PRESIDENT'S REPORT G’day to all. I hope everyone had a great Christmas break - I surely did. Plenty of quality fish around to keep us all happy and the weather wasn’t too bad overall. Lots happening on the club scene, with preparations for this year’s Tuna Comp in full swing. Let’s hope for another cracking week of weather so it is open slather for everyone to give it their best. By all reports, presentation day went off very well with good numbers in attendance. It was great to see the pictures of all our life members together. Thanks to Baa Baa and Vicki for once again making the salads to go with the very well cooked roast by Geoff McKinnon. Congratulations to all trophy winners from last season. Thankyou to our outgoing committee members in Eamonn Carey, Glen Sparks and Chris Lethlean, and welcome to new members Liam McKinnon, Lochie Charlton and Richard Hately. We now have quite a few of the younger fellas on board, so it is nice to know our club will be in good hands for many years to come. Tom Egan has kindly put his hand up to be our secretary and Bummer has volunteered as treasurer, so thanks to both of you also. Most of you would be aware of the new rule the GFAA has passed regarding backing line. If you don’t know, it would be a good idea to have a read of the rule on the GFAA website to get up to speed. Many fishers don’t agree with the change, but it has been done. Once again, we have had quite a few records from our members for the year, so congratulations to all of you and thanks again to Bummer for making sure the claims are correct before sending them in. We already have a few good nominations for the ANAL Fin award for the year, so if anyone sees or hears anything please let a committee member in on it as we don’t want to pass an opportunity to take the mickey out of those involved. That’s about it for now, so I will see you all on the water. Cheers Hoody 2 | SOUTHERN YARDARM - MARCH 2018

TREASURER'S REPORT Hello to all new and existing members of PMOAC. Just a quick note to let you know that I have taken over as Treasurer for 2018 due to the retirement of Chris Lethlelan, whom we thank very much for his past efforts in this role and on the committee. Unfortunately, we have had some issues with paying on our internet / website of new and renewed memberships for which I appoligise, but fingers crossed all is sorted now.’ I have attached some screen shots below of what you will see on the site when you go to renew your membership and hopefully clear up some misconceptions. You must fill in the fields marked with a red * before you will be allowed to move to the next screen (This is important information we require for our records and your safety along with the fact we now send text and email updates to our members regarding upcoming events / competitions etc). Once required fields are completed you will be asked to confirm your details. If all details are correctly entered click on confirm The next screen that will appear is Proceed to Payment and this is where some confusion begins. Click proceed to payment and the next page (below) appears where you have two options. (Please note you do not require a PayPal account to proceed). Option 1: If you do have a PayPal account, log in with your email address and then password as per normal. Option 2 (visa / credit card payment): Scroll down under the log in drop box (blue) to pay with a card. Click on this and you will be taken to the PayPal guest page where you enter your visa/card details etc and then click pay now and all is done. I hope this explains things a makes life easier for all. Please note that membership expires 30 december each year so are due again. It would be great if everyone could resubscribe prior to 30th march 2018 as after this date membership ceases if unfinancial. Also on another note with the tuna comp creeping up on us we will be putting entry forms up on our new look website shortly bringing back The Early Bird Discount so keep an eye out for that. RECORDS OFFICER'S REPORT Thanks to all that showed up for our end of year trophy / roast day. Well done to all concerned in organising a great meal and an entertaining day. From my side it was a pleasure to hand out quite a few state / Australian and even some world record certificates for the 2017 year. Well done to: • Zarli Sanders: SBT 13.42kg on 6kg a state and Australian record • Shane Sanders: Mako shark 195.70kg on 4kg a state / Australian and world record • Bernadette Pedler: Tope 30.56kg a state / Australian and world record • Tracey Tito: Eagle Ray 18.96kg on 3kg a state and Australian record • Tracey Tito: Gummy Shark 30.28kg on 4kg a state and Australian record As a club we continue to impress with such captures with PMOAC quite prominent in the gfaa records book.Skippers please don’t hesitate to contact me in regard to anything with record claims to make life easier for you but be aware of rules and regulations as they change from time to time. All rules are