FEBRUARY 2019 DYNAMIC DUO Photo courtesy of YP Country Times We were thrilled to see another great turnout for our Australia Day breakfast, a time to recognise and honour some high flyers of our area, the sort of people that make Maitland a rich, vibrant and welcoming place to live, work and retire. This year we had 2 very worthy winners - Clive Kelly & Tim Tuck. We thank everyone who attended the breakfast to recognise the contribution of these citizens to our community. Clive Kelly has made a very significant contribution to the area. He has been a leader in getting the community onside to get things done and built. Lasting monuments to his persuasive powers include the Area School Sports Stadium, the Airstrip, the Heart of Maitland, the Clydesdale statue, and the Maitland Health Centre. He has been involved in many sporting clubs and committees, almost too many to mention. The list includes the Port Victoria Football Club, Mid Yorke Peninsula Tennis Association, Port Victoria Golf Club, Urania Tennis Club, Urania Church , South Kilkerran Agricultural Bureau, Bi-Centenary Celebrations Port Victoria , 50 years since last Windjammer at Port Victoria, Maitland Area School Governing Council for 13 years – Chairperson for 5 years, Maitland Area School Stadium Committee, Central Yorke Peninsula Council Councillor for 10 years, Initial Maitland Airstrip Committee, Heart of Maitland Project and the Clydesdale Statue.
Clive is actively involved in the Rotary Club of Maitland which he joined in 2002. He was President in 2012/2013. Clive was presented with the Paul Harris Fellowship Award in 2015, the highest award in Rotary. Being a Member, player, Life Member, twice President and other committee roles of the Maitland Bowls Club, Clive is frequently seen up at the bowls club helping with greens and building maintenance. Clive plays a big role at the Maitland Health Centre – being a member and Chairperson. He is currently pursuing additional car parking in the park opposite the Health Centre and played a vital role in the building extension. You can see that if Clive believes in a cause, he is into it, boots and all. Clive is the sort of fellow that you want on your committee because he gets things done, he doesn’t just talk about it. He brings his trademark enthusiasm and energy, and inspires others to support the cause. Tim Tuck is an amazing teacher who relates brilliantly to young people and has been recognised by various honours and awards including a National Excellence in Teaching Award for SA in 2002 , nationally in 2003 and a Regional Arts Award in 2002. Apart from his teaching abilities, he writes musicals for schools (text, music and lyrics) and directs them (often designing and making lighting, backdrops, costumes and props). The last count was 23 musicals in 31 years. An amazing output. These are available online through his business Big Break Productions and are performed by other schools around Australia and overseas. Tim’s work has taken the school music programme to new heights and to the district, including the street, hospital and retirement village. His involvement with the Maitland Music and Arts Club has provided a conduit for talented children to perform at a higher level. He is a Life Member of the Music Club and has been heavily involved throughout his time in Maitland initially onstage but also in committee work, musical and stage direction. Latterly Tim has served in the orchestra for major productions. His nomination for Maitland Citizen of the year was accompanied by a petition of signatures, indicating the high esteem in which he is held. To quote one of his nominees. “Tim is an awesome mentor to the children and their parents, so supportive of anything and everything pertaining to an enriched educational environment. Music, science, fundraising, extracurricular activities…he contributes to them all. You are a wonder Mr Tuck and we would like to acknowledge this with a nomination for Maitland’s Citizen of the Year.” Thanks to Tim and Clive and all the other contributors to this community who make Maitland a great place to live, and hopefully inspire others to make their contribution.
