INTRODUCTION Join me on a journey. Each day as you wake up, you are on a journey. None of us can perfectly predict where the path may go, but we can anticipate the joy that awaits. This advent year, I want you to anticipate the joy set before you in glory, given by the gift of the Risen Savior. I’m not sure what kind of year you’ve had, but I do know this; you need to daily reminders of the hope found in Jesus. I want us journey together, counting down the days in which we celebrate the birth of our Living Hope, Christ Jesus. 2021 may have had its unfair share of difficulties and pain, but remember there is always hope. Our Savior came and He will return. Embrace the excitement of living on this side of heaven, with eternal hope. I’m reminded of the words of one of my favorite advent hymns penned by Charles Wesley in 1744. Come, thou long expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; from our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in thee. Israel’s strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art; dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart. Come, let us journey together. 1
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 1 What is Your True Treasure? Matthew 6:19-21 We all must come to understand what motivates our lives on this earth. Are you living each day with the journey toward what is temporary, or are you pursuing what is eternal? As the first day of December is now in existence, are you prepared for the battle of treasures? Will you make this advent all about YOU…or all about HIM? Today, I want you to examine your heart and determine what is your treasure. Take a moment and read today’s scripture. In the greatest sermon ever preached, Jesus shared the importance of storing up treasures in heaven. He illustrated the truth with identifying the enemy, the thief. You and I are prone to disappointments as we journey through this life. If you aren’t careful, you can find yourself storing up treasures on earth. Your plans or ambitions may fail, and hopelessness begins to deceive your heart. Your team lost or your job promotion didn’t happen. You may or may not get what you wanted for Christmas. The list can go on with what can classify as treasures on earth. What would you put on that list? Friend, be reminded on this journey of hope of what truly matters; Jesus has given you the inheritance of the kingdom! You can look forward to each sunrise because the treasure of Jesus is invincible. The thief cannot steal or disappoint that joy. The wear and tear of life cannot take away that living hope. Living for and trusting in Jesus on this side of heaven is the true treasure. He is all satisfying, all sufficient, and all powerful. As you journey through advent with me, please check your heart each day. Will you treasure Jesus above all? Will you live and aim for what is eternal? Will you make advent all about…HIM? Today, pray for your heart to be prepared for the journey. Identify what you would classify as your treasures on this earth. Be courageous and willing to place Jesus as the greatest treasure of your life. I assure you…you won’t regret it! 3
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECE M BE R 2 Jesus Gives Abundant Life John 10:10 Today’s passage has always been one of my favorites. I don’t think I have ever met someone who refused to want an abundant life. How would you define abundant? Take a few moments and meditate on John 10:10. It would assist your understanding and joy if you read the previous verses in the chapter. In the original language of this text, abundant can also translate, “beyond measure.” What does it mean to have a life beyond measure? If your journey is like mine, there are roadblocks and unforeseen detours. Like yesterday, Jesus gave a warning about the thief. The goal for the thief is to steal, kill, and destroy. That goal remains the same today. You might find your life in a complete mess right now. Perhaps you are dreading the holidays, because of deep pain or anguish in your soul. As you look to Jesus, you are given BOTH eternal life AND abundant life. Your life is beyond measure, because in Christ, it is more than just your journey on this side of heaven. The abundant life is not a life free of pain or suffering. It is not a life of promised prosperity or fame. It is a life of Christ-centered hope and peace, regardless of what pitiable effort the thief makes. It is a life beyond measure. This advent season, rejoice in these three words from John 10:10; I HAVE COME. He came to save us and to give us abundant life. Today, pray for protection against the thief. Pray for your journey of hope. Pray you will grasp the true meaning of having an abundant life. 4
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 3 You Belong to a Family! Galatians 4:5-7 Each of us carry a different family dynamic. Those dynamics are most noticeable during the holiday season. Newlyweds are determining which side of the family to visit, while grandparents are making sure they have all the grandkids’ gifts in the correct wrapping. Some families rejoice while others struggle through the season. I’m not sure what your family dynamic looks like this season, but I’m confident of this; you belong to an amazing family! In the grace of Jesus, you have not only been saved, but also adopted into the family of God…forever. Take a moment and read Galatians 4:5-7. C.S. Lewis once said, “The Son of God became man to enable men to become sons of God.” When Christ Jesus was born in a manger, it was to fulfill the story of redemption. The Father sent the Son, so that you and I can be adopted into His family. When His Spirit transforms your life, you