For regular readers, you will be aware of Gary Day’s summer look back to programmes issued by Wessex League clubs in its inaugural season. 5. HAVANT TOWN Booklet: A Review of Non-League Programmes in Hampshire 1986-7 by Peter Lynn: “Andy Stonebridge helped the club produce an attractive, glossy, 8-page pre-printed shell, but use of this shell then varied erratically with inserts being 4, 6 or 8 pages, using a variety of printing methods and numerous layout styles. Some issues were neatly typed with club notes, articles on the opposition, reports on all four of the club’s sides, along with results and a league table, whereas others had just a page of notes, the teams, and future fixtures. The method of assembly with pages badly folded and staples off-centre or absent altogether.” Saturday, 18 May 2019 18/19 Edition #48 Page 6 of 22
SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS My comments: Mine was a decent effort. Shame it didn’t include a league table. Still, it did have a ‘funny’ to share, as follows: “OBITUARY. It is with sincere regret that George, our Doorman, lost one of his moths when he opened his purse on Tuesday evening. It flew out of the door into the bitter cold night, and alas passed away in the cold. We are so sorry George. The last time he opened his purse was last summer and the weather was warmer, so the moth survived.” My programme was a league game against Eastleigh on Saturday, 21st February, 1987. Havant Town won 5- 0 with goals from Tim Morris (2,73 and 84), Stuart McIntyre (35) and Dave Harden (72). Havant had a female physio, which was an unusual occurrence back then, and the TV cameras followed her onto the pitch when she had to come on to treat a player! The referee allowed the camera crew to go and do their filming too! The Havant line-up was: 1 Trevor Gilbert; 2 Simon Elley; 3 Steve Watt; 4 Martin Sorrell; 5 Gary Blaylock; 6 Tim Morris; 7 Brian Burnett; 8 Stuart McIntyre; 9 Peter Ellis; 10 Trevor Plumbley; 11 Dave Harden. Sub: Don Smith (appeared) 6. HORNDEAN Peter Lynn’s comments were: “A simple A4 sheet folded in half inside a 4-page pre- printed glossy cover, of which 1½ pages are blank. The insert merely has the team line-ups and a few lines of notes from the secretary, with no mention of results or league tables. Free with admission.” My comments: The above was a fair assessment. The cover is attractive and flatters to deceive a bit. It’s interesting that the Deans secretary Trevor Brock continues to fulfil a secretarial role but now at Havant & Waterlooville. He would always sign off his programme notes advising of a future match and ending with “See you there”. Having visited Havant & Waterlooville for the first time for a while last season, I have to say it was great to see Trevor there and still putting in unstinting service to local football. My programme was for a league game against Steyning Town on Monday, 16th February, 1987. Deans won 1-0 due to a seventh minute goal by Steve Williams. The Horndean line-up was: 1 Mark Cannell; 2 Ian Sheppard; 3 Marc Saunders; 4 Steve Stuchbury; 5 Dave Musselwhite; 6 Steve Brown; 7 Steve Williams; 8 Paul Lewsley; 9 Colin Ball; 10 Norman Lockie; 11 John Anderson. The substitute was Paul Spinks (used). Next up: Lymington Town and Newport. Oh yes, the answer to last week’s issue where Eastleigh FC’s Wessex League map was shown and contained a mistake. Did you spot it? Well, folk down Lymington way might have done as the road should have been the A337 but instead the A377 was shown which is somewhere down in South Devon! The Wessex League catchment area did extend to Sussex in this season but South Devon would certainly have been a tad too far! Saturday, 18 May 2019 18/19 Edition #48 Page 7 of 22

These players will not be registered by the Competition until the Monday following the second Saturday in May. All this will depend on the “Whole Game System” allowing early registrations for next season. At present the suggestion to clubs is therefore to get the forms signed as per rules and wait. Any changes to this procedure will be advised. CLUB NEWS Following up from last week, Hamble Club have appointed Graham Castle as their new First Team Manager. He can count several years’ experience under his belt as has been the Academy Scout Co-ordinator for Chelsea in Hampshire. Another managerial change sees Danny Dolan stepping down from the hot seat at Tadley Calleva having taken them to their highest league finish after eight successful seasons at Barlows Park. We were sorry to hear last week of the passing of former Southampton and Portsmouth player, Jon Gittens aged 55. He was manager/coach at Team Solent for two seasons (from the start in 2005 until 2007). Whilst with the club, honours won included being champions of the Southampton League Junior Division 1 2005/06 (going through the season unbeaten), the Hampshire Junior 'A' Cup winners 2005/06 and the Southampton Junior 'A' Cup winners 2005/06 followed up with the Southampton League Senior Division 1 title the next season. He certainly made a great contribution to Team Solent's rapid progress in the first two seasons laying the platform to where they are today. Prior to his spell at with the University side, he was at Fareham Town where he took the Creeksiders to the Hampshire Senior Cup Final in 2005, and later moved to Blackfield & Langley to be their manager in the summer of 2007 and helped see them achieve promotion into the Premier Division. He was also the League Development Officer for a short while in 2011/12 and was highly thought of across the game. Sincere condolences go to his family and friends. Condolences are also extended to Andover New Street the former Chairman there, Dale Mason, also sadly passed away last week. Saturday, 18 May 2019 18/19 Edition #48 Page 13 of 22
SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS Out west, the recent Portland United Awards evening saw Jamie Symes pick up all three Senior awards, Managers’ Player, Players’ Player and Supporters’ Player. Matt Casey collected the Managers’ Player and Players’ Player of the Season at last week’s Awards evening at Brockenhurst, other awards saw James Thomson pick up the Badgers’ Golden Boot, Leon Carbayo- Borges was the Young Player of the Year and Ronan Moore won the supporters’ accolades. Pictured here courtesy of the club, he receives his Award from special guest Ian Baird. Will Tickle, Matt Casey, Ronan Moore, Joe Chamberlain and Tommy Barnes also received their Loyalty shields for playing 100 matches for the team. As an aside the club made some £450 which will be added to proceeds of the upcoming New Forest Cup for Oakhaven Hospice. Further east, the AFC Portchester Awards evening saw Steve Ramsey collect the Managers Player of the Year award as well as the Supporters’ nomination. There’s a new face at Amesbury Town where Stuart Lindsay has been added behind the scenes, he’ll be there to co-manage the team with Player Manager Jack Vallis. Crossing the Solent we hear that the plans to redevelop the Newport IOW site at St George’s Park has been agreed by the council, with talk of a possible hotel and more food outlet space, such work would help our member club in their relocation proposals- to a new facility near the Racecourse roundabout. Last Sunday there was a good turn-out at Bashley for the first ever Keith Hill Cup. Over forty players were named on the team sheets and they shared six goals before the “Old Boys” team won on a penalty shoot- out. Over £1000 was raised for the two cancer charities, well done to all involved. AFC Stoneham have said farewell to Sergio Caballero as he returns to Spain with partner Roccio and baby Enzo. He was with the club for four seasons playing nearly 150 games and scoring 54 goals of which 31 were this season, with 18 of those in League games. Benny Read has moved on from Horndean signing on for near neighbours Havant & Waterlooville. There’s a new Joint Manager at Christchurch where Wayne Smith has linked up with Ollie Cherrett at Hurn Bridge, meanwhile just down the road, Hamworthy United have raided Ben Sullivan’s former side with goalkeeper Sam Jones and midfielders Harry Cooper and Marcus Cullen leaving Bournemouth and signing on for the Hammers. Also leaving Victoria Park is River Smith the striker has gone to Dorchester Town. Rae Hughes who was with Bemerton Heath Harlequins until the latter stages of last season has linked up with Nick Ward and the management team at Shaftesbury. Behind the scenes at Whitchurch United they have appointed a new Secretary; Peter Flint is the newcomer- with some experience in local Derbyshire football- welcome to the Sydenhams Wessex Peter. At the Bypass Ground, Romsey Town have appointed Chris McGinn as their new Head of Football and 1st Team Manager. SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS PROGRAMME COMPETITION 2018/19 Programme Competition rules from Newsletter #16 To answer some of the questions as regards the 2018/19 Programme Awards, it was really disappointing to receive such a small number of entrants despite requests being made in a number of the weekly Newsletters- 10, 16 and 37 to name three- there were several entries who just sent in one programme from the early part of the season and then never did follow up with the second or third. Likewise a couple of teams entered a programme from a non-Competition game, thereby not being included in the process. It is somewhat difficult to make a decision when only one programme is sent in to review. NEXT season perhaps more clubs will join in and get a better picture across the League as a whole, in the meantime congratulations for Portland United in the Premier Division and Romsey Town in Division One for their efforts. 2019/20 will see the Competition run again- so for clarity, each club should send to the Newsletter Editor (Mike Robins, 7 Wesley Road, Poole, BH12 3BE), one copy of either a League or League Cup match for August or September to reach him by 30 September, one copy of either a League or League Cup match from December or January to reach him by 1 February and , one copy of either a League or League Cup match in March or April to reach him by 27 April. Programmes from other competitions will not be judged. Elsewhere, and whilst I am not sure of the qualifications required in this competition, I believe it used to be one copy of one game, not necessarily sent in by the club- the “Soccer Club Swap Shop” awards for this season have also been seen, and it’s congratulations to Andover New Street who were chosen as the best in our Premier Division from the ten entrants- Fareham Town, Baffins Milton Rovers, AFC Stoneham, AFC Porchester (sic), Bournemouth, Hamble Club, Shaftsbury (sic), Andover New Street, Brockenhurst and Sholing. At time of