CLAREMONT Wishing you Beautiful Moments, Treasured News Memories, and all the Blessings a Heart can Know! Happy New Year! Happy New Year to all! We are looking forward to our program “Plan It Up!” …. If I Had Only Known… on January 15, 2019, 6:30 p.m. Our presenter, Sandra Hogan, will help us identify and organize crucial information for quick and easy access as we - or our representatives - navigate future circumstances. What might these be? Illness of spouse, accidents, emergencies, natural disasters, death - times of stress and uncertainty. Most of us have basic plans such as wills, trusts, safety deposit boxes, and designated representatives for when we need them. This program, however, goes beyond these to help us with the pesky details that are so obvious we don’t even think about them - and the “devil is in the details!” Just when we are most in need of organization and order to carry on without our “other”, we might struggle to do the simplest household management tasks such as paying our monthly bills because we are not listed on the account. These crucial details and others will be identified for you to put in place for “when that day comes.” This planning is in every way part of preparedness, whether we are a couple or a single. This program was created in response to needs voiced by Claremont residents who found that, despite careful pre-planning, there was much they wished they had only known. Our $15 dues include all monthly programs. Spouses are invited to attend this program. Non-members and guests each pay $5 for presentation. Please sign up in the book at the Main Office. Signup provides you with a copy of the handouts for this program. If you would like a ride to this presentation, please call Bobbie Larson (406-860-2354) or Esther Brynildson (503-596-2982). We will make every effort to accommodate your request. The Events Committee has received so many requests for a repeat performance of the mind reader and superb entertainer who wowed us in 2015! We are so pleased to announce that Mark Stone, The Mentalist, has agreed to return for another performance at Claremont on Thursday night, February 21st. This won’t be a repeat of his last performance. He has an entirely new show for us! Registrations for this exciting event will begin mid-January. Seating will be limited so make your reservations early. Details will be in the Registration Book and in the February newsletter. In addition to the return of The Mentalist in February, the Events Committee is making plans to entertain you throughout 2019! Watch for a Kentucky Derby event in May, the July 4th celebration, and (maybe) a Luau and Pool Party later in the summer and a Casino Party in the fall. Of course, for sure we will have the Veteran’s Day celebra- tion, and the Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties to finish the year in December! As always, the committee welcomes new members, so if you think this sounds like an exciting year of events and would love to help us put them on, come to our monthly meeting at 11:00 a.m. on the second Wednesday of any month in the Garden Room. You have no obligation to join the committee, but you will see that we have lots of fun with the party planning and find us hard to resist! Come take a look!

Proposed new 2019 board members Joyce Adams, Fred Sutherland and Steve Graham were introduced. These new board members will be confirmed by the current board at the January 9, 2019 board meeting. President Shackleton stated that the de-annexation proposal will not proceed since a majority of Greens resi- dents who responded to a survey elected not to move forward. It was reported that 2018 was an overall good year for Greens landscaping. Five trees were removed and re- placed in 2018; three or four more are expected next year. There will be a major wash down this January as all pumps will be pulled and Hillsboro Pumps and Mike’s Electrical will inspect and place new screens in Greens ponds. 2018 financial results project a $3,200 positive bottom line variance at year-end which was used to reduce 2019 assessments. The major outlays in 2018 were: $33,645 for a new Terrace House roof, $27,197 for pump repair/ replacement, and $4,339 to seal coat the Terrace House turnaround. Greens Treasurer Steve Hooker stated that operating and reserve replacement assessments were increased by 2.5 percent and 3 percent respectively, roughly in line with inflation. He noted that prior year assessments were up 9.6 percent and 24 percent respectively. Hooker introduced a resolution that was approved stating that any excess of membership income for the years ended December 31, 2018, 2019 and 2020 would be applied against the subsequent tax year member assessments. House Chair Margaret Barbero outlined the work completed on the Terrace House in 2018: * The oven and microwave were replaced and new shelving built * The private roadways within the Greens were resealed and the parking area restriped * Critter Control removed nests set up by birds in the attic, re-screened air vents under the eaves and blew in new insulation in affected areas * Three fire extinguishers were replaced to meet code * Charter Construction addressed wood rot in the arches and exposed beams of the Terrace House Greens Grounds Committee: Thursday, January 3rd 4:00 p.m. Greens House Committee: Tuesday, January 8th 4:00 p.m. Annual Greens Board Meeting Wednesday, January 9th 3:30 p.m.
