Page 4 April 2020 Chairman’s Report Well how things change so very quickly, (Covid-19 virus). There we were looking forward to what was coming up in events for us, the Motorcycle meeting, Kara- ka Vintage day, Commercial and Charabanc night, Club Night's speaker on Tyres, the Vintage meeting, Maunga Moana, Mooloo Meander, Branch's gym- khana, the National North Island Easter Rally, all cancelled along with all Branch meetings, runs and rallies. The March National Executive meeting, which was to held in Wellington was also cancelled. All our Clubroom renters have been ad- vised that the Clubrooms are now closed and will remain closed until further no- tice, which is the first time in the Branch's history. The Committee will keep you informed of any matters relative to the AVVCC. The builder has started on repairing the building with dismantling and rebuilding the damaged outside wall and repairing some internal damage as well. Reports on what has passed before the cancellation of events. The Veteran section - John Stokes meeting went well. The Mad Irish Woman Rally held in the Waikato: I was told this was a very suc- cessful event with members Peter Alderdice, Leo Fowler and Paul Tomlin taking part. The Bert Cuthbertson Rally: I attended this on my BSA Golden Flash, Stuart Metge plotted the event, which had a good turnout of 14 motorcycles and 5 cars and around 25 people. Everything about this rally was excellent from the instructions, route, weather and the great afternoon tea put on by Stewart’s wife Jan. Vintage Muster: Alan & Shaaran Price put on an excellent event with 26 entries and 56 people attending the dinner at the RSA in the early evening. Well that’s all for now folks, we hope you and your family stay safe and well at this stressful time. Keep those 2, 3 and 4 wheels turning safely. Martin Spicer
April 2020 Page 5 Club Captain’s Report My report will only be a shorter one this month, as we have effectively only had 4 events, being John Stokes Veteran meeting, The Midweek Tourers, the Motor- cycle Bert Cuthbertson Rally and the Vintage Muster. John Stokes Veteran meetings continue with their good attendance. The Vintage Muster was plotted by Shaaran and Alan Price, out in the western parts of Auckland. 26 entries started the event and by all accounts it was an excellent rally. 56 people gathered in the early evening to have dinner at the RSA. Congratulations to Rodger and Val Ball, who won their section and Gavin Welch and Sophie Zhao, who won their section and won the rally overall. Thanks to all the marshals who helped out at this event. My apologies that Martin and I didn’t attend, but it was the big 5 birthday for our grandson, who now goes to big boys school he tells us. The Bert Cuthbertson Rally was attended by 14 motorcycles and 5 cars. A love- ly Franklin countryside rally was plotted by Stuart Metge and a great afternoon tea provided by Jan, Stuart’s wife. The winner of this event was Martin Seay on his little Triumph Terrier. Well, what a month March turned out to be and at this stage I am unsure as to when my next report will be. The Committee has been hard at work, via emails and telephone calls, making hard decisions on behalf of Branch members and what to do for the best. On Tuesday (17 March) we made the decision to close the Branch for all events, including our regular Saturday afternoons, bi- weekly Thursday nights and all other groups which meet at the Clubrooms reg- ularly; Commercial, Library, Charabanc, Vintage, Veteran and Motorcycle sec- tion meetings. We have also closed our Clubrooms to all outside hirers until further notice. During that day and Wednesday we were kept abreast with other things going on within the VCC movement and getting notifications of events being can- celled everywhere Nationwide. We also received a notification on Friday 20 March that the International Rally planned for 2021 has been postponed until early 2022. For those who have entered, you will be kept appraised of ongoing actions. We were also advised that the National VCC Daffodil Day is also can- celled. The National Executive meeting, due to be held on 28 th March in Wellington, was also been cancelled. The Committee will be discussing during the next couple of weeks, as to wheth- er we have our AGM or whether this will be postponed. Again, you will be kept advised of any developments through the email tree. If you are not on our email tree and have access to a computer, please let Tracey Winterbottom know your email address, as this will be the only line of communication open to us for the short-term in getting important information out to our members in a timely fashion. I understand that Murray Firth is going to try and keep the Vintage section go- ing, asking members to send him stories etc., which he will distribute through his email list to those members who have attended their previous meetings. Martin will keep his emails going through to the Motorcycle members.