are moved from being a slave to sin to becoming an heir to the kingdom. Regardless of your earthly family dynamic this advent, rejoice in belonging to the family of God! Before you are finished reading, I want to challenge you. Can you identify someone that will spend the holiday season alone? Is there someone in your church family/work/neighborhood that has no family? This advent season take the opportunity to extend an invitation for someone to be part of your family. It is a great way to shine the light of Jesus and remind someone of the family in which they eternally belong, the family of God. Place today in the care of the most blessed Savior. See Him as the greatest treasure you have ever received this side of heaven. You can live today with hope, because in Jesus…you are eternally blessed. You are forgiven, loved, and welcomed into the family of God forever. Rejoice. Today, think about your family. How can you invest this advent season into their lives? Pray and connect with someone that has no family…or no healthy family dynamic. Rejoice, for you belong to the family of God! 5
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 4 Sing with Joy Psalm 71:23 If you have been inside a mall or store, you have definitely heard Christmas music. With the invention of Spotify and YouTube, Christmas music is widely broadcasted like never before. Time does not allow us to sit down and have a conversation over the greatest Christmas song ever written (I do have my answer). Yet, as a Christ follower, you have every reason to sing and sing loudly! Christ Jesus was born in a manger, to fulfill the promise of the Father for your redemption. He came. Those two words should be sown on the tapestry of your heart. I love Christmas music. In fact, as I’m writing this today, I’m listening to Christmas music (It is October as I write). I love the peace of knowing the joy of Christ Jesus, orchestrated through songs that have stood the test of time. Yes, there are goofy songs out there about reindeer running over grandma or romance Christmas songs. Choose songs with rich Gospel content. Sing, for you have a reason to rejoice. He came. He will come again. For Christ is born of Mary, And gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wondering love. O morning stars, together Proclaim the holy birth! And praises sing to God the King, And peace to men on earth (Phillips Brooks, 1868). Today, sing to the Lord. Rejoice in the advent, that Christ Jesus came! Either in your car or in your home, sing to the One that saved and satisfied your soul. 6
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 5 Cutting Out Self-Righteousness Philippians 3:1-11 As we continue this journey of hope together, we must be on guard against any areas of self-righteousness in our own lives. On the journey, you will never have your full act together. There will never be a second of your life in which you don’t need Jesus. It is simple to fall victim to self-righteousness. All it takes is a season of personal victories and you will be left with the misconception of your own powerful independence. The journey of hope will always require full dependence on Jesus. Read Philippians 3:1-11 today. Notice how Paul shares His need for Jesus, in the midst of all he could tote as self-righteous accomplishments. Paul David Tripp stated, “The Christmas story confronts our delusions that we can live healthy and wholesome independent lives”. During this advent season, remind your soul of the daily help you need. That help comes from the Lord, the Maker of Heaven and Earth (Psalm 121). He came so that in your dependence of Him, you can be liberated from the power of sin and death. He came so you can rest without the worries of doing everything on your own. He came for those that need help. Upon glancing at Luke 18, you will see a parable about the words of the Pharisee and tax collector. See their motives and learn from the Savior’s wisdom. Christmas is not about what you can do for yourself, but what Christ Jesus did for you. Today, list all the reasons why you need Jesus. Confess to any self-righteousness in your heart and live with deeper dependency. 7
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM B ER 6 The Promised Radiance Hebrews 1:1-4 The book of Hebrews contains the riches of several Old Testament promises fulfilled in Jesus, our Great High Priest and King. In our culture, we tend to be hooked to celebrities. These can be men or women in politics, sports, music, or movies. If you have social media, you are well versed in seeing daily news about unnecessary information for people most likely you will never meet. This advent season, are you more amazed by Jesus? Are you amazed that He is the radiance of the glory of God, the exact imprint of His Nature? Soak in the beginning of Hebrews by reading today’s passage. On your journey of hope, take time to be amazed by Jesus. He came to fulfill the promises seen throughout the Old Testament. He came to redeem you and I from sin’s curse, by placing that curse upon Himself on the cross. Don’t allow another Christmas to go by without adoring the One that conquered sin and death for you. Our attitude and position during advent must be on seeing the glory of Jesus, both in our planning and our spending. Henry Van Dyke famously wrote these words, which I believe capture the beauty of Hebrews 1:1-4 during advent. Joyful, joyful we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love. Hearts unfold like flowers before thee; Opening to the sun above. There will be many gifts, memories, sights, and sounds that will amaze you this season. Your mind will race with excitement as you relish the days of Christmas beauty and splendor. In the midst of such a wonderful time of year, take time each day to adore Jesus, the promised radiance. Today is a good day to begin. Today, read and learn more of the glory of Jesus. Take passages like John 1:14, Matthew 17:2, Colossians 2:9, and 2 Corinthians 4:6. Feel free to add more to your list. 8
