Commodore’s Message I have been writing these for four years now and never had I had a problem finding something to say…. Until now. This has been a very difficult month for me as Commodore. There have been several major issues to deal with and all of them just take the fun away from the club. It has taken a lot of my time, a lot of emails, and a lot of effort working on these. But we have made very good progress, and all of which is for the good of the club. It never ceases to amaze me though, this is a boating club. It is supposed to be fun. Leave the problems, religion, and politics at the front gate before you come in. We are ALL here to have a good time, and everyone has their own opinions on those topics that always vary so very widely. Those of you that attended our Opening Weekend might have noticed that I had asked our First Lady Sandy not to sit during the Ceremony, but to stand next to me during the entire service. I also did something that no one has done before, I had her join me at the podium when I gave my address. That was a calculated move on my part, totally by design and for one reason. She has been there for me in all of this, when I fall she stands me up, and I do the same for her. It was done to show everyone that WE STAND TOGETHER. The Baltimore Yacht Club stands together as well, and we will get through our issues! So enough about that. Moving on to a more festive topic, this year’s week cruise was a great time. In my last Spray I promised good weather, well I did not break my promise….. Thanks Marty! The only thing I did not count on was the heat, good grief was it hot! Our Fleet Captain Bill and Fleetastic Karen did a fantastic job of keeping everyone refreshed though. A lot of time was spent in the pools! The “Final Dinner” at Chesapeake Beach was fantastic. Thank you Bill and Karen! Next up. I did it again. I opened my month and next thing you know I volunteered for something again. You think I would know better. This time I “volunteered” (thanks Wayne) to be the Chairperson for the decorating committee for the Chesapeake Commodores Club convention in Ocean City this year. The theme for this year is “Broadway”. We picked (Sandy’s idea) the Broadway show “Beetlejuice”, remember the movie. I think we can have some real fun with this one. I will be looking for help in the very near future, so if you get a tap on the shoulder, it might be me. Everyone enjoy “Week on the Island”!! Commodore Bill Morgan
Vice Commodore’s Message Hello everyone, happy summer! I can’t believe it’s August already, it seems like there’s never enough time. I guess the biggest shock to my system came about two weeks ago when I saw my first “back to school” signs. Another shocker was the other morning when I realized while I was heading out to work that the sun wasn’t up yet. So what’s this all mean? WOTI!!! Yep, we can’t let a little thing like being over the hump of summer to stop us from continuing to enjoy what has proved to be, weather wise, a beautiful year to be on and around the water. Reading through the WOTI schedule and seeing the special WOTI updates coming from the office you can’t help but be excited about what Fleet Captain Bill and Fleetastic Karen have put together. It should be an epic week of fun and adventure. I want to personally thank everyone who has pitched in during interviews of new members. Participating and conveying your own personal experiences and excitement about the Club to prospective members has been invaluable in convincing many to join our group. Demonstrating how friendly our membership is, they felt a part of it all before they even joined. Once again, thank you! This is just another example of membership taking ownership of our Club. It’s your club; enjoy it, nurture it and help keep it the thriving organization that it is. Your participation is truly what makes the Club go ‘round. Looking ahead, there’s so much going on with the Club it’s hard to find a starting point. This month is WOTI, the Crab Feast and the weekend cruise. I really enjoy the cruises because you get to spend relaxed time with friends and it always amazes me how many people you get to know that might have been only acquaintances or you had never even met before. Yep, I like the cruises! On a personal note, Ruthie and I are on pins and needles waiting for a closing date on a new boat. Crossing over to the dark side (power boat) unfortunately is a necessary endeavor due to health reasons. Sailing is fun and I’ll always love and appreciate it, but at some point you have to face the reality of getting a little older and less agile. For me sadly, that nexus has arrived. I wish everyone a fun, exciting and safe August. We’ve been blessed with some of the best weather imaginable and I’m thankful that we’ve all been able to take advantage. Just thinking about all the rain and washouts last year magnifies the glory that is this year. Like I said, blessed! I look forward to seeing everyone on the hill and around the basin. Enjoy it now, Labor Day is only four weeks away. Of course, that opens the door to all the autumn excitement… Vice Commodore Joe Vislocky