We were lucky enough to have local Sarah Francis talk about her recent trip overseas to compete in the New York Marathon. She entertained the room while explaining the process involved just to get your name chosen to compete in the race. On Sunday November 4th 2018, she ran with approx 53,000 other people and couldn't believe the amount of support she was given from compete strangers. With 2 million people lining the streets to watch and cheer, she described the atmosphere as unbelievable. Sarah spoke of her training schedules and how on one of her long runs a random farm dog joined her for 17 kms. She really gave a positive message that you don’t need to be the best or the fastest but its about putting your mind to something and giving it your all. Anything is possible. A big thankyou to The Maitland Lions Club who once again fed the masses. You work so hard to get all of the food cooked and served on time. It’s a big job and we really are grateful that you keep putting your hand up to help us out. THANK YOU MAITLAND LIONS CLUB

Shayla McKay Soccer Captain In Fiji In December, 15 year old Shayla McKay of Maitland participated in the SA U15 girls Soccer team in Fiji in the Ultimate Fiji Cup, playing at an international level against Fiji and other islands. On her first day arriving in Fiji she was selected Captain of the SA U15s. She was overwhelmed and felt privileged and honoured in her captaincy role. She was responsible for ensuring her team stayed well hydrated through the heat and humidity and was involved in Captain/coaching meetings. Overall the team successfully came 3rd at the end of the Ultimate Fiji Cup. A great achievement. This once-in-a-life-time experience would not have happened without the overwhelming support from the local Maitland Community she lives in who got behind her and financially supported her for her Fiji trip and everything she was required to take. It is with deepest sincere thanks and appreciation to the local Maitland business’, service clubs, community groups, MPs, Council and community individuals who have all kindly donated financial support to enable Shayla to go to Fiji. It is with great pride and appreciation to everyone who has helped make this dream happen and we wish to publically thank each and everyone for the gracious generosity and support given. Words cannot express just how grateful Shayla is to be living in such a caring and supportive community. Thank you all from the bottom of her heart. Thanks also to Andrea Tucker for the hard work put in for the fundraising.
From January, 2019, Yorke Peninsula Community Transport will manage the Community Visitor’s Scheme. Previously this programme has been provided by the Copper Coast Council but following an approach from Council and a successful grant, all existing clients, volunteers and staff will transition across to Yorke Peninsula Community Transport. The Community Visitors Scheme provides volunteers to visit older people who are socially isolated and whose quality of life would be improved by friendship and companionship. Visits can occur in the client’s own home or at residential facilities. The CVS is available to those who have been identified as at risk of isolation or loneliness. Recipients must receive a home care package or a government subsidised residential aged care service. We are actively looking for new people willing to volunteer as a visitor, throughout all areas of the Peninsula or for older people who may enjoy this regular company. We also continue to provide transport for clients throughout Yorke Peninsula and beyond. We have a fantastic group of volunteers who give up their time to drive people to appointments, in either our or the client’s own vehicle. This service is available to anyone and for almost any reason – ie: medical appointments, funerals, shopping, social calls etc. Our service also offers the following… YP Community Bus - return trips to Kadina (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) - return trips from Yorketown via Minlaton/ Pt Vincent/ Stansbury/ Wool Bay/ Coobowie/ Edithburgh (twice a day on Thursdays) - return trips from Corny Point and Marion Bay via Minlaton and Yorketown (First Tuesday of the month) Health Bus -return trips from Yorketown via Copper Coast (picking up along the way) to Adelaide for medical appointments (Monday- Friday) Copper Coast Dial a Ride -transport between Moonta, Wallaroo and Kadina (Wednesday and Fridays) Out’n’About Bus -transport to organised outings available from the Copper Coast or Lower YP visiting places such as markets, shopping centres, Bunnings and Virginia Nursery. For further information on any of our services, please contact us on 1300 132 932.