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 7 Arriving in Obscurity Micah 5:2 What do you know of Bethlehem? Do you know it to be called the “City of David” (Luke 2:4). Do you know it to be the place promised by Micah, for the Savior to arrive? Today, it is quite the tourist location. However, in ancient times, it was a place of obscurity. Yes, it was known for Jacob, Rachel, Ruth, Boaz, and King David. Also…it was known for Jesus? Bethlehem, in Biblical times, was a town of less than 600 people. I have family that live in southern Illinois. A large town in their area would be around 1,400 people. Most surrounding towns would be less than 600. Yet, in that small area of the U.S., I feel the peace and splendor of God. Our nation is full of small towns. Heroes are born in small towns. Yet, in the promise and plan of the Father, the Son was born in…a small town. Today, Bethlehem is no longer a small town. It is a large city of over 100,000 people. Yet, as you think of the City of David, remember the humility of the story. A place too weak to be among the clans of Judah, was the delivery room of our Immortal King. A place mentioned at least twenty different times in 11 different books of the Bible. A place fit for the Savior. I like what Rick Warren said, “The miracle of Christmas is not on 34th Street; it’s in Bethlehem. Today, pray for your day to have reminders of God’s presence. Remember He is with you. Immanuel has indeed come. Enjoy walking on this side of heaven with His glorious fellowship. 9
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 8 A Sign Like No Other Isaiah 7:14 On your journey of hope, there will be plenty of signs. Just like any journey, there are times when you must see when to stop, turn, or keep going. In our physical bodies, we have embedded signs for us to know when we need water, rest, or cooling down. When I see certain times in my own temperament, I know I’m ready for a break. Today, we are going to examine a sign like no other. Many years before the arrival of Jesus to Bethlehem, we have the promise of a birth found in Isaiah’s prophecies. Some would be led to believe this sign and verse was connected only to the setting of King Ahaz’s time. Yet, Matthew includes this prophecy in Matthew 1:23. Some argue this is a double prophecy; both fulfilled in the time of Ahaz and more importantly in Jesus. In any case, the fact is God promised us a sign of His faithfulness. The sign is His Son born to the Virgin Mary, in Bethlehem, for the salvation of our souls. On your journey, you may be looking for proof that God loves you. You may be looking for a signal or sign that He is truly there and cares for your soul. I have good news for you. Jesus was born to the virgin Mary, as promised and predicted in the Old Testament. Although Jesus is at the right hand of the Father now, the Holy Spirit is with us on this earth. You are not alone on the journey. God is indeed here and with you. Jan Hus, an important 15th century Czech reformer once wrote, “Rejoice, that the immortal God is born, so that mortal man may live in eternity.” His birth was indeed a sign like no other. Today, pray for your day to have reminders of God’s presence. Remember He is with you. Immanuel has indeed come. Enjoy walking on this side of heaven with His glorious fellowship. 10
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 9 Promises Made Jeremiah 33:14-16 Have you ever made and kept a promise? Have you ever broken a promise? Today, we will see the promise from Jeremiah’s prophecy over the house of Israel and the house of Judah. The promise made was the arrival of Jesus, the righteous branch, who is indeed righteousness defined. When you ponder the baby born in a manger, tune your heart to celebrate the promise of God. He came, because the Father made a promise. He is faithful to fulfill all His promises. Take a few moments and meditate on today’s passage. J.I. Packer once wrote, “The stars may fall, but God’s promises will stand and be fulfilled.” You and I will go through seasons of disappointment. Someone may not be true to their word and ruin our expectations. There may be times when you find it difficult to trust another. During the advent season, build your trust and joy in the promises made by the Father and fulfilled by the Son. He can be trusted and He can restore in you what the locusts have eaten (Joel 2:25-32). He is everlasting and eternally consistent. Even when the days of this world seem dire and waning, His promises will stand. Jesus is our righteousness. Jesus is the promise that God is for us, not against us. Jesus is not just the reason for the season, He is the aim for all of life. If your heart is broken or your spirit is downcast this advent season, look to Jesus. Jeremiah said He would come, and He did. Today, pray for the Lord to assure you of His promises. Trust Him with the air you breathe, and keep your focus on His consistent faithfulness. He loves you. 11
