Commodore’s Message Yawn. Stretch. Click, click, pop. Ow, oh no, Charlie horse. Jump up, run around in circles shaking my leg. Limp to the kitchen for about two gallons of coffee. Flip on the early news to catch the Bass Man. Yep, the Commodore was waking up for another day of adventure. And just like the Commodore, Baltimore Yacht Club is waking up for another season. And what a sleep it was! D-Pier is all but finished and the staff began moving equipment and food into its new home. I’ve heard it said that most of your healing occurs during your sleep and it looks to me like BYC had a helluva nap. We bit off rebuilding our biggest pier and finished roughly two months ahead of schedule! And while that was going on, we transformed our kitchen from camp fires in a dark cave to a modern culinary gem. There’s a few folks that need to be mentioned because of their above and beyond contributions to these projects. President of the Holding Corp and BYC Past Commodore Bob Rueter has been tireless in riding herd on the kitchen project, spending time at the Club it seemed every working day. Don Kaelber and Tom Parr of the Holding Corp paying attention to every detail as the D-pier project progressed. Don, who does not live close by was at the Club roughly three times a week monitoring progress. Don treated the project like it was his own house they were working on, it was amazing! And I don’t want to forget Ed Kohls of the Holding Corp who produced the architectural work on the redesigned kitchen. There were other contributions for sure, including our top shelf staff moving and clearing and storing things so that this work went smoothly and efficiently. Kudo’s to all!!! Our theme for the year is New York. I was born in Brooklyn and grew up in and around The City. And that’s what we called it, The City, just like here we say The Bay. It’s been imprinted on every aspect of my soul and I want the entire Club to have the opportunity to experience some of the wonders and adventures that I did growing up in one of the most diverse international cultural environments imaginable. Not to mention the food!!! Let’s make it happen… I was talking with Big Jake the other day explaining about the theme. I said I wanted to have a good old fashioned Italian Bistro night like back in Little Italy. Jake’s response almost knocked me over as he came right back with, “Dinner with the Don”. Watch for it … While the Club was shutdown, the 300 club and a handful of more seasoned members invaded, and in fact took over another local club. We just wanted to get together during the long winter nap and it turned into quite a party. During that party, the word karaoke came up a few times as we all were singing with the juke box. Let’s make it happen! To keep with the theme we could maybe call it “Speak Easy nights”. I need help with someone to organize and put it together, so if you’re motivated and intrepid, please step forward. Everyone else, watch for it… I coached baseball for over twenty five years, I’m a baseball man. Regarding this, our Fleet Captain Keith Lessner touched my heart a few weeks ago. On my wish list for this year was a boat trip to see the Orioles play my beloved Yankees. Sadly, when the schedules came out, the only weekend games in Baltimore were outside of traditional boating season and I accepted the reality this wasn’t going to happen. Then one night at a planning dinner, Keith proposed a Club trip by boat to a Monday night game and stated that he’ll make it happen. Watch for it…
Commodore’s Message Continued In the next two months, there are a series of business and social events that are woven into the very fabric that is Baltimore Yacht Club. This month we’ve got two Valentine’s dinners, our rescheduled membership cocktail party and our slip assignment class. Next month we have a land cruise which was sold out with all 80 seats accounted for, but GM Scott and I are working on a plan to accommodate and include those folks who are currently on the waiting list. We will come up with a solution. And then of course, the very next day we have that most hallowed of events, Slip Assignment Day. That’s followed by our annual St. Paddy’s Day dinner and celebration. The excitement just keeps building! For the weeks cruise, New York was just a little bit far but I hoped for something more daring than our usual triangle. Cape May was on my wish list but I wanted to hear from membership before deciding on an adventure of that scope. To my surprise, the number one choice came back as Cape May. We’ll be going through the Cape May canal so no one will set boat in the ocean. F/C Keith and Lady Sam are hard at work on an extraordinary vacation. If you attended the frost bite cruise you’ll understand when I say, it will be an amazing adventure. They’re so talented! Watch for it… F/L Ruthie and I realize we’re in this position for only one year. We have a vision but we need help. That help can be in the form of ideas, folks who can build things, folks who have artistic abilities, folks with decorations or enjoy decorating, folks that are enthusiastic and are motivators. Heck, your attendance at events is so very important, it’s all about the people and relationships. Step up and make a difference, not for Ruthie and I, but for Baltimore Yacht Club- the proudest club on The Bay. Together, we can make this an extraordinary year of fun, adventure and comradery. The season is almost on us, let’s get moving and make it happen! All help all bring the Club and basin back to life in style. Always yours, Commodore Joe Vislocky