Getting Engaged in the Maitland Show Why do we hold the Maitland Show? It is a traditional show; this year it is 141 years old. It is proudly one of the longest running shows in South Australia. There will be entertainment, sideshows, trade sites, food venues and horses in action, personality awards and much more. We welcome the sponsorship from local businesses, the Federal Member of Parliament and the backing from the local council. However, the show over the past few years has seen declining numbers. The challenge we have this year as organisers is that we want to make it an event that you want to go to! Many may say that it is boring and there is not a lot to do, but that’s missing the point; the Maitland Show is your show, it is the social fabric of your town and towns around it on the Yorke Peninsula. It is about bringing everyone together, bringing communities together, it is about engaging the next generation. We need to invest in our children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, we need to challenge them to enter into a competition. We need mums, dads, grandma’s and grandpa’s entering into competitions as well, why not make it a family challenge? So how do you make a Genoa Cake and be eligible to compete in the state final to be held at the Royal Adelaide Show 2019? Can you enter scones, muffins or sausage rolls, can men enter in the cookery section? What about that outstanding pot plant or the beautiful bloom in your garden, could it win a blue ribbon? Crafts such as knitting, crochet, needlework, scrapbooking, card making, metalwork and woodwork are done for mental and physical relaxation; benefit the show by entering your work. Photographs hold an instant of time, of emotion, a memory; share those experiences in the photography competition. Maybe the children’s section, junior art contests, models and structures and technology studies will inspire you! On www.maitlandshowsociety.com.au you will find information for exhibitors and competitors, entry forms for exhibitors, trade site booking forms, the horse program and entry form. Or you can find the 2019 Maitland Show Book distributed around local businesses and schools in Maitland, Minlaton, Kadina, Ardrossan, Black Point, Moonta, Port Vincent and Pine Point. Why not spread the word to friends and families who live in the cityscape to drive up on Show Day. This is what the Maitland Show is all about creating, demonstrating, participating and celebrating. Rather than contemplate or speculate about the lack of things to do at YOUR Show, start by entering one thing and then go and see YOUR or YOUR friend’s competition entry on Saturday, March 16, 2019.

We are not top of the Bowls Ladder but are trying our best and hanging in there. We have had to do a lot of work on our two greens, especially ‘B’ green which had a problem but thanks to Geoff and his fellow workers we now have two greens in great condition with the Champion of Champions of NYPBA Men and Ladies Singles and Pairs to be held at Maitland in March and April 2019. Congratulations to our Life Member, Clive Kelly, who received the Maitland Citizen of the Year Award on Australia Day. Well done Clive and well deserved. Our AGM is to be held on Thursday 14 April. Fire and Emergency Services (Miscellaneous) Amendment Bill Following on from valuable discussions with local farmers and CFS officers last week in Kadina with the Hon. Corey Wingard MP, Minister for Emergency Services, I am pleased regional hearings have been scheduled as part of the review underway by the Select Committee on the Fire and Emergency Services (Miscellaneous) Bill. A hearing has been scheduled in Balaklava on 7 February, providing opportunity for locals to give oral presentations to the Select Committee. Written submissions are set to close on 1 February. In Kadina, Minister Wingard heard valuable direct feedback from farmers and CFS personnel who already run a very effective Harvest Code of Practice and SMS alert text messaging system that is well supported by the farming community. The group had an open discussion about the implications of proposed new legal powers for CFS officers to direct farmers to stop harvesting in certain weather conditions, and how such a system may logistically work. There was discussion around enforcement, funding support, weather data systems and existing communication procedures, and the need for alert systems to continue to be farmer-run. After the meeting, the Minister said districts across the state can learn much from how systems are working on Yorke Peninsula, describing the local system operators as “leaders nationally in what they’re doing.” He also stated that it is clear we all want the same outcome – “that is, preventing fires before they start, and a way to stop the very few people who are doing the wrong thing when 99.9% are already acting responsibly.” I encourage anyone interested to speak at the hearing at Balaklava on 7 February, as your voice will be important. To lodge your interest contact the Committee’s Parliamentary Officer on 08 8237 9223, email scfesbill.assenbly@parliament.sa.gov.au or visit my website: www.fraserellis.com.au. Have Your Say I also recommend a visit to http://haveyoursay.sa.gov.au for the opportunity to participate in various important reviews that are now underway to start the new year. Topics include *how we can improve school bus services in regional areas; *impacts of single-use plastic products on the environment and potential changes to the Container Deposit Scheme; *proposed changes to the way development applications are lodged and assessed; and *the nomination/voting process for the new Recreational Fishing Advisory Council. Only by working together can great things happen. If I can assist with any State matters, please contact the Maitland electorate office on the contact details below.