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 1 0 Mary’s Journey Luke 1:26-38 We don’t know much about Mary and her origins. From what is gathered in scripture, she was a peasant young woman, living in Nazareth. Just like the birthplace of Jesus, she was from obscurity. She was engaged to be married to Joseph, the carpenter. She was a virgin when the angel Gabriel visited her, to announce her mission; to be pregnant and deliver Jesus, the Son of God. Can you imagine her journey? On Mary’s journey, she experienced quite a change in path. I’m sure as a little child, she had no idea she would be chosen to carry, deliver, and parent the Messiah on the earth. One of my favorite expressions of worship is found in her song of praise, known as The Magnificat (found in Luke 1:46-55). And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever. Mary’s journey of hope involved sacrificial trust and obedience to the will of the Father. She had to be willing to follow the Holy Spirit’s lead and face shame in public for being pregnant while betrothed. She followed, Christ was born, and salvation is offered today to all who believe. I’m thankful for her journey. Today, be willing to trust in the Lord and His direction for your journey. Soak in the truth of Proverbs 3:5-6, and live today with certainty in His perfect plans. 12
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 1 1 Joseph’s Journey Matthew 1:18-25 How can you journey through the advent season without glancing at the life of Joseph? We don’t know much about this faithful carpenter, other than what is found in the scriptures. Joseph was a man of integrity, as he was willing to protect Mary from her public shame in her surprise pregnancy. Yet, a dream interrupted his confusing pain and thus placed him on the journey with his betrothed. His journey of hope went from a simple plan of running his own carpentry business to raising the Son of God. If you ever thought your journey was overwhelming, look at Joseph! Spurgeon once said, “Infinite, and an infant. Eternal, and yet born of a woman. Heir of all things; yet the carpenter’s son.” This Jesus that rescued us from sin’s curse was a baby raised by a carpenter. No job on this earth is insignificant for the plans and purposes of our God. Our Father in heaven doesn’t look only at those of great success or worldly popularity. He looks at those with hearts of obedience and trust. Joseph was faithful to the mission and trusted the Father in his journey. Whether you are in school or work, God has a purposeful journey for you. Whether you are retired or brand new in your career, God has placed you on this earth for His glory. This advent season examine where you are in your current life stage. See the example from Joseph, the carpenter. He trusted and followed our God on perhaps the greatest journey he could’ve ever asked for…raising the Son of God! Today, pray for a clear focus on your journey. Instead of wanting to be someone else or do something else, look at where you are today. Trust the Lord has you there for a reason. Like Joseph, be willing to follow Him wherever He leads. 13
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 1 2 No Coincidences Luke 2:1-7 There are no coincidences when it comes to the providential plans of God. Sure, we can be convinced life sometimes has curious happenings that carve out unexpected results. Yet, in this journey of hope, remember God leads and God plans. Sometimes on your journey, you will experience moments in which your rationale planning is shaken. You may happen to be in a restaurant at the same time something monumental happens and your life is forever changed. If you have watched enough romantic movies, you can sometimes predict the plot as coincidences portrayed are obvious discoveries. Yet with God, there are no coincidences… especially when it comes to the arrival of the Son. Micah 5:2 takes away any suspicions toward coincidence. The prophet gave the plan from God, 700 years before the birth of Jesus, for where the Savior would be born. God in His glory would use a Roman Emperor to accomplish His plans. It brings a whole new meaning to, “The government will be upon His shoulders (Isaiah 9:6). Caesar Augustus, also known as Octavian, ruled Rome from 27 B.C. to A.D. 14. In His rule, Rome became peaceful, powerful, and prosperous. Yet, his greatest achievement was bringing the Savior to Bethlehem for His appointed birth. This was no coincidence. This was divine planning. This was the sovereign God; the Creator and Sustainer of life, in a manger, giving us the arrival of our promise for eternal life. Sometimes in life, strange things happen when it seems all things come together or intersect in surprising ways. I don’t believe it is a coincidence you are reading this right now. Our God is leading you on this journey of hope. Trust Him today, and be ready to experience His presence and planning. He loves you and deeply cares for you. He sent His Son, by the prophecy of Micah, to be born in the City of David. The hope for all humanity born, not out of coincidence, but in a perfect design. Today, pray and expect God’s presence to surround you. Trust in all the unknowns of this day, knowing He knows each step you will take. 14
