of improving performance. This is used mainly by Science as a homework tool and used by students in inclusion. Increase disadvantaged students’ progress. This is being monitored via SAMlearning intervention package, the top 20 high users had a positive progress 8 of +0.26 based on the 2019 results. All PP students used the system in 2018- 8
ARCHWAY SCHOOL PUPIL PREMIUM REPORT 2020-21 2019 with the assistance of the PP learning mentor. In lockdown 1 the use of Sam learning increased, with high users showing a higher progress rate to non users (based on 2019 progress for 2020 results) Intervention: Literacy Lexonik and Lexonik LEAP : mostly funded from the KS3 catch up funding (2021/2022 this will be funded by PP) Context: This helps improve the literacy skills of students who enter Archway School below 90 KS2 Scaled score. Students follow a six week programme and attend small group sessions on a weekly basis. Students are identified by English and in Narrowing the gap meetings, reading tests and from the barriers to learning document. Previous Impact: The current year 7s that have completed the programme have shown on average a three year increase in reading age. All year 7 PP students completed the programme in 2018-2019 and increased their reading age on average by 2.3 years (0.2 lower than previous year). The programme was also rolled out to other students identified by English as needing reading support The organisation of the programme has been taken on by the literacy lead. Additional to the use of KS2 data all year groups will be having regular reading tests to identify the students that need the most support. The use of this additional testing will mean more focus on the correct identification of the students for the programme and greater analysis of impact of the programme. Student Survey June 2019 – 88% have found the programme useful (up 6% on last academic year). Intervention: Exam skills Elevate education Covid - This has been postponed in 2020 and 2021 however it is a successful programme which will be used again in 2022 Context: 30 year 11 students took part in a half day workshop focusing on improving examination techniques. The sessions focused on Memory Mnemonics and Ace your Exams. Impact: Feedback from students was positive highlighting improved self confidence in revision techniques and ideas. This took place in March 2019. Student Survey June 2019 – 75% found the programme useful (73% last year) Impact: The group came third in the county, continuing the success of previous years. 2019/20 Plans and impact. The format will be slightly different this year with lesson students doing this programme (60 students) but increasing the percentage of PP students undertaking the day. Impact will be measured by survey. Intervention: Mental wellbeing and confidence Ernest Trust team building Context: Year 7 PP students have a day of team building and confidence building carrying out various outdoor activities. Covid - this has been postponed in 2020 and is likely to be postponed is 2021 Impact: All students enjoyed the day and were very positive about the experience.