Page 6 April 2020 Club Captain’s Report Contd... May I suggest that John Campbell and John Stokes perhaps take the same approach with their sections? We are experiencing unprecedented times in New Zealand history and one way or another Covid-19 is impacting on everyone, no matter their age or gen- der. I appreciate that there are many members who live alone and so I would urge other members, who know these members who live alone, to check in on them with a telephone call to see if they are okay and that any help they may need is being met, especially those that have no family. Keeping in touch with emails is also another way of stemming the loneliness, especially as the over 70’s have been advised to stay indoors. This of course is our household as Mar- tin is now 71 and I will be staying at home as well. Luckily we have our large farm to wander around in and there is plenty to keep us busy – sorting out our garage is a starting point and getting our veggie garden back up and grow- ing, still waiting for our tomatoes and capsicums to ripen, they are later varie- ties so patience I hear you say! My final message to you all is to stay well, stay busy and stay positive. Take care of each other. Lynda Spicer ARE YOU ON THE TREE? We have an email tree to remind you what is coming up, and any other relevant information that comes to hand between Bulletins. You won’t get bombarded with rubbish and your email address is not visible to anyone else on the distribution list. If you are reading this and would like to be includ- ed please send me an email at vintagesunbeam@hotmail.co.nz and you’ll be in the loop. Tracey Winterbottom
April 2020 Page 7 Library Notes As I write this, many of our older members are ‘confined to barracks’ and no doubt could do with some interesting reading material to pass the time. It’s a pity then that the Clubrooms (and the Library), are understandably out of bounds. Sorry about that, but as they say, never mind, this too, will pass. In the meantime, have a think about that article or book you have always wanted to write on that aspect of motoring history that has interested you so much for some time. When you are ready, you will no doubt require a source of information on mo- toring history and our Branch Library is well stocked with material going back to the very beginning of motoring, both in this country and in those countries from which our vehicles emanated. We have all manner of history books, such as AA publications from as early as 1912, AA road maps of NZ from 1929, Auckland Motor Show catalogues from the 1920’s, and Auckland vehicle registration records from the early 1900’s. In magazines there are Autocar and Motor from 1910, NZ Motor and Cycle from 1905, Motorworld (Wellington AA) from 1935, Beaded Wheels and our own Branch Bulletin from issue No 1, ….to name but a few. Then there is the film ma- terial, for instance the very first AVVCC club run and early NZ Grand Prix etc. Our scrapbook collection has some real gems, from the likes of Arthur Dexter, Phil Jones and a recent addition is from Douglas Wood. This last mentioned comprises 5 bound volumes, each about 2 inches thick, all indexed in detail and comprising all manner of items (mostly motoring-related) which this well- known and prolific writer for Beaded Wheels found of interest. Lastly, another ‘plug’ for our collection of handbooks, parts books and work- shop manuals. These tend to be ‘out of sight, out of mind’ for visitors, but re- member, they cover a vast range of older vehicles and we can provide cop- ied material on request. On another tack, one of the most borrowed books in our collection would have to be ‘Climax in Coventry’ by Walter Hassan. It is the story of his working life, which began in the early 1920’s when he was a ‘ten bob a week shop boy’ at fledging Bentley Motors, through building the Brooklands specials for Woolf Barnato, the Napier-Railton Mobil Special, then ERA, Bristol Aircraft engines, Jaguar and the XK120 and culminating with Coventry Climax Grand Prix en- gines. It is a great read and little wonder that it is often borrowed by our mem- bers. Happy reading Chris Wood and the Library Team:—Owen Hayward, Colin Bott, Barry Birchall, John Stokes & Barry Robert.
