MATCH REPORT MONDAY 30thAUG PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN NORTH LEAGUE Felixstowe & Walton Utd 2 Dereham Town 0 Felixstowe & Walton United produced a scintillating performance at The Goldstar Ground to secure their first league win of the season against previously unbeaten Dereham Town. Stuart Ainsley and Miles Powell the scorers of two first class goals for the home side who could afford a missed penalty in a game they dominated from start to finish in front of a bumper Bank Holiday crowd of 405. HOW WE Felixstowe were again forced into making changes to the starting eleven after suffering further injuries during the narrow LINED UP defeat at Canvey Island on Saturday, Callum Bennett, Lamell Howell, Miles Powell and Curtley Williams started the match 1. Stuart Ainsley nearly wrapped up the goal of the season competition that he had already staked his claim for earlier in the match with a superb effort on 87 minutes, he created the chance himself with a brilliant tackle in the centre circle and as he spotted the goalkeeper off his line, he sent in an effort from a full 50 yards that was heading in until the backtracking keeper got a finger to the ball and diverted it over the bar. Joe Whight had the last chance of the game in added on time and was unlucky to see his long range floating shot just go over the top. Stuart Boardley spoke to the media team after the game. “We are really pleased, I felt from one to eleven we were fantastic, we probably up and smashed the penalty hard and central should have been further in front at half time, but the strike cannoned off the bar and to much like at Canvey on Saturday, but we had safety. The Seasiders did go missed penalty and a couple of one on one further in front on 57 minutes, Ollie Canfer broke chances that we haven’t put away, but overall from the middle of the pitch and Miles Powell we are really pleased with the lads, the general took the ball and whilst others complained as performance was really up there and to get he was clattered into, he won the loose ball a result was great.” and nonchalantly curled in a beautiful shot Boards went on to say. “Dereham are a which nestled superbly into the far corner to really good side, Olly and Adam have got them huge cheers from the crowd. going really well, they’re well drilled and have Zak Brown was close to a goal on 63 some good attacking players in particular so minutes, as the ball came through the middle he they’ll be up there at the end of the season, dropped his shoulder and fooled the defender no doubts. Q&AWITH MILES (MILO) POWELL After the Seasiders Bank Holiday win against Dereham Town, I put a few questions to goalscorer Miles Powell about his goal, start to the season, and how good it feels to be playing football inf ront of the Goldstar crowd again.... You’ve made a great start to the season with two goals already in the bag, talk us through your goal against Dereham... The old cliché of right place at the right time really, the ball came back out to me on the edge of the area and my first instinct was to have a shot. Luckily, it flew in. It’s been a frustrating year with not a lot of football due to the Covid pandemic, how did you manage to keep yourself fit during this time, and how good is it to be back playing football regularly again? No-one will believe me when I say I have been doing plenty of road running and hill sprints in my own time. Which I do not like but it felt like I had to in preparation for this season due to the quality of the squad. It’s great to be honest. The best thing for me is being around the boys again, nothing quite compares to being in a changing room full of personalities with the banter flying around. Which match sticks out for you as your most memorable during your time at the club? The Portman Road Final in the Suffolk FA Premier Cup was a highlight despite the
91 result, but for me the Semi-Final against Needham Market at Leiston. Against a strong Needham team we were quality, and to score the winner is always nice. GOALS IN 277 GAMES Felixstowe and Walton players start to celebrate after Miles Powell’s strike hits the net against Needham Market You’re one of Felixstowe & Walton United’s all time most prolific strikers with 91 goals in 277 games for the club, out of all your goals scored, which one is your favourite? Again, there have been a few, as previously stated the goals against Needham in the Semi Final is up there. I have always scored good goals against Godmanchester for some reason. But for me must be the last-minute winner against Thetford at home. Dinking the keeper from 25 yards in the last minute when everyone is screaming at me saying “DON’T SHOOT” or “PASS THE BALL”. God knows why I did chip it, and I was praying when it left my foot. Luckily for me it sailed in, otherwise I would have been battered by players, managers and most probably Ray Stanbridge in the crowd. One of the targets I have set myself this season is to reach 100 goals for the club.
What are your thoughts on the current squad, new additions and season ahead? I’m excited about the season ahead. The boys that have been brought in are top quality but more importantly are genuinely top guys and have integrated really well. Even Hits (Josh Hitter) who had punched half the squad before even signing, including me, but who can blame him I suppose?! Personally, I have had a stop-start to the season, having to go get minutes with the under 23’s which is not what you want to do, but have to do. The competition for places is great and healthy for the team. Every player knows they have someone who wants their shirt which automatically pushes you to work harder and keep it. The Seasiders are unbeaten at home in all competitions since December 2019, how much of a difference does it make to the team playing in front of the Goldstar crowd? It’s massive, as players we love it. There is nothing better when they are singing your name. The boys really do feed off the crowd and I personally speak on behalf of the lads who appreciate the support we get. I was here when we had 50 spectators and was fighting relegation so to see how far the club have come on and off the pitch is brilliant. Long may it continue.
NOW FOR SOME RANDOM QUESTIONS... If you had to pick a five a side team including only players that you’ve played with/against who would you pick? Wow! what a question... I’m not sure I have an answer for that!!!!! Marcus Garnham in between the sticks, Callum Bennett, Jordy Matthews, Danny Thrower and Allicion Blake. I’m sticking myself on the bench or I will be gaffer because I am not getting in that team! Which team do you support and how do Which player from our current playing squad you predict they’ll do this season? could you easily beat in an arm wrestle? I will keep it brief, I support Arsenal and if we All of them, with my physique and muscle are still in the Premier League by May, I will mass I could smash them all! be happy. And finally, what is your prediction for the Who is the worst DJ within the current Emirates FA Cup tie against Great Wakering Seasiders squad? Rovers? Tough one as all the boys are into the same It will be a tough game, it always is. But I am sort of music. Ainso (Stuart Ainsley) must be confident and am going to say we will win up there with his love for Little Mix. and be in the hat for the next round draw!

Rovers were the leagues most dominant clubs, especially in the 1960s and 1970s and to this day remain so on record. The switch in 1982 saw the club move to the newly formed Southend & District Alliance Football League, but sadly this league folded in 1989 leaving Rovers with a decision to move back to the Southend & District League or take a step up in standard. With what most Rovers feel to be the best squad amassed by a manager, in this case Eddie Nash, Rovers took the decision to step up to intermediate level and joined the Essex Intermediate League.
In the 1994-1995 season Rovers narrowly beat Sawbridgeworth Town FC for the Essex Senior League title. Rovers had collected 71 points for the season and lost just three times although the title win was only won on goal difference (18). During that season Rovers forward Paul Flack scored 28 goals, which included a haul of 4 goals away at Eton Manor as Rovers celebrated a 9-0 victory.
