KALEIDO 2020 ON TOUR Message from the Festival Producer Christy Morin, Founder / Executive Director Arts on the Ave Welcome to the 15th year of Kaleido’s beauty, love, magic, The Morin family at Kaleido and community. This year has been a year of celebration of flexibility and creativity. COVID-19 presented a challenge that turned our usual plans inside out and upside down. A humble ice cream truck with its music playing gave us inspiration that we could still bring our festival to the people, and so Kaleido 2020 On Tour – Here Comes the Sun was born. It gave us a unique opportunity to come together and re-invent Kaleido while keeping our mission strong, sharing the arts with our community. Although this year does not have the regular rituals and traditions, it is a celebration of the human spirit. We welcome you to safely enjoy our spontaneous surprises at pocket parks and residential streets throughout the Alberta Avenue District, Friday, September 11 through Sunday, September 13. I have learned through my family roots that “celebration” is a key ingredient in keeping a family strong. Thank you to our artists, volunteers, sponsors, donors, production team, board of directors, and you, our community, for believing and sharing life together to the fullest. A special shout out to our “fearless ringmaster,” Sauvé MacBean for your leadership, flexibility, and creativity this year. A huge heartfelt thank you to each of our production team members—your hard work, courage, and resourcefulness were essential to making this radical re-invention of Kaleido a success. Here Comes the Sun! Christy Morin, Executive Director, Arts on the Ave P.S. It takes many hands, hearts, and dollars to keep us going. Please consider the opportunity to give Arts on the Ave a financial donation on a monthly basis. We are a charity and all donations will receive a tax receipt. Kindly head to our website, www.artsontheave.org, and donate to help us continue celebrating community arts, family and Edmonton, together. WE ARE IN GOOD HANDS; THEREFORE, LET US TAKE CARE OF ONE ANOTHER. – Marcus Borg, quoting Huston Smith’s mother www.artsontheave.org KALEIDO 2020 ON TOUR 3
GREETINGS Message from Honourable Leela Sharon Aheer Minister of Culture, Multlculturalism and Status of Women As Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the re-imagined Kaleido Family Arts Festival. The Kaleido Family Arts Festival has long been a highlight of the summer for families in Edmonton and especially the Alberta Avenue community. I am glad that once again, we will be able to enjoy the wonderful music, dance, and acrobatics of this festival, but this time from slightly farther away. Keep an eye out for when this unique mobile festival will be near your home, and bring your family, neighbours, and friends out for a taste of Kaleido 2020 on Tour: Here Comes the Sun in September. As always, remember to keep yourself and your community healthy by keeping at least two metres apart from people outside your cohort, wearing a mask when physical distancing is not possible, and washing your hands often. Thank you to the staff and volunteers who have worked hard to bring Kaleido back to Alberta Avenue. Your resilience and creativity have always been incredible, and never more so than this year. Best wishes for a great festival! Leela Sharon Aheer Minister 4 KALEIDO 2020 ON TOUR www.kaleidofest.ca
Message from Janis Irwin MLA, Edmonton-Highlands-Norwood On behalf of Alberta NDP Leader Rachel Notley and my NDP Opposition colleagues, welcome to the 15th annual Kaleido Family Arts Festival: Kaleido 2020 On Tour! This year is Kaleido’s crystal anniversary, the fifteenth year that the festival’s incredible organizers, volunteers, and artists have brought our community together here on Treaty 6 territory to exercise our creativity, stretch our imaginations, and have fun! Even better, in order to keep us all safe and strong while still bringing us together, Kaleido has made this summer unforgettable in a wonderful way by surprising us all summer long. This September, from the 11th to the 13th, I couldn’t be happier to see the culmination of all this hard work at Kaleido’s weekend showcase. As we’ve seen, the life that Kaleido brings to our community continues all year long. During a time of great uncertainty and anxiety, the projects and relationships from previous festivals have grown immensely, and I’ve been so proud of the ways our community has come together to support all of our neighbours. I’ve already seen so many great things come from this year’s festival throughout the summer, and I can’t wait to participate in Kaleido 2020! I so appreciate Alberta Avenue residents welcoming us all into their neighbourhood this summer, this weekend, and throughout the year. As always, Kaleido is a fabulous opportunity for us to show our support for Alberta Avenue, Arts on the Ave, and all of the artists who so kindly share their work with us. Thank you so much to the organizers, volunteers, artists, and all those who’ve played a role in bringing us together for another Kaleido Fest. The challenges you’ve faced this year have been exceptional, but you’ve responded with courageous creativity! Your hard work continues to keep our community vibrant and strong. Happy Kaleido, friends! For 15 years, the Kaleido Family Arts Festival has enlivened and excited the historic Alberta Avenue neighbourhood. This year, Kaleido on Tour has helped Edmontonians celebrate while staying safe and healthy, all summer long. This creative new way to enjoy the festival demonstrates the creativity and community that the Alberta Avenue area is so well known for. I thank the many organizers, volunteers and sponsors who worked to make this year’s event a success, even in these unprecedented times. Your efforts bring light and hope to our community, and help to ensure Edmonton’s arts and cultural scene continues to thrive. Best wishes for a memorable event! ABOUT KALEIDO ON TOUR Arts on the Ave presents: Kaleido 2020 ON TOUR Arts on the Ave is pleased to present Kaleido 2020 on Tour – Here Comes the Sun. This year’s theme is to bring light and joy to the community at a time when many of the activities we love are being put on pause due to COVID-19. To help keep everyone safe and physically distanced, Kaleido has been radically re-invented and transformed into a spontaneous, moving festival. Instead of just one weekend, performances and activities will be spread throughout August, leading up to the Kaleido showcase weekend in September. Taking place from September 11–13, 2020, the Kaleido showcase weekend will feature a variety of music, dance, and street performances. Travelling on flatbed trailers, performers will show up at a location where everyone can safely watch and enjoy, perform for a limited time, and drive away. Spontaneity is an exciting component to Kaleido this year and we encourage everyone to follow our social feeds for announcements on where we’re moving next. The tour route is top secret, but we will be dropping names of pocket parks that we’ll be passing by. The show must roll on! KaleidoFest.ca | @KaleidoFestival artsontheave.org | info@artsontheave.org Volunteer Powered Kaleido is powered by hundreds of volunteers from the Alberta Avenue District and beyond. We count on the tireless efforts of our volunteers to keep the arts and the community thriving on the Ave. We thank you from the bottom of our Kaleido-filled hearts! 8 KALEIDO 2020 ON TOUR www.kaleidofest.ca

Bill invites a small group of fellow performers from the folk, blues, and bluegrass communities (usually 5 or 6) to get together at The Carrot Community Arts Coffeehouse, Thursday’s from 10:30 AM until about 1:00 PM.