Page 8 April 2020 Veteran Notes Attendance was well down at the March meeting due to a number of members being on the HCCNZ’ Brass Era Tour and the Mad Irish Woman’s event. John Morrison has replaced the running board lino on his 1913 Humberette. He also displayed his 1908 Sears Auto-buggy at a recent classic car show. Barry Robert has had some issues with his now club eligible CF Bedford, Rover transporter. Michael Pellow is trying to source a hub puller with external threads for his ’04 Rover. Gavin Welch spoke of his attendance at the Art Deco event in Napier. Some general discussion was held on the location of the 2021 Veteran Run. Barry Birchall is still researching the early history of New Zealand motoring. Sadly the gymkhana event at Mike Courtney’s has been cancelled because of Covid-19, this might have been suitable for Veterans. You will also note that the Committee have decided to close the clubrooms until we know more about the implications of Covid-19, so there will be no section meetings until further notice John Stokes Secretary’s Notes I hope everyone is keeping themselves safe and occupied in these strange times. What an excuse to spend your day in the shed with your old car! We will keep you connected through electronic Bulletin and emails, I know most of the section co-ordinators are also keeping you in touch. Both ours and the National Facebook page are also great ways to keep informed. There is now a private Facebook group for the Vintage Car Club, check it out and get yourself joined up. The intent is for it to be the forum for discussion with like minded people, a great platform to reach out if you are stuck with a particular technical problem, or just want to share a story. See you on the other side of this lockdown. Tracey Winterbottom
April 2020 Page 9 Commercial Notes With our Clubrooms being closed until the end of April, I’m afraid there is little to report. I have to say I’m receiving plenty of e-mail fodder about the serious- ness of the situation. There is plenty of stuff circulating, suggesting that it’s all a hoax. One thing is certain, the annual influenza toll the world experiences is far and away greater than the present Covid-19 toll. We’ve had our Flu shots al- ready! My article this month, comes from a 67-year-old English Motorcycle magazine given to me by Martin Spicer, which has a feature on a 1927 Leyland Lion bus prominent in its first few pages. The bus was fully restored by 1963 after 2 years work by the Lincolnshire Vintage Vehicle Socie- ty. It entered service in February 1927 in Brad- ford, Yorkshire as the only front entrance single deck Lion, that the company ever owned and by 1963 showed 1,000,000 miles on the odome- ter. Powered by a 4,144cc petrol driven 4 cylin- der, making 28.9 BHP. She has a crash gear box, rod brakes operating on the front wheels and transmission and hand brake to rear wheels. She weighs 4 ton 8cwt unladen and carries 31 people at a top speed of 12 miles per hour. Keep “M” Rolling John Campbell
Page 10 April 2020 Mid Week Tourers A great turnout last month for a 30 plus mile tour to Waiuku, over roads not used for a while. Participants included Max Jamieson in his usual long serving Delage. Max only days before had been recognised for 60 years continuous membership, straddling at least four Branches. Barry and Nicola Birchall were in their “P” Daimler, stately motoring at it’s best. At the other end of the scale Harvey Brewer had his trusty baby Austin. Dave and Kath Hewitt came along in their MG Magnette, they are making progress restoring an early “T” series which has history. Others were Hank Coenraadts in his Studebaker, the Costel- los in a ’57 Chev, at least three Jaguars and it seemed, many Model A’s. The Clelands came in their recently acquired ’28 Essex which has replaced their ’27, Safer, Bob says, with 4 wheel brakes. Onlookers from the public who dropped by to see what was going on at the Landing included one Barry Baker, a local business man and member of the Rolls Royce Club, in his beauti- ful Corniche convertible. Another was the Waiuku Town Manager promoting the Waiuku Steel ‘N’ Wheels day, Sunday 10 th. May. For more info, contact Sharlene at waiukutownmanager@gmail.com Arriving at the Waiuku Landing, most of us boarded the charter Launch Ratahi for a lunchtime cruise on the Manukau. Even those who were on the “stand by” list (and present on the day) found seats. We commiserate with Penny Firth, who was in Hospital for emergency surgery, Brian Hosking who was recov- ering from similar surgery, Doug Pinker and family who at the last minute could- n’t make it, but the stand by people were the lucky ones and helped balance the books. Good health germs to everyone! The Ratahi is an historic vessel, built by the O’Rourke Brothers in Auckland in 1938 and until recently worked in the Bay of Plenty, (google Manukau Charters). Bought by Trevor Pennington two years ago, he and two sons motored it back to Waiuku via Cape Reinga in four and a half days, then restored her for charter work. A great addition to the attributes of Waiuku. If there is sufficient interest, we’ll look at repeating a similar cruise, perhaps next year. Or what about the Jane Gifford? Coming Events: NOW ALL POSTPONED UNTIL??? Wednesday 22 April: Note change of day, 4th. Wednesday this month. Still the same date, but Kelvin’s original destination is not available, so he has arranged a new one in Kaukapakapa (a boutique chocolate factory and shop). The Silverdale collection will still be on another day. Starts from The Warehouse Car park, Westgate. 10:00 am for a 10:30 am departure. BYO everything. Wednesday 20 May: To be confirmed, but it is expected to be a southern (Drury) start for a run that will include an optional lap or two on the Pukekohe Raceway. Which might bring us to the end of the current style of monthly Mid-week Tour- er’s Runs. They will continue, rest assured, but without a team co-ordinator they might not be every month. Pat and I are retiring from the co-ordinator’s job, but are happy to do the occasional run. There is a good team ready to help and at least one who is thinking about co-ordinating the southern runs.