BOARD REPORT Here’s wishing all Claremonters a happy and prosperous New Year. Thoughtful governance and management of the affairs of Claremont have led to the adoption of new policies that are necessary for the continued social and economic well-being of our community without sacrificing our community spirit or need to build for the future. One may find some of these changes difficult to understand and appreciate, however, after considerable study by the committees and the CCA Board, new policies were necessary to keep up with the changes of Claremont. Your commitment to keep Claremont a community that thrives and understands the basic values of friendships, respect and personal support for each other is second to none. This is evident when one meets the new property owners and witnesses the warm welcomes and quick assimilation into “our wonderful home”. There is no better place to live. Thank you. The dedication and volunteerism by our fellow residents is without equal in my mind. Serving on the CCA Board and its three sub-associations are eighty plus (80+) committee members, ten (10) committee chairpersons, sixty-plus (60+) Emergency Preparedness Zone Leaders and fifteen (15) Board members as well as twelve (12) employees who make up the major driving force of Claremont. Kudos to those individuals. Also, we should not forget those who help out their neighbors, a fundamental form of volunteerism. The residents have “spoken” recently. The present rule regarding rental properties in Claremont will remain unchanged, however, enforcement will be rigorous. The proposition for de-annexation of the Greens has been dropped. More meetings will be held between CCA and CGA to encourage synergism All committees are performing excellently. The House Committee is planning to restructure the lighting around the clubhouse. The Landscape Committee has hired “Showplace” to maintain the common grounds this year. The Events Committee has all kinds of excitement planned (can they top 2018?). The Golf Committee is doing excep- tionally well thanks to dedication and weather. The Emergency Preparedness Committee continues to grow and in- volve more folks. Communications, Finance, and ARC continue to do “their thing” very well, I might add. All in all, Claremont is in good hands for 2019. Thank you for your continued support, Fred Barden, President THANK YOU CLAREMONT COMMUNIT Y A big thank you to all who helped to make the 2018 Claremont Christmas Party a big success! * Our Events Committee family of volunteers for helping during these past few months of preparation as well on the day of the party. * A special thank you to the Men’ Exercise class for carrying up the tables, coat racks, wine, table linens, and boxes of decorations… and then returning in an hour to set up tables and chairs...and then helping at the close of the evening. * Jan Stewart for the piano music and caroling. * Our bartenders: Jim Gabriel, Dennis Matta, Tom Kreis, Fred Barden, John Fiebiger, Neil Morfitt, Bob Freeman, Phil Myers, Marv & Mary Thompson, Fred Barden, Larry Olson, Cheryl Johnson, Sharon Thomas, Ken LaJoy, Cliff Knudsen and Jack Malloy. * The Dickens Carolers for welcoming us. * Kam & Kam for their expertise in planning and presenting a delicious buffet of hor d'oeuvres and desserts and the beautiful buffet table decor. *And lastly to the 264 residents who signed up to attend! If we missed anyone, please forgive us and accept our “Thank You” and a Happy New Year to all from Co-chairs Sherry Dempsey and Cari Amey

CLAREMONT WOMEN’S GOLF By: Carol Bennett CWGC sponsored the Toy and Joy gathering on December 4th alongside the beautifully decorated tree in Claremont’s Fireside room. Over 50 toys were donated for less advantaged children in our community and were picked up by the Fox12/Les Schwab Toy Drive. The women’s golf club held a happy hour for all women golfers – past, present and future members to support the drive and usher in the holidays. Patti Shaddix, chair of the event committee, thanks Toy & Joy Event Committee: Brónagh Kirwan and Karen McCarthy for assisting her in Brónagh Kirwan, Patti presenting this lovely, successful event. And Patti expresses Shaddix; Chair of the Event, a note of gratitude to the many attendees who helped with Marylyn Russell & Karen set-up and clean up. GOLF COMMITTEE Claremont Golf Club revenues were $36,000 in November, exceeding budget by $16,000. Daily green fees, punch card sales and merchandise sales drove this favorable revenue variance. Year-to-date net income was $51,000, which was $21,000 better than plan. This improvement is due largely to higher daily green fees, annual member passes and power cart rentals throughout the year. The golf course continues to be in excellent shape. The leaves are almost gone, the dying fir tree on hole #2 was removed, and a new blue spruce was planted near the 9th hole green. Work has begun on rebuilding the sand traps. The first one completed was on hole #2. Go ahead and see how much easier it is to get out of that trap now that there’s good sand to work with. If you’ve been out on the course lately, you likely saw Duane’s crew digging a deep hole next to the trap on hole #1. To improve drainage in this trap, a new dry well was needed. Once completed, the crew will start rebuilding the trap on the 3rd hole. The topline results of our Customer Satisfaction Survey fielded in late November to our e-list shows high levels of satisfaction among our golfers – with 62 percent very satisfied and another 34 percent somewhat satisfied. This 96 percent overall satisfaction rating is notably higher than the 91 percent rating in late 2017. Also, our staff was viewed as being more responsive than the prior year, with 83 percent versus 61 percent saying Claremont responds well to their questions and concerns. That is not to suggest there isn’t room for improvement. The Golf Committee just completed a 2019 Business Plan aimed at heightening our golfer experience even more in the year ahead. Several steps will be undertaken in 2019 to address survey feedback: *Sand traps will continue to be rebuilt *A new driving cage will be constructed *More tournaments will be hosted *Marshall training will improve performance of our starter team *Broadened merchandise selection and higher quality equipment (namely, pull carts and rental clubs) will be purchased *Cart paths along par-3 holes and around tee boxes will be paved *A fairway sanding project will be started to improve course drainage *Pace of play and goose poop initiatives will aim to effectively address those areas of concern On this last issue, cheap lasers are being purchased and shared with homeowners and golfers to scare off Canadian geese in hopes of driving them to settle elsewhere. If you are willing to participate in this “goose patrol” effort, please let the staff in the Golf Shop know. Finally, our presence at the Portland Golf Show has proven immensely important to our continued growth in new golfers. To assure our success, we need volunteers to staff our Golf Show booth. Please let Anthony know if you’re game to help us promote Claremont at this February 22nd - 24th event at the Oregon Convention Center. CLAREMONT’S WOMEN’S CLUB FOOD DRIVE There are hungry Oregonians all seasons of the year Claremont Women’s Club thank you Claremont We received many barrels of food during the fall and ask you to please continue to fill the barrel in 2019!!!