in the GFAA booklet that all members are sent once financial members with a really helpful section on requirements when applying for a record either state / Australian or world inc what pictures / data is required . Well another year begins and we are off to a flyer with the initial run of tuna getting everyone excited. We already have two junior members applications in pending for records for tuna: • Sam Whan with an SBT going 27.76kg on 8kg a small fry male state and Australian pending record • Zac Currie with an SBT 29.28kg on 15kg a junior male state pending record Well that’s it for me for a month as I am off to the Carribean to see my daughter married and soak up some sun. Any record enquiries during this time, please ring Andrew Hood or Mark Whan. Tight lines, Craig Medhurst Above: Zac Currie with his pending State Record SBT on 15kg line. 5 | SOUTHERN YARDARM - MARCH 2018
WEIGH MASTER'S REPORT Hello to everyone! I think I going to change my working hours, work weekends and have my weekend through the middle of the week, how crazy has the weather been this summer? Anyway, hope it gets better soon. The comp scene has a bit hot and cold lately but that's been mainly due to the weather, with the February Comp with only three fish brought to the scales and the March 11 comp only seeing one snapper. It was really nice to see so many members turn up to a disappointing weigh-in for a barbecue, a few drinks and a bit of fun, which we are going to continue for most of the weigh-ins, so hope to see a few more there for the next one. Also, just a reminder that memerships are now due and the grace period finishes the end of this month. It is not nice to have to ask if comp entrants are financial members, so get paid up as soon as possible. This process has now become much easier with the new website up and running - all you have to do is follow the prompts! There is one thing I have noticed this year. I find it interesting to hear about the amount of just undersized mulloway that are around. There are so many between 70 and 80cm and it is seeming very hard to find that sized fish. There has been a tagging program this year by the Nature Glenelg Trust, looking at the movement of the mulloway around the Glenelg River estuary. I’ve only just found out about this myself, but if anyone is interested you can find read the article in this edition of the Yardarm, or find out more at, www.nature Glenelg.org.au. Above: Sonia Hermann with a Danger Point Mulloway. It would have been nice to tag the few we have caught this year ourselves. Anyway, that’s enough from me. Tight lines and see you at the scales Geoff McKinnon 6 | SOUTHERN YARDARM - MARCH 2018
JUNIOR COORDINATOR'S REPORT Howdy All Well another season is over and presentations are done and dusted! Congrats to the major trophy winners in Sambo as junior champion, Jordy as tag champion and Zac, runner-up champion. It was awesome to see the monthly and species trophies spread among nearly all the juniors. Special mentions must go to Zarli Sanders on her record Mako and Georgia Barrett, who was lucky enough to take out the Bob Oliver SAGFA most meritorious game fish for the state. When I say luck possibly more skill than luck - this young lady fishes 4kg line better than most fellas I know … especially this fella! We have lost one of our juniors at the end of the season, with young Jordy Carrison moving up to mix it with the senior anglers. Good on ya mate, sure it won’t be long before you’re back winning a few trophies! Not wanting to steal Bummer’s thunder, the kids have already been at it. Zac Currie snagged himself a pending state record tuna on 15kg and Sam Whan, a pending state and Australian record tuna on 8kg before the end of Above: Georgia Barrett with a nice deep water Gummy Shark. January. Well done boys, let’s keep our fingers crossed that they pass so we can celebrate with a sars and coke! A special thanks to Tommy Egan who ran the kids comp through the Christmas period. Unfortunately work prevents me from being around much at that time of the year, so Tommy’s efforts are appreciated not only by me but all those that supported it. I am sure this event will get bigger and better every year, especially if we can get the weather to play the game. It’s awesome to be sitting on the committee alongside some of the juniors I used to look after. These fellas have come with some fresh ideas, enthusiasm, brought in some much-needed computer and technical skills and even dragged a mate in as well, so please show your support to Brock, Leeroy and Tuna. These guys are the future of our club and proof of how important looking after our kids and taking them fishing it is … as Ba ba would say “it’s in our constitution … if ya bothered to read it!”. Tuna comp will be here before we know it, so please jump online and renew your membership and while you’re at it, take advantage of the early bird entry discount that can only be accessed if you enter online. We will be running a wood raffle at the comp again to support our junior program, so when you see the kids rattling the tin please come and say howdy and throw them a couple of bucks. Cheers Whanny 7 | SOUTHERN YARDARM - MARCH 2018