April 2020 Page 11 Mid Week Tourers Contd... Which seems to be a good time to mention our up-coming Branch AGM. All elected positions on our Committee are, as usual, open for nominees, plus some of the appointed roles, like the Bulletin Editor. Think about it, don’t leave it to the “old hands”, no matter how well they have done. New blood brings fresh enthusiasm and ideas. If you are unable to volunteer, look around, talk to oth- ers whom you believe would have something to offer, don’t leave it all to “the others”. Drive safely and enjoy the countryside. Page 12 April 2020 Vintage Notes The high point in March for the Vintage Section had to be the Vintage Muster. To see so many beautifully presented stately cars from around the 1920’s was such a treat. I think the Committee’s decision to limit entries to “Vintage Only” was entirely appropriate. Many thanks to Shaaran and Alan Price for a great event. Sadly, the March Vintage Section meeting had to be cancelled and the situa- tion may carry on for a little while, meaning almost all Branch activities will be on hold. But the Branch is about fellowship and I would urge members to not only maintain, but lift contact with each other. Some of us risk being isolated by cur- rent events but communication technology has come a long way since our ve- hicles were made, so use it! This month we are featuring an article by Norm Dewhurst on the history of his Essex. Enjoy! “The first car I ever bought is our 1925 Essex Coach, affectionately known in our family as “Miss Fallwell”. Bought new in 1925 by Alfred Gilbee Fallwell, a pharma- cist in Papatoetoe, on his death in 1939 it passed to his widow but it appears that she did not drive, so their spinster daughter took over the driving. During the ‘40s, I recall that it became a well known sight in Papatoetoe and Otahuhu, driv- en by this woman. In 1952 I spotted it for sale parked at the kerbside in front of Butlers Garage, Papatoetoe. My parents at the time had a rather tired 1925 Essex Tourer and I persuaded them to upgrade to this Coach. Fully weather proof and really the fore runner of a working man’s closed car. I knew Tom But- ler, having been an apprentice with his son Ron at night school and a deal was done for 75 pounds. For the next 12 months I probably drove it more than Dad, participating in a number of modern day car rallies and reliability trials. (I was a member of the Hamilton Car Club then). One day Mum said to me “you’re wearing our car out, best you buy it or else get your own!” So I bought it and continued to ‘wear it out’. During the late ‘50s, the late Phil Jones, a lifetime friend of mine, pestered me to join the newly formed Auckland VCC. I initially resisted, saying it was not good enough, but Phil’s reaction was “we haven’t got your model in the club.” Seems they might have been more interested in gaining different models than more members! Come 1960 and the Essex was worn out and marriage was pending for Pat and I. A mortgage, a house to finish, then children and so on and Miss Fallwell was parked up. Twenty years later she was ready to go back on the road and daughter Tracey wanted to enter it in the 1980 Rotorua Interna- tional Rally. Essex’s have been wrongfully maligned over the years. Or at least the early six cylinder models. The first six, in 1924, was an utter disaster to the extent that the only place where they might be found today is in the ‘Colonies’. In North Ameri- ca the factory recalled them all and retro-fitted the re-designed 1925 engine. Even here in NZ, most 1924 cars have been reengined with the 1925 engine. Memories of that first six lived on and tainted the reputation of the later, vastly improved engines. And let’s not forget that Essex out-sold everything else in 1928. They have done so well for a low cost closed car, a category they virtually pioneered.
April 2020 Page 13 Vintage Notes Contd... So, many miles later, having been literally “rallied, raced and rolled’, been all over New Zealand, been driven by all three of our children, (and now our grand daughter Kate) todays traffic is not as kind especially in Auckland (two wheel external brakes,) it will stay a two- family owned car. We want Tracey to continue looking after it, even though Stephen may not be so sure. Our only stipulation is that the roof stays on! Thanks Norm and Pat Murray Firth “Miss Fallwell”—1925 Essex Coach at Piha in 1956, Eb Moffit’s Ford in background

Page 16 April 2020 AVVCC 37th Vintage Muster 2020 It was pleasing to receive twenty six vehicles, including two motorcycles, enter this event. Seven vehicles entered the Touring class and 19 were Competitive. After leaving the carpark, the next instruction was ‘Turn left’. Remember – rally rules state that the word ‘turn’ means 90 degrees. Eight entrants went the first left, which was an acute entry into Birdwood Rd, the remainder continued ahead and found that the next left was 90 degrees and so found an on course manned check and were given a slip to instruct them to continue on a course which took them to Birdwood Rd and continue on with written instructions through to the hills above Swanson. The route was not what we originally planned. A week before the rally, Vineyard Rd was closed due to road works, which