Rear Commodore’s Message Hello Everyone!! Wow!! Here it is August already!! Where has the summer gone? We’ve had so much fun so far, I can’t wait till next year. The Summer Cruise was great!! I want to thank Fleet Captain Bill Ortman and Fleetastic Karen for a super job getting us all organized to have a great time!! Amazing Ports of Call and activities. A fun time was had by all. Also, I want to thank everyone who helped my First Mate Pat after her fall on the boat. Getting her off of the boat and into the wheel chair was a challenge. But, after a hands on examinations by Dr. George Coder and Dr. Don Dietrick she was good to go!! Pat is feeling much better now, thanks to all your help and attention. Week on the Island is coming up and looks like many great events will take place. I will be out part of the week on business, but will be on the Island for first weekend and then again on Thursday and Friday at the end of WOTI. We are looking forward to a great weekend summer cruise to Haven Harbor, Rock Hall on August 23rd, 24th and 25th. We have some new signs going up to address Swimming Pool issues and Vendors that do work on boats in the Basin. So, please pay attention to the new signs and help us monitor any issues. If there is an issue, please get in touch with any Officer who may be on the Island at that time. If we don’t know about issues, we can’t help. So, for now see you on the Island….Where the Sun always shines!! Thank You Rear Commodore Barry Scott 443-807-9870
Fleet Captain’s Message Greetings Members, Summer is in full swing as I write this article. We recently returned to BYC after our annual weeks cruise and I’m pleased to report that everyone enjoyed their vacation. We had approximately twenty boats at each stop and fortunately a pool also. To say it was a hot one would be an understatement!! I *we+ did discover an interesting, pleasant surprise at Spring Cove Marina. They actually fill their pool during the hot summer months with spring water. I found it the most refreshing surprise on our trip. While at Spring Cove we enjoyed some of the best steamed crabs in recent memory. Steamed crabs, Md. Tomatoes, and corn on the cob; add a cold beer and old and new friends on a hot summer afternoon, it just doesn’t get better than that. Capt. Tom Strobel certainly is a crab eating machine. He enjoyed crabs with the group, and then later in the evening he hosted his own feast with some leftover crabs. If this was not enough, the next morning he again was observed eating more crabs, breaking the claws with a Capt. Morgan bottle in place of a hammer. I just hope they have blue crabs in Florida for your eating pleasure. The end to our vacation was celebrated with dinner at the Rod and Reel restaurant in Chesapeake Beach. Karen and I were surprised when Commodore presented us with gifts that were given to us at the end of dinner. Again, thank you. Now onto August and the beginning of WOTI. We have scheduled some interesting events during the week with events for children and adults alike. Signup sheets are in the lobby with dates, times and cost, if required, so please take time to review the events. The main feature of WOTI is the annual Silent auction, Chaired this year by Sam and Keith Lessner. They have promised some unique and interesting items for this fundraiser. Bid sheets will be available in the club house, so place a bid and help us out. The auction results will be revealed Thursday night after the live auction. If you have not been to this auction, it is your chance to bid on those “must have items” that our members have graciously donated. On August 17th we will host our annual crab feast. Please sign up and join us for another chance to enjoy friends and crabs. Tom Strobel is chair of this event, so eat fast if you want your fill!! August 24-25 is our weekend cruise to beautiful Haven Harbor marina in Rock Hall. Sign ups will be forth coming next week. We have reserved 20 slips, and can add more if necessary. This summer is really flying by quickly. Maybe I’ll get a chance to step back and enjoy Week on the Island a bit. See you on the Hill Fleet Captain Bill Ortman signing off.