writing the Andover New Street edition is joint 22nd with Sholing’s joint 27th in the top forty of close to 590 entries. Seemingly no award has been made for Division One at time of writing where “four” issues were received by the organiser[s]- United Services Portsmouth, Romsey Town, Fleet Spurs (!) and Petersfield Town. SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS BEEN, SEEN AND (MOSTLY) ENJOYED. The sunshine of last August seems a long time ago now but that was when my season started after having avoided all pre-season friendlies. Friendlies serve an undeniable purpose for Clubs, players and especially Managers but, possibly the last week before the start of the season apart, not for spectators. Too hot (usually), too many substitutes and frequently team line ups that bear no relation to those fielded once the season starts. So, the first Saturday of the Season proper and a trip to BASHLEY to see Andover New Street enter the brand- new world, to them, of the Premier Division. It was hot and sunny and the ground was hard and the visitors started as their season was to go on to a large extent, losing two nil to a side who were sharper in front of goal. Always nice to go to Bashley and a very enjoyable afternoon. Two days later and the Premier Division again with the meeting at Test Park of TEAM SOLENT and Lymington Town. regrettably this has not remained in the memory to any great extent other than the fact that two proven goal scorers in the League – Jesse Waller-Lassen and Mike Gosney - put their names on the score sheet in the one all draw. Twenty-four hours later and the shorter journey to TADLEY CALLEVA who, like New Street, were starting their first ever season at Premier Division level. They had secured three points on the opening Saturday and doubled their tally with a three-goal win over Bemerton who were poor on the evening at the start of what was to be a poor season for them overall. Brett Denham, for a long time a scourge of Division One defences, quickly adapted to the step up with two of the goals. The second Saturday, the FA Cup, and a cross country journey to HORNDEAN to see Godalming from the Combined Counties League. Having lived in the Town for many years prior to returning to Hampshire, their results are always followed but sadly they had suffered relegation at the end of the previous season and were no match for the home side. The first goal came in the opening couple of minutes before Liam Kimber scored a hat trick in the five nil victory which could easily have been greater. Much nearer home on Monday with the locally eagerly awaited meeting between WHITCHURCH and Andover Town following the latter’s decision to opt for relegation rather than promotion. Town had got off to the worse possible start to the season with a mauling at the hands of AFC Stoneham, but this evening was to in many ways encapsulate their campaign. They battled hard and conceded just the one goal, the only goal of the game, and perhaps deserved a draw on the night but they could never produce these performances with any degree of consistency. A decent attendance of one hundred and thirty-six present. For the second week running it was two games within twenty-four hours with a slightly shorter journey than Horndean, but still cross country, to PETERSFIELD. The home side were still rejoicing in an FA Cup win a couple of days earlier and were victorious again in a game that ended with a touch of controversy. The home side were one ahead at the break and in the second half both sides introduced substitutes who scored with virtually their first touch. With five minutes left the Rams added a third after they were allowed to continue despite what looked to all to be a very poor challenge that won them the ball on the edge of the area. The referee thought otherwise, three one it was and the remaining minutes were somewhat on the fractious side. A break from the Sydenhams League with BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY’s opening fixture in the Southern League next on the agenda. In truth it was not a very good game on a windy afternoon and hard pitch on the Waterside but Liam Robinson’s penalty gave the home side victory over Slimbridge, though it is doubtful if any there that afternoon envisaged their table topping position at the end of the season. Two days later and the ten minute drive to WHITCHURCH for a one nil victory over Totton & Eling about which anything is difficult to recall. The home side ultimately enjoyed a better second half to the season while the visitors struggled throughout. The following evening and a third visit to the delightfully named Combined Counties side EVERSLEY & CALIFORNIA who play on the outskirts of Yateley. Happily, the ground was located with far less difficulty than on the two previous visits and it was an enjoyable evening in the sunshine at a friendly and welcoming Club. The visitors in the Hampshire Senior Cup were Andover New Street who progressed to the next round of the Competition courtesy of the odd goal in three victory and a superb strike from Shane Lock. Four days on and a rare Friday night game with ALTON the hosts and Whitchurch the visitors for a Division One fixture. In direct contrast to Tuesday it was a foul night in terms of the weather with almost incessant Saturday, 18 May 2019 18/19 Edition #48 Page 18 of 22
SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS rain prior to kick off and a damp evening but the game was marred by a poor refereeing display and a loss of discipline by the home side in the closing stages. Memory suggests that Alton scored first before the visitors took the lead and were three one ahead at the break. Early in the second half what looked no more than an innocuous collision between two players saw a red card for the Alton defender and the remainder of the game played in an atmosphere where every decision was contested and with the referee declining to talk to players a surfeit of yellow cards. Hopefully all will have learned. Still in Division One the following day when ANDOVER TOWN displayed their lack of consistency when losing three nil at home to Verwood in what was a stroll in the sunshine for the visitors with Andover never in the game. Bank Holiday Monday and, as is usual on such occasions, the lack of Sydenhams League football meant the Southern League and the short haul to THATCHAM. The visitors, Fleet Town, were already in some disarray after a late decision by the League to move them from the Central to the South Division had seen the departure of the manager and some players, and Thatcham’s six nil victory was as easy as it sounds. Two more games – three in as many days – completed the month with both on the local front. Firstly, TADLEY continued their fine start to the season by becoming the first side to defeat Sholing as Brett Denham’s goal took them in to the next round of the League Cup and spoilt Dave Diaper’s 900th game in charge of the Boatmen before ANDOVER NEW STREET exited the same Competition after being beaten three one at home by Division One Downton. The Wiltshire side scored three times in the ten minutes leading up to half time and if the first was more than a little offside it in no way detracts from their victory. Fourteen games seen in a busy month! THE FA VASE AT SQUARE ONE The FA Vase Competition has been in existence since Season 1974/75 and is highly popular with Clubs and spectators alike, providing as it does the opportunity to play and or visit Clubs outside the confines of the Sydenhams League (though one Club Secretary did volunteer the information two or three seasons ago that they did not enter because the players did not like travelling!). The other problem that cannot be resolved, though it is not as prevalent now as in the past, is the number of matches in the early rounds in which Clubs meet other Clubs from the same League. To a certain extent it cannot be avoided but there is a theory that the FA are very wary of too many Clubs from one League reaching the latter stages. However, that is digressing and the object of this is to look at the inaugural Competition and see how “our” Clubs performed – “our” because this was ten or more years before the advent of the Wessex League and ground grading may have had a say in the relatively few Clubs from the area that took part. Round One was regionalised and Moneyfields (then with the suffix “Sports”) made the short trip along the coast to Chichester and defeated Portfield five four in something of a goal fest while another tie that involved very little travel saw Gosport Borough win two nil at Portsmouth Royal Navy. In two Hampshire versus Berkshire ties Brockenhurst scored the only goal of the game against Newbury Town at Grigg Lane and Cowes defeated Hungerford by the odd goal in three at Westwood Park after sharing four goals on the mainland. On to Round Two and having won in Chichester, Moneyfields entertained Chichester City and scored three times without reply. Cowes and Brockenhurst were drawn together with the New Forest side winning three one on the Island whilst Gosport travelled to Salisbury and scored six against Bemerton Athletic who were subsequently to merge with Moon FC and Bemerton Boys to form Bemerton Heath Harlequins as we know them today. Elsewhere Farnborough won three nil at near neighbours Farnham Town and Fleet went down five nil at Bracknell. Local representation was reduced by fifty per cent in Round Three as Farnborough scored the only goal of the game at home to Moneyfields and Brockenhurst beat Gosport three nil at home after a one all draw at Privett Park. Round Four represented the last thirty two and Brockenhurst hosted Cadbury Heath from Bristol, a Club who currently seem to be regular opponents for Sydenham sides in the FA Cup and Vase, and carried the flag a round further with a two one victory while Farnborough won four three at Clanfield – the one in Oxfordshire rather than the Club on the A3 north of Portsmouth. Brockenhurst’s fine run ended in the last sixteen with a Saturday, 18 May 2019 18/19 Edition #48 Page 19 of 22
SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS four one home defeat by Stamford from Lincolnshire but Farnborough won at Kempston Rovers before losing to the eventual winners, Hoddesdon Town, in the quarter final. Given that this was over forty years ago many of the competing Clubs may well be no longer in existence and there are names that would test even the knowledge and memory of our Team Solent reporter – knowledge that often improves and corrects these pieces – such as Stork, Frecheville Community, Glenside Hospital, Chloride Recreation (which sounds like a cryptic crossword clue for a swimming pool) and Viney St. Swithins. The last named are based near Lydney in Gloucestershire, lost six nil in Round Two and never entered the Competition again. They still compete in Gloucestershire football and had a game postponed last season for a reason probably never recorded in the annals of our League. Apparently, the goal nets were put up on the Friday evening and overnight a deer got tangled in same and its attempts to free itself ripped the net to shreds – and no replacement (net, not deer) was available. One more Club competed that season that certainly has not competed for many years since – Annan Athletic. Those with a passing knowledge of geography and football will know that they currently play in the Scottish Division Two and are involved in the season end play-offs as this is written. Annan is only about seven miles from Gretna Green and originally played in the local Dumfries League. When that folded, they affiliated to the Cumberland FA and joined the Carlisle League and entered the Vase. After some six years south of the border they returned to Scotland and have climbed the Scottish version of the Pyramid. Amazing what crops up when basically researching the Wessex League. Now the draw for next season’s Vase is awaited with interest. SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS WHEN THE WESSEX LEAGUE JOINED THE FA CUP The FA Cup has been in being slightly longer than the Wessex League but the two joined forces, so to speak, in 1986-87 when the League was formed. There were seventeen Clubs in that inaugural season but for a number of reasons – perhaps ground grading, non-qualification, numbers or just a reluctance to enter – only nine Clubs were in the proverbial FA hat for the draw for the Qualifying Rounds. Then, as now, to make progress in the Competition was difficult as Steps Five and Six are among the lowest levels competing, and whilst the First Round Proper is the dream, the Third Qualifying Round is often the major stumbling block. Five of the nine were included in the Preliminary Round with two progressing and three going out at the first time of asking. Havant drew one all at home to Western League Radstock Town before scoring the only goal of the game in the replay in Somerset and Brockenhurst also overcame Western League opposition with a two nil home defeat of Westbury. On the debit side Sholing Sports lost to the only goal of the game at Southern League Andover, Steyning Town went down by a similar score to Ashford Town (Kent), who finished the season as runners up in the Southern League South, and Horndean acquitted themselves well in only losing by the odd goal in five to Woking. So, nine reduced to six for the 1st Qualifying Round but a largely commendable outcome with Brockenhurst the only losers going down two one at home to Havant. RS Southampton, better known as Road Sea, defeated Sussex League Littlehampton Town seven one and AFC Totton were successful against Western League Calne Town by the slightly lesser margin of one goal to nil. Eastleigh also had Sussex based opposition in Lewes and after a one all draw at Ten Acres they won the replay by two goals to one while Newport had a slightly shorter journey to Gosport. Two goals were shared at Privett Park with the second game finishing three two in the Islanders favour. The 2nd Qualifying Round again saw one tie between Wessex League Clubs with AFC Totton beating Havant one nil at Testwood Park after a one all draw. Road Sea headed for Wiltshire and returned home with a two- nil victory over Western League Devizes but no such joy for Eastleigh who lost one nil at home to Southern League Premier Crawley Town. The FA’s famed knowledge of geography was in evidence even then with Newport enduring a 250-mile round trip to Sheppey in Kent. A one all draw bought the tie back to Church Litten and a single goal saw the Wessex League side through to the next round. On to the Third Qualifying Round which, as it has on countless occasions in the following thirty years, proved the end of the road as regards the Wessex League’s representation. Road Sea went down three nil at home to Fareham, then in the Southern League. AFC Totton held Wimborne to a goalless draw at home but lost one nil in the replay and Newport were two nil losers at Southwick on the Sussex coast. The number of Wessex/Sydenhams League Clubs competing has increased over the years but obviously the Wembley Arch will always be nothing more than a dream. The First Round proper is more realistic but still remains something of a dream – hopefully someone, somewhere will soon turn that dream at least into reality, perhaps that will be this coming season. PRE-SEASON FRIENDLIES Please contact us so we can promote your games and advise of clubs from elsewhere looking for similar. Don’t forget the home team also has to obtain sanction from their County FA before playing. Pre-season fixtures and tournaments are listed in good faith, but please note the League have no control over the proposed schedules. Please check nearer the time if making a special journey. We hear that the New Forest Cup will be contested again this July. The Final is pencilled in for the last Saturday that month, with the semi-finals in the midweek prior. More details when available. Details for the four team tournament involving Tadley Calleva, Ascot United, Badshot Lea and Binfield are also in the pipeline. Saturday, 18 May 2019 18/19 Edition #48 Page 21 of 22