Vice Commodore’s Message Hello Everyone, I can’t wait till we get back to dinners and activities at the Club!! The kitchen renovation has been progressing and will be open for Burger night on the 6th of February. I’ve had the chance to see all the new equipment and floor, and I must say it all looks fantastic!! Pat and I just got back from the Chesapeake Commodores Club Ball and a good time was had by all. BYC’s room theme of Beetlejuice looked great!! Thanks to all who worked on the room and decorations, R/C Bill, Karen, F/C Keith, Sam, Pat H. and Pat M. Thank you, P/C Wayne and Debbie, for your expertise and guidance in keeping things moving and organized. Thank you, IPC Bill Morgan, and Lady Sandy for chairing the event this year. Your hard work and dedication are greatly appreciated. And, special thanks to Captain John Monte, Pat Hodges and crew for all their hard work to make the Beetlejuice front for our hospitality room. It looked great and the sign was unbelievable. Also, thanks to P/C Dick Bruns and Mary for their yearly hauling of everything down to the Ocean and setting the framework up for the room. And last, but not least, as always Jack and Nancy Peters were there helping and taking pictures for the BYC TV for all to enjoy. We are blessed to have Jack and Nancy as members of BYC!! We have selected our 3C’s theme for next year and we have the Chairperson and Committee ready to go. A communication will be out soon with details. If you have never been to this great event, you don’t know what you’re missing. You do not have to be an Officer to attend, any BYC member a can go and participate in the activities. Hope to see you soon and to get back in the swing of things at BYC. We have a lot of great activities coming up, so keep checking your email for updates on Club activities. I have listed some activities below. February 02/14-Valentine’s Dinner 02/15-Valentine’s Dinner 02/16-Membership Cocktail Party 02/22-Introduction to Slip Assignment Class March 03/07-Land Cruise 03/08-Slip Assignment Day Till then, be safe and stay warm!! Vice Commodore Barry Scott
Rear Commodore’s Message Greetings members, I know it seems like a long time, but it’s about 7 weeks until spring. Time to start thinking about re- commissioning your boats and all the joy (?) they bring to us. The work on D-pier has been completed, and it looks fantastic!! Thanks to the Holding Corporation for all the planning and supervision that was necessary to complete this job. Special thanks to Don Kaelber for his periodic drone flyovers and updates on the work as it progressed. Regarding the “new” D-pier, members are allowed to re-install their deck boxes to the provided extended boards on the finger piers. The proper way to fasten the box is to drill 6 1/4 or 3/8-inch holes through the box and board and use 2 ½ inch stainless steel bolts, washers, and nuts. Additionally, drill 4 holes in the bottom of the box that are at least 3/8 inch to allow for high tides that occasionally flood the piers. This is necessary to prevent the boxes from lifting up, possibly damaging the deck boards. The Holding Corporation has set guidelines with regard to what can be attached to the piers. No ramps, water filters, or line holders are allowed to be installed on the deck surface at this time. In the coming weeks, they will advise members on how to properly fasten them to the stringer boards below. All requests for modifications must be sent to the Rear Commodore for review. In this regard, it is better to ask permission instead of forgiveness. Because ignoring this directive can cause damage to the deck surface, a monetary assessment will be charged to all who fail to abide. If a member would like the extensions to the finger piers removed to accommodate their boat, a formal request must be sent to the R/C for approval. For members who are new to the slip bidding process, there will be a class on February 22nd to help you understand how it all works. Slip Assignment Day will be on Sunday, March 8th, and caution is advised because the Land Cruise is the day before and Daylight Savings Time begins March 8th. Calls will be made Monday night to advise all who bid on a slip, old or new, if they were successful. Please provide a phone number on your request form where you can be reached; failure to do so will result in disappointment for you. In closing, if you have a question or need information, please email or call me at ortman1@live.com or 443-425-5576. To all, please have a safe and happy boating season. Regards, Bill Ortman R/C