GFAA NOW ON SOCIAL MEDIA Hi Everyone This email is to invite you all to like and follow our new Instagram and Facebook pages,“GFAA”. They have been established in an effort to promote our Junior and Smallfry anglers, their efforts fishing on the water, their stories and their incredible achievements. I have engaged the services of some young ladies from each State, all are either current or past Junior Tournament competitors and all have been State Winners and some National winners. They are to assist me with the administration and running of the pages and we encourage as many as possible to like our pages and follow us through this incredibly journey. The aim of establishing the pages is to give our anglers a forum where their successes can be recorded and shared readably amongst fellow competitors and friends. It also provides us with an opportunity to promote the GFAA National Junior Tournament to encourage future sponsors to support this great competition. We also wish to promote Tournaments and request Clubs provide info where we can upload posts in an effort to encourage Juniors and Smallfry anglers to participate. Any anglers also fishing overseas are encouraged to share their successes for everyone to see. We also plan to include posts of newsworthy items on local and state events that have involved our young anglers. Please support our Junior anglers, they are the future of our great sport. ANGERS URGED TO LOOK OUT FOR TAGGED MULLOWAY The Nature Glenelg Trust is urging anglers to be on the lookout for tagged mulloway, following the beginning of a new tagging project which got underway across Victoria late last year. The project is funded by the Victorian Fisheries Authority through Recreational Fishing License Fees (RFL) and will run for the next three years. Aquatic Ecologist, Dr Lauren Veale, said the project aims to tag 2,000 mulloway over the next two years to investigate broad-scale movement patterns across Victoria and potentially interstate. “Understanding the connectivity and movement patterns of mulloway between estuarine nursery habitats and marine waters is particularly essential to interpreting population structures and obtaining a more complete picture of the species life history,” she said. “While the project is Victoria funded, tagging mulloway just over the border near Port MacDonnell is considered important, since spawning is likely to take place in these areas and may provide sources of recruitment for western Victorian mulloway stocks.” Ms Neale said results from January 2018 showed 101 fish had been tagged, with 39 in the Port MacDonnell area, mostly around Danger Point and Browns Bay (see graph below). Mulloway tagged “We’ve already we’ve seen one fish recaptured, although no growth or movement was observed in the short time it was out (please see certificate on next page). Hopefully we’ll see a few more in the coming months,” Dr Veale said. If you catch a tagged mulloway, please record the recapture details by contacting the phone number/email on the tag. Each angler will receive a certificate (see next page) with information about the recaptured fish, including how far it’s grown and the extent of its movement. Together we can learn more about the movement patterns of this iconic species. Continued next page 15 | SOUTHERN YARDARM - MARCH 2018
ANGERS URGED TO LOOK OUT FOR TAGGED MULLOWAY continued Anglers that catch mulloway without external tags, are being reminded to consider keeping the frames and donating them to Nature Glenelg Trust. With the frames, scientists collect key information on the age, sex and reproductive condition of the fish which contributes to better biological knowledge and improved species management. While the project is Victoria funded, some mulloway are likely to be found along the coastal beaches of South East South Australia (SA). This is in light of recent genetic analyses undertaken by Nature Glenelg Trust, which revealed that mulloway in Victoria (as far east as Westernport Bay) are part of the same subpopulation or breeding stock as those from the Coorong in South East SA. While it is known significant breeding occurs near the mouth of the Coorong, scientists at Nature Glenelg Trust are hoping to determine the extent of any localised breeding occurring along the Victorian coast. To get involved, please contact Aquatic Ecologist Dr Lauren Veale at the Nature Glenelg Trust via email lauren.veale@ngt.org.au, or phone 0439 034 390. BIG FELLA FISHING ADVENTURES: The first catch A fisherman’s tale by Brock, Liam and crew. “Big Fella” was purchased in December 2015 by myself (Brock) and my brother Liam it appealed to us knowing it would be a good seaworthy sea vessel and a great project. The boat has a history within the Port