Thank you for your continued support of the Mates and our community partners. Our next meeting will be Friday, September 6th at 8:30pm in the Island view Room – All are welcome to attend and see just what the Mates are up to at BYC and in our community. Take Care, Lori A. Ostendarp BYC Mates President
A Message from the Princess “Hear ye! Hear ye! The week’s cruise was a blast!” reports Princess Madeline of the Baltimore Yacht Club. Princess Madeline attended the BYC week’s cruise with her family and was reportedly seen lounging by the pool’s most of the day. Local spectators enjoyed catching the Princess rent kayaks with her brother and friend, grab a steak at the local restaurant in Kent Island, and even visit some ice cream shops. According to Herrington Harbour Royal Correspondent, other cruisers spent most of their time in the pool with adult beverages, laughing and having fun. The Spray caught up with Princess Madeline and asked her what her plans were for the rest of the boating season. Royals aren’t known to reveal many details about future appearances, but she did have this to share - ” I am really excited for WOTI at BYC. I plan on hosting a Princess Pool Party, Movie, and Tea Party; I am even planning on working on an Auction Item and I may even compete in the Cardboard Boat Races again this year.” Until next time! Princess Madeline A & B Pier Report Wow, where has the summer gone? I can’t believe it’s August already and we’re seeing “Back to School” ads on tv. If it’s August that only means one thing – WOTI! Here’s some breaking news for 2020 WOTI: HELP WANTED! After 13 years, Linda Stank, Connie Ziegfeld, Rosalie Brennan and helpers have announced that this is their last year for the WOTI wine tasting. It's been a great event, and if anyone is interested in taking it over, please contact Connie for details. The group would like to thank all who helped and attended over the years, and hope that a new group will continue to support WOTI with a similar activity. Reminder: Our Labor Day Cookout will be on Sunday, September 1st at 1pm location TBD. As always please bring a side dish or dessert to share. I will be posting signs in the pier message boards soon with all the info. If you haven’t paid your pier dues you can do so at the cookout, $25.00 per boat. That’s all for now, hoping for some good stories from WOTI to report in my next issue. Take Care, Lori A. Ostendarp Lori.ostendarp@morganstanley.com
C Pier Report Summer is just flying by. First up, a C Pier reminder: Pier dues are $25 and if you have not paid Tom Strobel, please don't. Pay Kris Stremmel on Lady Kris Sea instead because Tom and Robyn are selling everything and moving to Florida. They will certainly be missed. Tom and his brother usually handled C Pier Crab Feast grilling duties, so a volunteer or two will be needed to take over. I will spare everybody; I either incinerate foods on the grill or you need to microwave them for food safety reasons. C Pier was well represented on the club cruise: Joe and Kris Stremmel, Phil and Sue Shaffer, George Harrison and Julie Bertoldi, Bob and Nora Rueter, Don and Joan Dietrick, Don and Stacy Mellinger, Frank and Patty Garey, Tom and Robyn Strobel, Andy and Diane Kowal, George and Edwina Coder, I'm sure I'm missing some people...all attended one or more of the stops. Of course the officers also cruised - Bill and Karen Ortman, Barry Scott and Pat Meredith, and Joe Vislocky and Ruth Fuller. I have only heard good things and that it was really, really hot. The Stremmels and Shaffers and some Sue Haven folk have been out cruising again, after the club cruise, and P/C Jim and I plan to meet up with them in Rock Hall. It was great