Fleet Captain’s Message Fleet Captain Keith and his sidekick Sam (aka Fleetress Sam) have been very busy soliciting and listening to the members’ wishes regarding entertainment for the 2020 season. We have scheduled two more ski trip days for February 5 and 12. We did have some participation on our first ski day on January 22 to Whitetail Ski Resort. Patrick and Susan Longo, along with Mia and James, met up at Whitetail for a good day on the slopes. I hope we have more members accompany us in February. Sam and I have been busy vetting bands for BYC events. To date, we have contracted about seven bands for different events. A list of all the bands and the dates and times that they are scheduled to play will be forthcoming. I am hoping to have a full complement of bands under contract by the end of February. Just as a teaser, we have a well-known band, Sagamore, scheduled for Friday, July 3, and we hope to have the Chesapeake Room and bar filled to capacity. Please plan to attend. I guarantee you will enjoy the music. Our cruise season arrangements are almost complete. The cruise survey we conducted in December is reflected in our ports of call for this summer. Sam and I have made every effort to provide destinations based on the survey. We plan on having detailed information available to members on Slip Assignment Day, which is March 8, 2020, and in the March Spray. My only wish is that you sign up early for the cruise destinations of your choice so that we can organize events and ensure a well-planned vacation for all. Remember you can sign up for as many cruises and events as you want. One new cruise will be to Harbor East for a two-night stay and the opportunity to attend a Baltimore Orioles shellacking of the dreaded New York Yankees. Sorry Joe, but the Yankees are going down….. Sam and I are also looking for individuals to help chair several events. We will need assistance for the 4th of July Celebration, WOTI, BYC Auction, and evening events like karaoke. I am also planning some sunrise and moonlight kayak tours on beautiful Sue Creek or surrounding areas. If someone can assist in planning and execution of these events that would be great! If you like to bicycle, reach out to Sam and me for some trips we can organize for our members. Dates are filling fast with ideas you guys provided at our December meeting. Weekends are at a premium, so some events will happen during weekdays. If you are willing to help organize any of these activities, please let me know. I probably shouldn’t let this out of the bag yet but, on July 31, the Friday evening before WOTI, we are planning a 1968 revival complete with the clothes and music most of us experienced when we were young and inexperienced. A Beatles cover band, Sgt. Peppers, is performing outside under the stars in Grand Central Park in New York City, also known as BYC! Plan on attending and bring your kids so they can see what life was like before cell phones, MTV, and video games. Wow, this list could go on forever! Remember, entertainment helps make BYC a fun place throughout the year, and your ideas are very important to us. Please do not hesitate to send me a message if you have any thoughts to enhance our collective fun. Thanks for your support. You and your family should look forward to an amazing, fun-filled summer of 2020! Thanks F/C Keith and Fleetress Sam
A Message from the Princess Happy New Year! I hope that everyone enjoyed their Holidays just as much as I did. Mine was a mixture of relaxation and spending time with family and friends, but then school started again and I was straight back into the craziness. In December, I spent time with my family, my BYC family, and my Yacht Club family to celebrate several special occasions with them. Two of my favorite holiday BYC celebrations were the Children’s Christmas Party where I got to help Santa hand out the presents, and the Christmas Caroling event. Even though I am still a kid myself, watching children with Santa warms your heart. I have also celebrated with our yacht club community at their balls. It was great to dress-up, unwind, to connect with the other Princesses, and to honor our sister Yacht Clubs. In January, I traveled with my family to New York to celebrate my grandmother’s 70th birthday and got to let loose with all of my cousins. The long drive can be stressful, but I am so grateful when I get to see all of my family in the New England area. The holidays are not just days on the calendar. They are reminders of how important it is to make celebrations a priority to find time for everyone to gather with friends and family that mean the most to us. In January, I competed in the Advertising event in the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Maryland Regional, which qualified me to