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 1 3 No Room for Jesus? Luke 2:7 One detail of the Christmas story that always baffled me was the lack of vacancies for the family of our Savior. Bethlehem was much like many small towns off the interstate, when there may be one or two hotel options. If you’ve been traveling, especially with children, you may know the importance of finding a place to sleep for the night. On top of the need for an inn, Mary needed a place for delivery. Did you catch that detail? Don’t read the story and skip over important pieces! Staying at the inn would also give hope for an appropriate place to deliver a baby. With no rooms available, the young parents settled in a manger. He spent His first night, not in a 5 star hotel, but in a place with animals. As I’m getting older, I keep asking myself, “Why was there no room for Jesus?” As you journey through this advent season, make sure you keep the best room for Jesus. Amongst the purchasing, planning, cooking, and traveling; don’t miss out on the Savior. Luke 2:7 is a wake up call for all of us, especially in the church. The goal for the church is to exalt Jesus while fulfilling His Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20). We must never become so busy, even in the church, and place Jesus as an afterthought. He is the Head of the church (Ephesians 1:22-23) and the author and perfecter of the faith (Hebrews 12:2). He is why we have this wonderful season. Ask yourself this important question, “Do I have room for Jesus?” Or better yet, “Do I trust that my entire life and home belong to Him?” Years ago, Casting Crowns released a song entitled, While You Were Sleeping. The lyrics of the song still stir my heart with questions about that night in Bethlehem. Find a way to listen to the song today. I pray your heart is stirred as well. Today, make sure you have room for Jesus. Don’t get so busy in the holiday season and lose the vacancy of who matters most. This season, and all seasons, are about Him. 15
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 1 4 Jesus Is the True King Matthew 2:1-18 Today, I want you to examine Herod, the most disliked person in the Christmas story (My opinion, but I think I’m correct). His pride and ego led him to cast darkness in the midst of such a glorious occasion. Thankfully, the light of Jesus always shines brighter. Herod wanted to rule all the kingdom and he did not tolerate any potential political competitors. Take a few moments and read today’s passage. As you read, take note of the sinful motives of this wicked ruler. Who exactly was Herod? Glancing at history, you will discover this particular ruler was part of a family called…Herod. The Herod family ruled Palestine for many years. At least 4 different rulers were called Herod. In the Christmas story, Herod was often referred to as, “Herod the Great.” Judging by his motives and actions, he probably gave himself that name! In his efforts to trick the Maji and receive the location of King Jesus, he himself was fooled and had many baby boys killed in his rage. This part of the story breaks my heart. How can anyone be that evil or cruel? When sin becomes your king, you will reside in darkness. Trust Jesus, His light is always brighter. God, in His sovereignty and provision, led Mary and Joseph to Egypt until Herod’s death. This temporary move protected the Savior and continued the mission of redemption story. Nothing would slow down the power and majesty of the True King. He came to rescue you and me. As you take this journey of hope, take time to exalt the King. Today, praise Jesus for being the True King. Don’t live for your own kingdom, but enjoy serving in His. There still is much evil in this world, but Jesus wins. 16
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 1 5 The Light We All Need Isaiah 9:2 Have you ever hurt yourself trying to walk around your house in the dark? In my home, with four kids, I’m bound to step on something in the dark. I’m thankful for the small light that illuminates from my phone, preventing me from potential injuries. We all need light, especially when darkness interferes with the journey. This advent season, embrace the light of Jesus as He came to defeat the darkness in our lives. Jesus is the fulfillment of Isaiah 9:2. He is the Light (John 8:12) we all need. There is no reason to attempt life on this earth alone; left up to your own rationale or ambitions. Jesus came to outshine all your darkness. Whatever darkness you are struggling with this advent season, take comfort and joy in the everlasting light and grace of the Savior. In my first Christmas with First Baptist Church of Pensacola, my friend Bob Morrison provided an opportunity to sing one of my favorite songs. As a child, I Have Seen The Light became a holiday favorite. Each Christmas, I watched with joy as my mother, along with several other choir members, sang this beloved song while standing in a large wooden Christmas tree. Years later, as the new pastor of my beloved faith family, I was blessed again by the song, along with Ross Lankford and Casey Henry. Here are some words, written by Chris Machen and Robert Sterling, I have seen the Light shining in the darkness, Bursting through the shadows, delivering the dawn. I have seen the Light whose holy name is Jesus, His kingdom is forever; He reigns on Heaven’s throne! Today, trust that Jesus is the light you need. Don’t fall for the trap of darkness. Don’t try to approach the day in your own power or strength. You need Him, with every step you take. 17
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 1 6 Preparing the Way Luke 1:5-17 Yesterday, we examined the antagonist in the Christmas story. Today, we will examine another baby. On the journey God laid before us in redemption story, He included a man to prepare the way for the Son of Man. His name is John, the Baptist. This advent season, I want you to be thankful for his ministry and how he was used to make way for Gospel advancement. Notice the prophecy before his birth. His journey paved the way for so many to have hope in their journey. D.A. Carson in his commentary on Matthew wrote, “Just as the angel’s announcement to Joseph declared Jesus’ primary purpose to save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21), so the first announcement of the kingdom (delivered by John the Baptist) is associated with repentance and confession of sin (Matthew 3:6).” We must remember the importance of the birth story and purpose of John the Baptist as we embrace this advent season. God sent him out in the wilderness to prepare the way for the mission of the Savior. He followed God’s mission with intentionality and humble abandonment of his own plans. Are you living each day with intentional dependency of God’s plan? On your journey, are you taking steps toward making Jesus known to all who come across your path? This advent season be thankful for the ministry of John the Baptist and look at your own life as a messenger of God’s amazing grace. The wilderness is still out there, and many need the Gospel. Will you go and share? Today, pray for your life to be a messenger. Look at your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers and ask the question, “Do they know Jesus?” This advent season, may your journey be one of Gospel proclamation. 18
