Exploring Our Construction Books Keith and Caleb have shown such an interest within construction, cars and trucks over the past few weeks, today they were very excited to see and explore our new con- struction area. Firstly exploring the safety hats and vests, then all the different sized trucks. Lastly they explored our new construction books. Taking a seat and choosing a book the boys got comfortable reading, their friends soon followed coming over to explore the books too. What can you see? Miss Sharnee asked the children. “Its Thomas Sharnee!” Said Keith as he pointed to the train. “”Truck” Said Tobias and Caleb. The Elephants explored and investigated each illustration as they turned page by page verbally communicating what they could see and recognize. Keith then requested for Miss Sharnee to read a book to him and Alexis. Reading and exploring books was a great way to spark the Elephants imaginations and stimulate curiosity. While also helping to develop the ability to focus, concentrate, build on their social and communication skills.
Stop Sign Collage This morning to extend on our construction theme Miss Tenneile organized to do a stop sign collage. During this experience the children were able to use the red glue and then add some red materials of their choice the stop sign. First up was Evelyn and Cienna, Evelyn showed great concentration as she used her right hand and held the paint brush in a palmer grip, when Evelyn was happy with where she had placed the paint she then selected some of the red materials. While Cienna was doing her collage she confidently select- ed the paint brush with her left hand an held the paint brush with a palmer grip but also a little bit of a pincer grip also. After Cienna and Evelyn had fin- ished doing their collage Alexis and Meghan came over to the table to have a turn of creating the stop sign. Alexis was happy to paint the stop sign red, as Alexis was painting the sign she went over each letter very carefully and tried her hardest to keep the paint in the lines. Meghan showed great confi- dence as she painted the stop sign and then moved on to selecting some red materials to place on her collage. Soon it was Harlow and Tobias turn they were both happy to take their time and slowly create their stop signs. Har- low was happy with just painting her stop sign red, while Tobias showed great interest in adding the red materials to his creation.
Building With The Magnets After we had finished our inside activities Miss Tenneile brought down to the room some of the large magnet shapes. When Miss Tenneile placed them onto the table Evelyn, Har- low, Keith and Caleb all came over to the table to see what Miss Tenneile had set up. Miss Tenneile then mentioned to the Elephants that we could do some construction with the magnets. Evelyn could not wait to started building she gath- ered all the red squares and started to stack them on top of each other, Miss Tayla soon asked Evelyn what she was mak- ing Evelyn replied “I’m making a tower”. Keith and Caleb both showed great interest in exploring the magnets, Keith start- ed to place the squares around the outside of another square. Harlow, Meghan and Tobias all showed great interest in exploring the magnets and building a variety of different things with the magnets.
Washing our cars In the spirit of our construction themed activities, we decided to incorporate a little water play with a carwash. Putting together two of the elephants favourite things made for a fun experience. Miss Sharnee set up the big black tough tray outside with some water, bubble bath and lots of cars. The children were able to drive their cars through the water and cover them in soap. “Broom Broom” Tobias said as he drove his car around in big cir- cles. Meghan and Harlow flipped theirs upside down, covering the top in bubbles. Evelyn, Keith and Caleb scooped water up with their hands and poured it over their cars to cover them with soapy water. The elephants then began rubbing their hands to- gether as if they were washing them, showing that they could identify the link between washing their hands and washing the cars. The elephants had such an exciting time today while washing their cars, we plan to build on this with a truck wash during the rest of the week.
