Also, up for grabs were the Don Hills trophy for the angler with the most IGFA points, this was taken out by Danielle Taylor. The Crosland Shield for the most meritorious catch went to Darnell Van der Werf, the McCracken Farm trophy for the heaviest Snapper went to Wyatt Johnstone with a catch of 7.75kg. WHAKATANE HUNTING & FISHING ONEBASE TOURNAMENT 2020 THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS ■ Whakatane Hunting & Fishing ■ Williams & Wilshier Contacting ■ DB Export 33 ■ Haddocks Spraypainters & Panelbeaters ■ Landmark Homes Whakatane ■ Shimano NZ ■ New Zealand Fishing News ■ Air Chathams ■ Greenwoods Fishing Adventures Norfolk Island This years OneBase tournament was run over the 24th, 25th and 26th of January in near perfect conditions. We had a massive increase in entrants this year with 103 boats and 314 anglers entering the tournament. With a total prize pool worth over $115,000.00 including a fishing safari to Norfolk Island for four it was not surprising that this year’s edition of our OneBase was so popular. This was the first year that Whakatane Hunting & Fishing came onboard as the naming rights sponsor to complement their other commitments to our club. This relationship is very strong and we continue to build on this moving forward with this partnership. Hardcase Story The 2020 OneBase had a few rule changes including the option to stay away which has proven to be very popular Shimano have been great supporters of our club for many amongst those competing. A real focus on this year’s years. This year the team from Shimano decided to bring their tournament was to continue the move towards measure and new boat down and spend the weekend showing us how it’s release fishing and this was very productive especially in the done. An expectation that seemed reasonable… Kingfish section. The team off Sea-K can attest to this taking One of the team members, AJ, is a young fulla and until out the top three prizes in a masterful display of Kingfish OneBase hadn’t managed to land his first game fish despite angling over the three days of competition. being a very capable angler in his own right. The other big change was in the Marlin section where the This was the year AJ was going to break the spell and with the main prize was allocated to the heaviest Striped Marlin. This recent run on Yellowfin things should be looking promising gave more anglers the opportunity to be involved in this to do just that. He had the support of some great teammates section and again, was met with a lot of enthusiasm from our who had loads of experience and would surely help AJ realise anglers. This was eventually taken out by one of our top junior his dream? anglers Marley Orr when he weighed in a 113.4kg Striped Marlin. Day two dawned. Mint, this was the day. AJ was pumped although these three-day tournaments are a measure of The other notable catch of the tournament came in the endurance as much as anything and poor old AJ was feeling Snapper measure and release section where the wily old dog the pinch, just a bit. Get a good morning in chasing Yellowfin Joe Anderson off Joe’s Boat measured a horse of a snapper then, a bite to eat then maybe a little lie down while the boys at 103cm! Joes boat eventually scooped the snapper section keep an eye on his line. Sounds like a plan AJ. taking out the top five placings in this section. The boys from Shimano are nothing if not disciplined, AJ had Overall, it was a fantastic tournament supported by some a plan and he was sticking it. As planned after a morning amazing sponsors and anglers, the committee have a great without any luck AJ had his lunch then curled up in the cabin foundation from which to build this tournament into the for a well-earned nap. “Give me the nod boys if my reel lights future. The 2021 OneBase will kick off on the 18th of March up and I’ll be back in a flash” Gee AJ didn’t want to miss out and this should see even better catches! on his first game fish just because he needed a break. Cannot Wait!! AJ drifted off to sleep happy in the knowledge he had some of the best and trustworthy team mates on board to look after him… - 20 -
AJ was in a deep sleep when……. The familiar scream of the Tiagra came rushing into the cabin! Could it be? AJ woke immediately, stumbled on to the deck. YES! AJ’s reel was going off! AJ had seen heaps of YouTube videos and done loads of reading in preparation for this very moment. He grabbed his rod, took his stance, and started to play the thing. “It’s a donkey boys!” “stoked”. AJ played the thing hard, solid fish. Don’t lift the tip too high, take my time, trust my gear…. Although AJ was a touch weary nothing was going to get between him and this Yellowfin. “solid fish boys! Hasn’t put a run on me yet, just solid! Yeehaa!” Leader! “I can see flashes of kinda white, must be silver and the sunshine…” After a short but epic fight AJ finally gets his catch to the boat. “she should make weight aye boys? Bloody felt like it!” AJ walked over to the side of the Shimano to assess his catch. WHAT! The Shimano crew in unison announced that it was a BUCKET FISH of the Resene Paints variety. Moral of the story? Always sleep with one eye open when your fishing the Whakatane Hunting & Fishing OneBase! Better luck next year AJ. Joe Anderson. WHAKATANE HUNTING & FISHING LADIES TOURNAMENT 2020 THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS ■ Whakatane Hunting & Fishing ■ Ocean Ford ■ Villa Maria ■ Caltex Whakatane ■ SunFM ■ Whakatane Printers ■ Shimano New Zealand ■ Mags & Tyres ■ Davey Painters Whakatane The 2020 edition of the Ladies Tournament kicked off on the 13th of March and concluded on the 15th in fantastic conditions. As it was with every tournament in the 2019/2020 season we saw a massive increase in anglers fishing this tournament from the previous year. 177 anglers went toe to toe to grab their share of the $90,000.00 prize pool. The Ladies were targeting Marlin, Tuna, Kingfish, Snapper, Tarakihi and Trevally. With the exception of the Most Tag & Release Marlin all categories were focused on the heaviest. As with the OneBase, this tournament will move more towards measure and release moving forward and a move in this direction will come into effect in 2021. The 2021 tournament will return to it’s traditional time slot and kick off over Waitangi HEAVIEST TREVALLY weekend, the 5th through to the 7th of February 2021.