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 1 7 A Lesson from the Shepherds Luke 2:8-18 I’ve always been a fan of the shepherds in the Christmas story. I can’t get these guys out of my mind when this time of year enters our journey. God, in His matchless grace, gave the Gospel announcement to the lowest of society while they were at work… watching sheep in a field. The Gospel announcement was given to the least of these. In one scene, the majesty of God was displayed in the sky with a host of angels…to shepherds with a host of…sheep. As you look at this part of the story this advent season, let it serve as a reminder that in this world, there are no elite. True, our culture may have political leaders and celebrities that draw much attention. Yet, in comparison to the power and majesty of Jesus, all of us are in the same category; broken people in need of redemption. The shepherds took a great risk in their journey to see Jesus. It was a major financial risk, as they were willing to radically follow the will of God by leaving their field. Their reward in the journey was a front row seat to exalt the Savior. Can you imagine what transpired in their minds when they arrived to the manger scene? What lesson can be learned from the shepherds? When God calls, will you follow? It may be a stirring in your heart for the mission field or a desire to leave the comforts of your routine in order to serve others. This advent season learn what it means to have faith-centered obedience from the shepherds. They trusted in the message and followed the path to the Savior. In return, they received the treasure of Jesus and a transformed life. I believe they became messengers after leaving Bethlehem. On your journey, are you trusting the Lord with where He is leading? It may involve sacrifice, but the reward could be a front row seat to watch the Lord use you for kingdom impact. Today, look at your current journey. Are you living with faith- centered obedience? Take a few minutes and ask God what lesson you need to learn from the shepherds today. 19
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 1 8 Mary’s Heart Luke 2:19 During the busyness of this advent season, what have you treasured in your heart? Have there been moments in which you pondered what you experienced and gave glory to God? Maybe it was a song shared with your family or driving around looking at Christmas lights. Maybe it was seeing a toddler take their first steps or having a cup of hot chocolate with a dear friend. Each day, you are given moments. Some are good and some perhaps you’d rather not repeat. Take time today to see Mary’s heart. As she experienced the testimony of the shepherds’ journey to the manger, she treasured the moment. More than 2,000 years later, anyone can read the moment she treasured. Let me challenge you to try something new this advent season. Get out a sheet of paper or pick up a journal and record moments made with others. Write what God allowed you to experience on this day. Years from now, you may have a night in which the words you write today are needed for your soul in the future. I’m reminded every advent season of the reality of life and death. There will be some loved ones next Christmas that may be in heaven, therefore I want to treasure the time I have today. What moments today will you treasure? Will you take time on your journey to pause and soak in what is happening? Will you put away any distractions and soak in time with the people in your life? Today, treasure what God is doing. Spend time with others. Make it a priority to pause and reflect on moments made. There are people in your life today that need your time and devotion. Don’t waste those moments. Learn from Mary and treasure them. 20
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 1 9 The Power of a Baby John 1:1 Who could have imagined there would be so much power in a baby? Who could have predicted a powerful king would be envious and Maji would follow the sky’s radiance to worship a baby? Listen to these words from Warren Wiersbe, “What a paradox that a babe in a manger should be called mighty! Yet even as a babe, Jesus Christ was the center of power. His birth affected the heavens and caused a dazzling star to appear. Midnight became midday as the glory of the Lord appeared to men.” Indeed, what a powerful phenomenon in time was all the power and glory given to a baby. In the beginning, there was Jesus. He wasn’t created and introduced to the world for the first time as a baby. He is fully God, as the Son. When Mary held the Savior, she was holding the One that holds all the universe together. If you’ve ever been around a family with a baby, you know how schedules and decisions are often dictated by the baby’s mood and needs. In our world today, there is some power found in a baby as parents’ sleep and eating habits hang on the balance of naps and temperaments. Yet, unlike any baby ever created, this baby is Immanuel. What Child is this who, laid to rest On Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom Angels greet with anthems sweet, While shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and Angels sing; Haste, haste, to bring Him laud, The Babe, the Son of Mary. William Chatterton Dix, 1865 This advent season, when you see the manger scene in front yards or store windows, remember the power that is in Mary’s arms. John 1:1 is the manger scene. Rejoice! Today, see the power of Jesus…even as a baby. See how the world was transformed by His birth. Have you been transformed by His birth? 21