to see Lynn Hannon back on Moonshadow. Hopefully, next time she will not be wearing a boot and can get around even better. I can't believe it is almost time for the kids to head off to college: Hannah Boyd back to University of Pittsburgh in a couple of weeks, James to Millerville University a week later. Dan and Beth Dietrick will be helping Ehren move to Rochester and Duncan to Memphis. I am a twin, but my sister and I went to the same college so my parents just needed a bigger truck. I am not going to be able to attend much of Week on the Island, so remember to email me any news:: Valerie Paluszynski, Paluszynski@comcast.net
D-Pier Report Ahoy D Pier! It sure was a hot July! The good news is that this year’s weather so far has been much better than last year when endless rain filled the Bay with debris and caused many boat trip cancellations. This year, D Pier boats have been traveling. Recently, Ed and Linda Gerner, aboard CHESAPEAKE ROGUE, cruised to Sunset Harbor in Ocean City to visit their grandchildren who live in Ocean Pines. They also had a nice visit with P/C Andy & P/FL Myrtie Adkins. The Adkins’ SUNKIST was there for a 6 week stay so Andy could chase fish out in the ocean. In other D Pier cruising news, WEATHER OAR KNOT (Marty and Sharon Bass) and BLUE EYES (Lisa and Chris Wooten) had a great overnight stay at Skipjack Cove Marina. SMARTY PANTS (Colleen and Jim Smart) joined SEA NOTE 2 (P/C Wayne and P/FL Debbie Penczek) on a visit to Chesapeake YC, and BEAR-LY LEGAL II (Joe and Kathy Hellner) dropped by Annapolis YC. Many D Pier boats were also along for all or parts of the Annual BYC Summer Cruise to enjoy the ports of Mears Kent Narrows, Spring Cove at Solomons Island, and Herrington Harbor Marina. The tiki bar next to the pool at Spring Cove makes it hard to get out and visit the town, but it is well worth the effort including waiting by the water for some great ice cream as the sun goes down. Congratulations to Kent and Sylvia Terry who celebrated 44 years together (41 years married as of July 29th) by taking a trip across the country to see family in places like West Virginia and St Louis. While at Sunset Harbor, Ed assisted Andy in replacing the ship's shore power inlet. Andy had two complaints: 1. Bertram had installed it with 5200 sealant meaning he had a devil of a time breaking it loose. 2. Bertram would no longer, after a mere 32 years, cover it as a warranty item. In addition to enjoying Rose Briggs’ trip into Spa Creek (reported last month), the Brennans, the Briggs, Larry Vakoutis and Elke, and the Gerners, on a June cruise, all enjoyed Annapolis Yacht Basin Co., Annapolis YC (3rd floor for dinner), and The Preserve on Main St. for dinner the second night. Linda, Al & Ed volunteered for Race Committee on Saturday of their sojourn for the Annapolis Newport race. They ended up on a Sabre 45 as the check in boat out at R 2 off Annapolis. They then followed the race on the Sabre 45 for a while, watching in awe as top racing sailors did their thing. Spinnakers popped and disappeared as if by magic as the fleet soon vanished down the Bay. Finally, have you ever heard of a "hanging chad"? Well, P/C Andy had a “hanging trim tab” (hanging by the ram only). He assembled a 4 man work crew (after receiving the necessary parts by expedited delivery), had the boat hauled at 9:00 AM and back in the water by 10:30 AM. That's real efficiency, powered by Coors Lite! Until next time, see you on D Pier! Joe Hellner Wayne relaxing as Andy and Diane Kowal Sharon, Marty, Chris, and Lisa at Skipjack Cove (C Pier) ferry him to dinner at Stan and Joe’s Riverside near Chesapeake YC
Recently Dredged Travelift Area Now Plenty Water!!!