compete in the Maryland State FBLA competition. FBLA is the high school division of FBLA-Phi Beta Lambda and helps high school student prepare for careers in business through academic competitions and my membership in FBLA is helping me prepare for college and a future career through a variety of leadership, community service and academic activities. At school, I am now half way through my Junior year. This year will continue to be my most challenging as I prepare for more Maryland State Assessments, the SAT’s, updating my resume, and planning on finishing strong as I start to contemplate college in 2021. At BYC, I have already begun planning for more fundraisers for my charity – Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA). This organization and the people it serves depends on the generosity of great people like you to continue to carry out their work. Laslty, I want to send my heart felt condolenses to Bodkin Yacht Club, the CBYCA, and the Haber family on the loss of Commodore Ray Haber. He touched many generations in the Yacht Club community. A & B Pier Report Definitely been enjoying this calm Winter so far, hopefully it will continue that way right into Spring! Looks like B pier has some folks who are flocking to Florida, Dan & Connie Ziegfeld are heading south for a while in February – I’m sure there will be stories to tell when they return. John & Kathy Schlee enjoyed a winter get-away with their adult children and grandchildren recently to Deep Creek where they celebrated their grandson Cole’s 18th birthday and their own 52nd wedding anniversary! Congratulations and many more! I’m sure to have more news to share next month, if you have anything you would like to share please email me at lori.ostendarp@morganstanley.com. Take Care, Lori A. Ostendarp
C Pier Report It’s just now February and it already feels like winter has gone on forever. The extended shutdown may be making it feel that way! Folks were busy over the holidays! Joyce Gray joined Jim and Val Paluszynski in Mt Holly, NJ for the Lighting of the Leg Lamp!! Joyce also joined Jim and Val, along with Dan and Connie Ziegfeld, John and Kathy Schlee, Jan Nickel, Pat and Rosalie Brennan, Gayle Valentini, Charles and Betty Winchester and our own retired chef Linda and Phil at Steak and Main in North East for a festive holiday lunch. Word is the group will be gathering again at Bulle Rock for another fun afternoon. When most folks head for sunny, tropical locales as a getaway, the Paluszynskis, Stremmels and Schaefers chose an overcast, muddy weekend at a cabin in the woods. They made their own fun but Val reports she wants more amenities, like a working thermos next time! It was a great turnout for the Christmas dinner and lighted boat parade. Gary and Deb Blankenship joined us, along with George and Edwina Coder, Commodore Joe and First Lady Ruthie, RC Bill Ortman for a great dinner and fantastic parade. Looking forward to seeing lots of folks at the Valentine Day dinner and the Members Cocktail Party. Until next month.... Pat Meredith
D Pier Report Ahoy D Pier! The good news is that it has been a pretty mild winter in Maryland so far, the basin has been mostly ice free, and the D Pier work has come along nicely. The bad news is boating season is still a ways off. Meanwhile, several of our shipmates have been enjoying warmer places. P/C Dick and P/FL Mary Bruns have been traveling back and forth from Maryland to Florida where their RV is spending the winter in the Daytona area. Susan and John Gephart took their motorhome to Florida for three weeks in December and January. They enjoyed campsites on the water and rented a boat for a week. Their boat adventure included travel up to Sanibel, Captiva and the Cabbage Key Islands. They report great weather the whole time. Looking ahead to next winter, they have started looking into organizing a BYC RV rendezvous down South next year at possibly Savannah or Jekyll Island. Speaking of Florida, here is a last minute reminder that all BYC members and mates past and present are welcome to attend the annual BYC South Brunch to be held Sunday, February 23, 2020 in Punta Gorda, FL. Please contact Sylvia Stump for more details. Heading further South, Larry Vakoutis and Elke went to Atlantis on Paradise Island February 4th to the 12th for their annual winter vacation. Finally, a warm D Pier Congratulations to BYC Past Princess Meghan Burns, who just became engaged to longtime beau Shane Rose. Several BYC members have had the pleasure to meet Shane, who, like Meghan, is an aerospace engineer and graduate of Virginia Tech. Shane works at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren on missile defense. Meghan works at the Naval Air Systems Command at the Patuxent River Air Station. Meghan is the daughter of longstanding D Pier residents Rick and Kathy Burns. Looking forward to spring and seeing you on the new D Pier. Joe Hellner
Recently Dredged Travelift Area Now Plenty Water!!!