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 2 0 Answering the Question Matthew 16:15-17 Have you ever been on a long journey with children? If so, you may have experienced hundreds of questions as each mile appears longer from the next. Questions range from where the next stop will be and can another movie be played in the van. We all have to answer questions during the holiday season. Where will you spend Christmas Eve? Were you able to get that pony Susie wanted? Where did you put the ham? As you continue the journey of hope this advent season, let me ask you a very important question, “Who do you say Jesus is?” See the conversation Jesus had with Peter. Look at both the question and Peter’s answer. Would your answer be similar to his? Our world today has very interesting answers to this question. Some believe Jesus was a great influencer, along with other philosophers or deities. Some believe Jesus came only to fight against oppression and promote justice. Some believe Jesus had a conservative agenda while others believe He was liberal with His words. Some believe He is one of many ways to heaven. What do you believe? Let me answer this question with the correct answer. Peter’s words give us the answer, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God” (Matthew 16:16). Jesus is the Living Son of God, who came into the world to save us from our sins. He is eternal, good, holy, just, merciful, righteous, and love. He is the victor over evil and the light which outshines any darkness. He is truth and He is the bread of life. He is the eternal source for unstoppable joy. On your journey, He is your hope. How would you answer the question today? How will you live by your answer? J.I. Packer said, “The Christmas message is that there is hope for humanity, hope of pardon, hope of peace with God, hope of glory.” Does your journey today have hope? Today, think about the question Jesus asked Peter. What is your answer? Are you sharing your answer with others? Today, make your life back-up the words you put together in answering the question. 22
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 2 1 Sharing the Greatest Gift of All Romans 10:13-15 During Christmas season, much money is spent on gifts. Unnecessary stress and pressure can weigh heavily on parents as they wait for gifts to come via snail mail or an item from a store when stock is refilled. In 2020, Covid increased online shopping in drastic numbers. According to Adobe Analytics, online shopping grew last year by 32.2% from 2019, showing a total of $188.2 billion spent. That’s quite a bit of money spent on gifts! I love giving and receiving gifts. I’m not here to hate on gift-giving today. However, I want to help point you to the greatest gift of all. This advent season consider how you are serving the gift of Jesus with others on your journey. I think you would agree with me when I say this world needs Jesus. The good news of Jesus’ birth, death, burial, resurrection, and ascension must be shared until our time on this side of heaven is done. The Gospel message must be heard and seen. What if during this advent season, you shared the greatest gift of all to someone in need? Corrie ten Boom once said, “The measure of a life, after all, is not its duration but its donation.” Who needs to hear of the love of Jesus? As you are one day closer to Christmas morning, look at the number of gifts you’ve purchased. Ask yourself this question, “Am I making sure the greatest gift of all is heard and seen from my life and generosity?” Perhaps the greatest gift someone near you receives is eternal life in Jesus, by your witness and testimony. Today, be generous with sharing the Gospel with someone. Let your words articulate the message and your actions reveal your joy. Be open today for God to use you in blessing another with the reason for the season. 23
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 2 2 An Unhurried Life Philippians 4:5-7 As a pastor, December is the busiest month of the year in my life. There are only a few days open in the month once November concludes. Last year, when Christmas was over, I asked myself this question, “Did I take time to be unhurried and enjoy the advent?” That question is still on my mind approaching this advent season; therefore I want us to assess it together. As each day is full of activities and preparation, are you giving yourself unhurried time? Are you pausing and meditating on the purpose of the month? Give your soul a gift right now and breathe slowly in and out. Put away any distractions and enjoy unhurried time with the Lord. Christmas can produce great anxiety and frustrations in the busy hearts of many. I’ve always enjoyed Paul’s words to the church at Philippi. They have served me well in seasons of chaos. Today, as advent continues, I want you to apply the truth in today’s passage. Anticipate His peace will sustain you as you prepare for Christmas morning and days after. His endless company will never allow you