I HAVE HAD A GREAT TIME PUTTING TOGETHER A CLASSIC SHAW FESTIVAL SEASON FOR 2019. I could afford to be bold in my choices, because of the incredible Ensemble here: I have worked all over the world, but I have never been blessed with such a strong group of actors. They can dance; they can sing; they are great comedians; they can break your heart. Most of all, they are masters of language. And they need to be. Just look at the plays we have coming up: Man and Superman, Cyrano de Bergerac and The Glass Menagerie are among the great masterpieces of world theatre; plays like Mae West’s Sex and Howard Barker’s Victory may be less well-known, but they demand equal brilliance from their actors; while Patrick Hamilton’s murder thriller Rope and Shaw’s razor-sharp comedy Getting Married will showcase the expertise of an Ensemble steeped in the Shaw period. Many of our plays are set in the past but we are also building the audience of the future. So if you know a young person who’d like to experience the magic of theatre (or who loved our hugely popular The Magician’s Nephew) bring them to the next in our Narnia series, The Horse and His Boy. Or bring everyone you know to Brigadoon, the all-time classic musical that has it all: tears and laughter, ravishing tunes and stunning dancing. A trip to Niagara is worth lingering over. Why not combine a matinee with our lunchtime show, . The Russian Play, a one-act tragicomedy by Hannah Moscovitch, or make a whole day of it with Man and Superman with Don Juan in Hell? Don’t miss the chance to watch this epic play in its entirety – with a special farm-to-table meal break in the middle. We feed your spirit and your stomach here in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Finally, while it may seem a long way off, don’t miss your chance to get the seats you want for Holiday Inn and A Christmas Carol. Several performances of the classic holiday offering featuring Scrooge are already sold-out this year; my guess is that Holiday Inn will be the same. Book now and smile at your friends as they scramble for tickets next November. See you soon! Tim Carroll Artistic Director 1
FESTIVAL THEATRE THE HORSE AND HIS BOY By C.S. Lewis Adapted for the stage by Anna Chatterton Directed by Christine Brubaker April 6 – July 21 WORLD PREMIERE. Whisk your family off to Narnia in this mesmerizing story about four runaways — a boy, a girl and their horses — who find themselves called upon to rescue Narnia. Lewis. To complete an unforgettable experience, a pre-show workshop lets your family make the magic that happens on stage. Based on one of the best-loved British films of all time (featuring Alec Guinness), this comedy tour-de-force is set in post-World War II London where five oddball crooks pose as an amateur string quintet in order to rent a room from a little old lady. It is supposed to be the nerve centre for their greatest ever heist, but things soon start to get complicated. Two college students in 1920s London commit murder and host a party for the victim’s friends with his hidden body as the centerpiece … just to see if they can pull it off. GETTING MARRIED By Bernard Shaw Directed by Tanja Jacobs May 10 – October 13 Edith and Cecil were supposed to tie the knot. But a pamphlet has arrived warning them of the dangers of getting married. So now they’ve called it off, sending their entire family into a frenzied, fireworks-filled debate about marriage, society’s best-loved institution: is it, in fact, anything more than a con? This timeless comedy shows Bernard Royal George Theatre Shaw at his wittiest, willing to ask the questions that, even now, we would rather ignore – while Sponsored by still making us laugh our socks off. 6
THE RUSSIAN PLAY LUNCHTIME ONE-ACT By Hannah Moscovitch Directed by Diana Donnelly June 8 – October 12 A small-town flower girl falls for a gravedigger in Stalinist Russia. What can go wrong? Mature content. CYRANO DE BERGERAC By Edmond Rostand Translated and adapted for the stage by Kate Hennig Directed by Chris Abraham July 27 – October 20 Cyrano de Bergerac is a swashbuckling 17th century swordsman who can do anything … except tell Roxane, the woman he loves, how he feels. He’s just too self-conscious about his unusually large nose. Roxane is in love with words, so when Cyrano is offered the chance to ghostwrite love letters to her from an inarticulate, love-struck cadet, he takes it — but can he ever reveal himself? THE GLASS MENAGERIE By Tennessee Williams Directed by László Bérczes May 22 – October 12 In his autobiographical masterpiece, Tennessee Williams recalls growing up in the Depression-era Midwest with his shy sister and their overbearing mother. A gentleman caller seems to offer the chance of a new life – perhaps for all of them. But can we ever truly escape the life we have been given? And what would it cost? This quiet hurricane of desire and longing is widely considered one of the greatest American plays of all time. Production Sponsor James F. Brown SEX A Comedy Drama By Mae West Directed by Peter Hinton June 21 – October 13 Mae West created for herself the role of Margy LaMont, a quick-witted, sharp-tongued prostitute in Roaring Twenties Montreal who is looking for a better life. When she meets a rich and ardent young lover, she seems to have hit the jackpot. The trouble is, he doesn’t know the truth about her. Can she keep her secret? Should she? Funny and frank, this comic drama got its author locked up for “corrupting the morals of youth.” VICTORY By Howard Barker Directed by Tim Carroll July 14 – October 12 Brutal and brilliant, this controversial play by Howard Barker is set in the aftermath of Charles II’s Restoration on the throne of England. The central character is Mrs Bradshaw, a 17th century widow fighting to give her puritan husband a proper burial — but to achieve this, she must take on a world where base instincts are rampant and language is wielded as a weapon. How much of her own human dignity is she willing to risk? Powerful and challenging, this play may enrage you, but it won’t leave you. Warning: Victory is deliberately offensive. It is not for . the squeamish and contains very strong language. 9