Mac Donnell region, it started off as a professional Abalone Vessel, then a Professional Crayfish boat. After its professional career Pete and Tony Bell – Life Member of PMOAC purchased “Big Fella” for pleasure and recreational fishing. The day of the barrel busters comp - also the first trip for the Big Fella! Late 2016 we started our project, we gutted the boat from top to bottom removing the motors and all electronics, stripping the whole hull. We removed the rails, installed new windows, fitting a kill tank and installed a door on the starboard side. Once all the aluminium work had been done the whole boat was sandblasted and ready for a brand-new look. We decided to sticker wrap with lots of thought put into the design we wanted, we finally come up with a look that suited the boat and give the “Big Fella” a whole new appearance. After the new trailer was built, electronics rewired, motors, seats, and fuel tank refitted it was time to give it test run. After a short trip beyond the breakwater we decided that there were a few minor things that needed attention. Above, left: The Big Fella at Dalkar Engineering having side windows fabricated. Right: Before the new sticker wrap. Continued next page 18 | SOUTHERN YARDARM - MARCH 2018
BIG FELLA FISHING ADVENTURES: The first catch Finally, the “Big Fella” hit the water in search to put blood on the deck, it just so happened to be the Saturday of the barrel busters comp held by the PMOAC. With a keen crew being myself, Liam and mate Lachie Charlton we woke early Saturday morning and made a rush for the gear and hooked the boat to the Ute and took off to the ramp. We got to the ramp to find that the sea was not a great as we thought and as we could see big swell rolling through the shortcut we wondered if it was worth the trip. An hour later we heard through the radio that a bite was on, a local charter boat had hooked up! We made the call that we couldn’t miss the bite and back down the ramp we went and put the Big Fella in. As we turned the end of the breakwater we were hit with three metre swell and chop to make us wet as a shag. The Big Fella punched through and not long after we were where the last barrel was hooked up. The lures hit the water and we were trolling for no longer than half an hour before the Tiagra 50W went screaming off the outrigger. Myself and Lachie rushed to the deck to get the rods in and the riggers up whilst Liam carefully set the drag on the fish. We all looked at each other and made note of the 50W with a quarter of 24Kg line left on the reel and thought it was a good idea that we chase what we are confident was a barrel SBT. After we fought the fish for over 2 hours and only managing to see colour once during this time, Liam was feeling the hurt form the estimated 100Kg plus SBT but powered through for another 45 minutes and at this time it was when Liam had gotten the better of the beast and up to the surface it came. Above: At the weigh-in where the tuna pulled the scales to 127.90kg Continued next page 19 | SOUTHERN YARDARM - MARCH 2018
BIG FELLA FISHING ADVENTURES: The first catch I manoeuvred the Big Fella up alongside the tuna and Lachie got a hand to the leader and persuaded it to the side of the boat where at this stage Liam and brock had both sunk gaffs into the fish and Lachie had tail roped the fish to the boat. Liam opened the door and it took all three of us to drag it onto the deck. A sigh of relief and excitement was shared amongst us as we couldn’t believe what we have just achieved. After the duration of the fight a quick check of the time saw that the weigh in was not far away. We set sale for the ramp, bells and whistles on with the Big Fellas best feature, a 9-inch sub and sound system, what a trip! We pulled up at the weigh in and a crowd of 30 – 40 people waited on as the winch was used to move the big fish from the Big Fella. On the scales the fish went 127.90Kg the biggest for the day which also won the comp. What a first trip for the Big Fella and crew! Hopefully many more trips just like this one to come. To keep in touch with our trips shoot over to our Facebook page and like “Big Fella Fishing Adventures”. We are regularly uploading photos and videos of our activities whether we are on the water or in the shed. Regards Brock, Liam and crew. ANAL FIN NOMINATIONS NOMINATION 1. This particular member had just spent the day on the water with one of our local charter operators and proceeded to the tow vehicle to pull the boat from the water. He jumped in the bus and tried to start it but couldn’t get the ignition to turn at all. Several minutes later the skipper wondered what the hell was going on so tied the boat off and went to investigate. The so called driver was still attempting to start the bus when the skipper arrived. The driver couldn’t even get the key in the ignition so the skipper suggested he try the correct key instead. Amazing how quickly it then started. Good work DINGO PRATT! NOMINATION 