to be alone. His unending love will assure your soul of your true identity, a child of the Living God. Enjoy an unhurried day. Dallas Willard urged followers of Jesus to, “Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life.” In today’s culture, we are daily bombarded with distractions. Take the notifications on your phone as an example. How many times do you pick up your phone and get on social media each day? Do you get so busy with meaningless tasks, you lose time for what is most important? The unhurried life takes inventory of hours spent and realigns your schedule with grace-saturated peace. This season can be very busy. Trust me, I get it. In the busyness of the holidays, aim for an unhurried life. Today, stop what you are doing and be still. Share with the Lord all that is on your mind and heart. Take a walk outside or find a comfortable seat and listen to the Scriptures. Be faithful to your scheduling commitments, but do so with an unhurried life. 24
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 2 3 He Cares for You 1 Peter 5:7 Continuing the thoughts from yesterday, I want to assure you of this truth; The Lord cares for you. He cares for your life in whatever emotional season you find yourself in. Christmas is a joy-filled time for many, yet it is also a painful time for many. Some have healthy families while others are in damaging environments. Today, I want you to look above your current situation (Colossians 3:2) and find comfort in God’s care for your life. How can you believe or trust that God cares for you? I’ve made a list of bible verses to assist you in believing He cares. Take a few minutes and meditate on these truths: Matthew 11:28 Matthew 6:26 Isaiah 41:10 Psalm 55:22 Luke 12:24 Psalm 23 John 16:33 Psalm 8 Psalm 34:18 Trust your situation with the care of your Creator. Calvin Miller once said, “Our homes and families can sometimes be sources of struggle, But His reality is, for every family, a source of constant care. Doesn’t that feel good at Christmas?” He cares and this advent season, challenge your heart to believe that truth. Today, rest in the care of your Heavenly Father. Look again at the Bible verses provided above. Give your situation over to the care of the Lord. You are not alone and you can have a blessed advent, knowing that He cares for you. 25
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 2 4 Preparation Day Luke 2:1-20 Can you believe Christmas arrives tomorrow? This month has indeed flown by. I’m thankful we have been on this journey of hope, together. I trust the Spirit has done a great work in your soul as you have followed Him daily. In today’s passage, I want you to read the Christmas story again. This story will prepare you for the excitement of tomorrow. Read the passage slowly, with unhurried time (as we discussed a few days ago). The story never grows old. For my family tradition, we will read the story tonight to our four kids before they go to bed. I want my children to embrace God’s faithfulness born in the manger. Yes, there will be excitement in many homes as presents sit under the tree. However, in the midst of all the excitement, prepare for the greatest gift. His Name is Jesus. Today is the day we prepare for tomorrow. I hope you will connect with a local church in a worship experience. I hope your journey will involve intentional prayers of thanksgiving over the birth of the Risen Savior. Value Him above all that happens today, and I assure you this Christmas Eve will not be wasted. Imitate the words of St. Augustine when he said, “Christ is not valued at all unless He is valued above all.” Pray today for your focus and excitement to center on Jesus above anything else. Read Luke 2 with family and/or friends. Sing Christmas hymns and prepare for the celebration tomorrow. 26
2021 ADVENT DEVOTIONAL DECEM BER 2 5 Celebration Day! Colossians 1:15-20 Merry Christmas! Christ Jesus was born in Bethlehem, to begin His rescue mission for your life and mine. The greatest gift of all time was given to the Virgin Mary and faithful Joseph more than 2,000 years ago. Today is the gift of the Gospel. Today is the celebration of God’s faithfulness to this world. Today is also a good day to drink a lot of coffee, since you probably didn’t sleep well last night. Paul’s words to the church at Colossae portray the power of the Incarnation. Jesus came, because in Him, all things hold together. Your eternal life is secured by His perfect blood and righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:17). Your identity is in the gift of His grace (Ephesians 2:8-10). Your purpose in life is to share His story, as representatives of His Kingdom (1 Peter 2:9). Celebrate today and tomorrow…and for all eternity. You are loved by God! Christmas morning serves proof of that love. Phillips Brooks, 19th Century Episcopal rector to Trinity Church in Boston wrote, “Then let every heart keep Christmas within. Christ’s pity for sorrow, Christ’s hatred for sin, Christ’s care for the weakest, Christ’s courage for right, Everywhere, everywhere, Christmas tonight!” Yes, let the celebration in you impact the world for Jesus. He has come. Immanuel. God with us. Amen. Today, celebrate! Reflect on the power of Colossians 1:15-20. Treasure the moments made with others and remember…He cares… because He came. You can trust Him on your journey of hope. Hark! The Herald Angels sing, “Glory to the new-born King; Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!” Joyful, all ye nations, rise. Join the triumph of the skies. With th’ Angelic Hosts proclaim, “Christ is born in Bethlehem!” Hark! the herald angels sing, “Glory to the new-born King.” - Charles Wesley, 1739 27