Sue Island Sue 49 days, 11 hours, 12 minutes, 48 seconds…. Countdown to Spring. I think there were times, it was Spring this past January with temperatures High in the 70’s but of course it’s winter and those temperatures go right back to an average of 30 degrees. Who is ready for winter to be over, I know I am. Don Kaelber, you have done a great job with the video and keeping everyone posted on the progress of D-Pier. Maybe a new career? Great job to Veronica Bruns – once again I see her with Governor Hogan at the Polar Bear Plunge. Always happy to see at least one boat still out there running around the basin at Sue Island. I believe the only thing that stops that boat these months would be weather, ice or lack of water. Looking forward to the February, the General meeting always draws a crowd as well as Valentine’s Dinner and the Members cocktail party on the 16th of February – As the days are starting to get longer and a little brighter, I have started to enjoy wearing my sunglasses late into the evening. COME ON SPRING. Till next time, Sue Island Sue
Kilroy 2019 is now in the rear view mirror and 2020 is full speed ahead. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday filled with time with family and friends. I know that everyone is patiently waiting for the ground hog to not see his shadow on February 2nd and we are hoping for an early spring. Time will tell. Kilroy heard that the Children’s Christmas Party, Caroling and dinner were smashing with everyone having a great time and behaving themselves. Good job, BYC. As 2019 ended, I heard that a BYC member was recognized on local news, on national news and on a national newsmagazine. We normally do not have members on any news medium except for our local weatherman. One of our members acknowledged his employees’ loyalty with a large bonus. I hear that the bonus was given out to employees by their tenure with the company. According to news reports the largest bonus was $270,000 to an employee with over 44 years with the company. The newsmagazine also reported the company was not hiring. Kudos to this BYC member for giving his employees generous gifts for their loyalty to the company. It was reported that the 3C’s ball went off without a hitch, but there were a couple of interesting things that happened over the weekend. Kilroy understands that a P/C placed a carbon monoxide detector in the freezer when the fire alarm at the hotel went off. Kilroy is wondering why the P/C would put the detector in the freezer but the biggest question is where did the detector came from? Rumor has it that his wife travels with them. Huh?? Also it seems a P/F/L thought the support for a drink dispenser was a dog bowl. Kilroy could see how the P/F/L mistook the support for a dog bowl. Kilroy would like to share some interesting facts I found about the club: The Fleet Review of 1960 had 67 boats paying homage to the outgoing Commodore. Wow, has anyone in recent memory seen that many boats in a Fleet Review?? Amazing. Did you know that the Commodore’s Ball for the incoming 1961 Commodore was held on Wednesday, November 23, 1960? Yes, the Commodore’s Ball was held on Thanksgiving Eve in 1960. An interesting fact about this Ball is that the tickets were $10.00 per person. The Club’s annual bull roast (no oysters in 1960) was held on a Sunday from 1pm to 6pm, tickets were $4.00 each (no I did not leave out a zero) and the menu included Pig Tails and Sauerkraut and Oxtail Soup. And there was no horse racing. Remember, Kilroy is watching……
Manager’s Message As I walk around the Club preparing for the after shutdown reopening, I can’t help but feel that we have a transition in time. After phase two of the kitchen remodeling we are officially done and the kitchen is looking completely different and has a fresh look and feel to it. We have some adjusting to do as we get acquainted with the new layout and later this month we hope to have an open house dinner event to allow members to come back and see the new kitchen first hand. During that walk I went down the nearly completed D-pier re-decking project. The results are stunning and the pictures we have shared in the Weekly Update emails and on our Facebook page just don’t give the final results justice. We are elated that the project was done ahead of schedule because I think we are all hoping for an early start to the boating season. With that said we anticipated some questions about the new layout. The questions should mostly be directed to Rear Commodore Bill Ortman but our team is planning to help as much as possible as we get adjusted with items such as dock box installations. Some items might incur a small fee to offset labor and material but as Donnie and the team have time they will be available to assist. This year’s shutdown was a little longer than normal and the team is all a little stir-crazy and ready to get back to the part of our jobs we enjoy the best, servicing the membership and their guests. It might sound a little cliché but when you are used to interacting each day with our membership it can get a little nerve- racking with no activity in the clubhouse. So needless to say February has been highly anticipated for myself and the team and we can’t wait to serve our first drink or ring in that first ticket to the kitchen. In closing I will mention that I used the shutdown period to unwind as well. Jessica and I took a much anticipated trip to Ireland and London. Hopefully some of you saw the pictures and posts I put up on my Facebook page but if not I am happy to share some of them with you on your next visit. The trip was an awesome experience and while we took in many sights the trip was highlighted by a stay in Mullagh, Ireland with my friend James and his family. James moved over to Ireland a little over ten years ago and this was our first chance to see him in his new home. It was great to stay with him and his family and get some home cooking while Jessica and I tried to squeeze as much as possible into the trip. I look forward to seeing you at the Club this month and throughout the 2020 season! Cheers, Scott Lockwood, CCM