meant replotting and recalculating the timed section at the last minute. Overriding instruction had told the competitive section entrants to ignore No Exit roads. At the intersection of O’Neills and Christian Roads straight ahead is a No Exit. Three competitors went into John Stokes’ off course check. A straight forward route up the Scenic Drive until going right to follow Te Henga Rd and then the next instruction ‘Left into Bethells Rd’ which was achieved by entrants motoring straight ahead and then doing a circuit of Te Aute Ridge Rd and coming back to find Bethells Rd on their left. It was only a short distance from here to the afternoon tea break at Waitakere and the end of the timed section for the day. It wasn’t long before entrants were following an instruction which said ‘Keep left until ahead at Constable Rd’. A series of left hand roads were No Exit – Remem- ber the overriding instructions stated to ignore No Exit roads! Amongst these no exit roads was Pioneer Lane. Seven entrants used this road and came across Norman and Pat Dewhurst, an off course check. We hear you say “but it wasn’t a No Exit”. We agree, but it was a Lane, and the overriding instructions told you to ignore them too! After that it was straight forward. The vista approaching Muriwai was at its best on such a beautiful day. Entrants could stop and walk to view the Gannets if they wished. A simple route through to Waimauku, Kumeu, Riverhead, Taupaki and into Swanson ended the day. But there was one final trick. On entering
April 2020 Page 17 AVVCC 37th Vintage Muster 2020 Contd. Swanson there was that silent check CHEV again. Remember – go next left. This took entrants down the short Church St., where, when returning up to Swanson Rd., CHEV was seen again and so left into Swanson Rd you were to go and along to the final manned check just before the Swanson RSA. For those who missed the CHEV’s, it did not matter as they were already on Swan- son Rd. Fifty six people sat down to dinner and prizegiving at the Swanson RSA. We must thank the participants, marshals and afternoon tea helpers for your entries and help. Without all of you this would have been a non-event. Page 18 April 2020 2020 Vintage Muster from a Participant A beautiful fine day for the 26 entrants to navigate the roads around west Auck- land . The touring group set out first with the slow vintage next, followed by the fast vintage. We weaved our way around some very scenic roads and some very narrow ones as well. I'm sure the plotters had us going around in circles (or maybe that was just us). A little bit of confusion as we headed into a No Exit Rd (it did come out at the other end) that was so steep that I'm sure every car did the long crawl to the top in 1st gear. Our old Dodge powered up in low gear but the problem was coming down, 2nd gear and on and off with the foot brake and hand brake (only rear wheel brakes makes it a challenge). We ar- rived at the bottom in a rather large cloud of smoke and no foot brake left. On to a welcome afternoon tea and a rest, then with everyone relaxed a tricky in- struction to catch out most of the field. The finish was at the Swanson RSA where we found Peter Alderdice having a beer. He claimed to have lost his way so went straight to the finish, might of been a ploy not to win. A very enjoyable day and some excellent motoring over 60 miles. Well done Alan and Shaaran on plotting an inter- esting rally. April 2020 Page 21 Bert Cuthbertson Rally The morning dawned warm and sunny. Leaving home on my Golden Flash and arriving at the Jolly Farmer, Drury, it was a pleasing sight to see 14 motorcycles and 5 cars with a total of 26 people, including Graham Brooks who rode his BSA Goldstar from Thames, Gavin Welch and friend who rode their Triumph Bonne- ville and Kawasaki from North Shore, with the smallest motorcycle being Martyn Seay’s Triumph 150cc Terrier, whilst the oldest motorcycle was Brian King’s 1938 BSA and sidecar, Graeme Crawley rode his 659 BMW, Brian Gathercole had his 350 Matchless, Ian Hubbard was on his Bonnie, Lloyd Wilson and Ian Bell came on their Triumph Speed Twins and from Mangatangi, Paul & Robin Muir on their 500 Velocette. Plotter Stuart Metge and Graham Waters were on their Norton Commando’s, Ron Gill came out in his Porsche and Geoff Stoner was in his Fiat Bambina, Malcom Brown and Meret drove their Mazda Sports car and back up was Warwick & Trish Darrow. Poor Trish had her left arm in plaster, which she had broken when she fell at the recent Velocette Rally dinner. Stuart gave a briefing and told a joke. We headed up and over the great Ponga Road and then onto Hunua, Jones, Creightons, Monument, Sky High, Hunua again, then Ararimu, Dunn, Totara and while coming down Paparata Road you got a brilliant view of Pukekohe, Manukau City and Auckland City, finally into Bombay Village, where we headed to the finish at Stuart & Jan’s home. Jan had laid on a great after- noon tea of filled rolls, sausage rolls and scones, tea, coffee and iced water. Thank you Jan and thanks Stuart for a very good Bert Cuthbertson Rally. We decided that Martyn Seay was the winner on his diminutive and great looking Triumph Terrier. Well done Martyn. Martin Spicer Martyn Seay’s Triumph Terrier