Sue Island Sue Well, since my last post, so much has happened at the club (but isn't that always the way it is?). The club celebrated our nation's birthday by hosting a great weekend of fireworks and a parade. Mother Nature gave the fireworks display a run for its money! The lightening was as spectacular as the Middle River fireworks. Have to throw a "job well done" to Scott, Chef Eric and the BYC staff for an amazing job that weekend!!! You all really got it done!! If you did not join the club's vacation cruise, you missed a good time with great destinations!!! Fleet Captain Bill and Fleetastic Karen knocked it out of the park!!! The cocktail parties were just the best! Want proof, check out the picture of our Commodore on the board!!! The sound of a wounded animal kept coming off of Done Deal. RC Barry's mate fell in the boat and was barely able to get off the boat! But she showed up at every cocktail party and dinner! She was a trooper! The crabs at Solomons were fantastic!!! Did you know you could use an almost empty bottle of Captain Morgan to crack claws??? Master crab eater, Tom Strobel knows how to improvise!!! Kathy Kammann's (39th ??? )birthday was celebrated while in Solomons. Can't believe she's the mother of a past First Lady !!! Lastly, the Beer Pong Tournament was without controversy! Winners, PC Dick Bruns, PC Jeff Underland and his son took the honors, but word was there were elbows over the table!!! Hmmmmm??? SIS Kilroy Kilroy here, reporting: 1.) Fourth of July weekend entertainment and parade were very enjoyable this year. Again. 2.) Not much gossip from the Club cruise; perhaps the hot weather prevented some misbehaving. 3.) Kilroy enjoyed witnessing the wedding of James and Abbie Toner. The bride was stunning and the attendants could definitely wear those beautiful dresses again. The ceremony was quite lovely. Kilroy will even admit to a sentimental tear or two. 4.) In Kilroy's opinion, the pool went from invigorating to refreshing to just like a bathtub in the blink of an eye. Is it a prank or a misdemeanor to toss blocks of ice in? 5.) Next up: WOTI. Who will win the adult cannon ball contest and what will they wear? Kilroy
Fleet Chaplain’s Message RELATIONSHIPS We are looking at how we relate to one another, as a friend, relative, spouse, sibling or a boater. We are talking about a few topics in my heart that focus on the relationships we develop. Let’s take a moment this month and see how we relate. Greetings in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ. First we look at the challenge of the life we live and being too busy to focus on what is truly important. We need to make time for resting and recharging our batteries. We should be doing that this summer boating season. Are you doing that? Spending time with family and friends is important. Breaking the routine and making an effort to develop those close relationships will lead us through life. Psalm 23; 1-3: “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; He leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, brings honor to His name.” We now move on to talk about recognizing the efforts of others on our behalf. We need to realize that so many people have a part in our day to day life, the freedoms we enjoy, the boating we pursue. We are encouraged to acknowledge the efforts we all take and sacrifice, for the “way of life” boating takes us and the expense we encounter and understand the significance boating has in each of our lives. From there we look at chemistry, the way our personalities and common interests are molded together to achieve more tranquility than we can gain on our own. This is August, the height of the boating season and outdoor activities. We are all so blessed to experience the comradery, the great unity we have and lifestyle of the Baltimore Yacht Club. We need to understand of who all of us really are. We must walk alongside one another, hold up each other in the time of need and help each other, when we can. How we treat others, reveals what is in our hearts. Let us pray: Heavenly Father, thank You for giving Your peace, allowing us to respect each other and help each other in the time of need. Allow us to respect people that are not as fortunate as us. In the Lords holy name . AMEN Remember: “I have found that if you love life, life will love you back”. Manager’s Message The Club is ready to enter the hot dog days of August! We have finalized the Week on the Island schedule and are now preparing to welcome all our members and their families to the Club to create memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you to all that have agreed to help and chair events during the week. If you have ideas and suggestions for the future, I would suggest making notes and offering to step up next year and keep this special event strong and vibrant for years to come. This past month we finished with strong numbers and we continue to see a healthy pace of activity. I am looking forward to meeting with the many committees as we end the season to discuss and plan for next season and beyond. If you have any suggestions or feedback for this year, I would encourage you to share them on a comment card, with a committee member, board member, or stop by my office. Please keep in mind it is helpful to hear it all; good, bad, or indifferent. We will all be trying to get the most out of August as we end the summer. However, keep in mind that the Club has plenty of activities planned after Labor Day. Keep an eye on your emails and make plans to join us on Sue Island throughout the rest of the year. Cheers, Scott Lockwood, CCM