2. One of more senior members was lucky enough to purchase a new outboard just recently. The test run was arranged and the boat was backed down the ramp into the drink. It was soon discovered that the boat didn’t want to come off the trailer easily, but it eventually did after a lot of revs were applied. The skipper decided the new motor must have the wrong pitch prop on it. The test run went very well and returned to the ramp. After getting home, numerous phone calls were made to the supplier telling them about their stuff up. They didn’t agree. Turns out the skipper only had to grease the rollers on his trailer and all problems were solved. Good one GARRY CLARKE! Nomination 3. Well one of our regulars has been at it again. Taking advantage of a long weekend and the Bayside Festival, a local charter operator thought he would park his vessel on the foreshore hooked up to the tow vehicle for a bit of free advertising … but how to get back home? So the push bike was deployed into the back of the ute. Leaving the scene, he was spotted by his Little Bru (Sam Whan) who was at the skate park testing out his new bike he had just gotten for his birthday. Over the charter operator goes to have a chat with little Bru, who is very persuasive in talking his fishing buddy into having a go over and down the spine of the skate ramp. Straight up it went … then straight down, handle bars crossed up and arse over tit. Bent forks, stuffed handle bars and broken pedals, but pride still intact, hopped up like a true warrior and off he went. TONY BELL you will never learn! ANAL FIN NOMINATIONS continued Nomination 4. This bloke decided to go for a quick dive to get a few crays and keep in good with the in-laws. Was a bit choppy but alright so headed out only to discover he had issues with his buoyancy vest that kept filling with air bringing him to the surface. After bobbing around the top like a cork this was sorted and the nominee found themselves on the bottom for the search to begin. After a short period he found the honey hole, a ledge loaded to the brim with big crays. After prying the first big fella out he went to put the cray in the catch bag … oops, what catch bag? After thinking about sticking the cray down the front of his wetsuit and grabbing another common sense prevailed and he decided to hold it between his legs while he grabbed another, now that’s dedication. After grabbing another cray from under the reef and prying the cray he already had that decided to make his crotch its new home it was time to go home with a cray in each hand. Hope ya mother in-law enjoyed her crays Eamon Carey! Nomination 5. Now this bloke is becoming another regular, but fair dinkum LES LAWLOR! If you don’t want to go back-to-back, you shouldn’t leave your bait in the back of the ute on your way surf fishing if you don’t want your hungry dog to eat it Hope you didn’t let him sleep on your swag! Nomination 6. Now with the Commonwealth Games just around the corner it must have inspired our next bloke to do some early morning training on the way home from the pub at 3am. Last seen on the oval at Allendale flying through the hurdle track with the agility of a wounded albatross. Such dedication that after half an hours sleep got up to help out the Remarkable crew bring their pots home for the season. TOCCA you are a legend! 28 | SOUTHERN YARDARM - MARCH 2018

FISHING NEWS FROM THE TOMPIN-PEKAN TIOMAN ISLAND 2018 FISHING SEASON For anyone thinking of doing a trip on the Sailfish. The first Sailfish been caught already and the Tenggiri (Narrow barred Spanish Mackerel) action is red hot right now! New departure point for Sailfish fishing day trips for the 2018 season: Departure from Pekan town to the Rompin Sailfish areas. www.malaysia-fishing.com/pekan-sailfish-fishing-32381410 Kuala Rompin is already famous for its world class Sailfish fishing. Not many anglers know about the Sailfish action South-east of the small town of Pekan north of Kuala Rompin. The best Sailfish areas we normally fish out of Rompin (around Palau Berhala and the banks south and south east of Berhala island) are located closer to Pekan town than from Rompin. Pekan is located 35km south of Kuantan Town, the capital of Pahang state and 78km north of Rompin. The advantage of departing from Pekan compared with Kuala Rompin, is that the Sailfish fishing areas is closer to Pekan than from Kuala Rompin (you get more fishing time at the prime Sailfish areas with a Pekan departure). It's also much easier to travel to Pekan compared to Kuala Rompin from overseas as there are daily flights to Kuantan airport (35km north of Pekan) from both Singapore and from Kuala Lumpur. There are also many daily air-con busses departing from the Kuala Lumpur bus terminal, to Kuantan and hotels in Pekan and Kuantan are better and lower priced than in Rompin. The daily fishing charter rate (private charter) for a 10 hour trip for max 4 anglers is 695 USD in Pekan compared with 860USD in Rompin.
