TANKARD TIMES • March 9 • 2019 | PAGE 2 BRIER Two sneak previews BRANDON 2019 Now the Alberta’s Kevin Koe real fun (below) is king of the hill — for now. begins in playoffs By GRANT GRANGER T Tankard Times Writer he final draw of the 2019 Tim Hortons Brier, presented by AGI, featured previews of today’s playoff games. Who plays who in which game was already known. What wasn’t was who would get the hammer in each game. It will be Alberta against Northern Ontario in tonight’s 1-2 page playoff game with the winner going directly to Sunday’s final (7 p.m.). The loser takes on the winner of this afternoon’s 3-4 game between Team Canada and Team Wild Card in Sunday’s semifinal (1 p.m.). As it happens, last night’s final Championship Pool round-robin curl clashes were the same as what today’s will be. Alberta went in with a 10-0 record, Northern Ontario 9-1. So all that was at stake was who would get hammer. And the hammer goes to — drum roll please — Alberta. Kevin Koe’s Calgary crew edged the Northern Ontario team from Sault Ste. Marie, skipped by Brad Jacobs, 7-6 Friday night to run the round-robin table at 11-0. “Undefeated doesn’t mean a lot, we’ve just got to keep playing well and we’re going to have to find our best game still on the weekend,” said Koe, who is supported by third B.J. Neufeld, second Colton Flasch, lead Ben Hebert, alternate Ted Appelman and coach John Dunn. “It’s always a reassuring feeling to have hammer. As long as you use it. Even a one-point lead against these good teams matters. “We got a few breaks and kind of capitalized, which we’ve been do- ing all week.” Northern Ontario (9-2) was assured of at least second place even with the loss because they beat both Canada and Wild Card including a gruelling 7-6 extra- end win over Team Canada’s Brad Gushue earlier in the day. A chance seedling grew among the row of Jonagold apples. TEAM When it bore its first fruit, the orchard workers tasted the new apple. It was like nothing they’d ever tasted before. BUCKET Choose 4 Original 16 Cans for $23 Available for a limited time The Mennell family recognized this tree was special. The next year they were delighted when the apples were as perfect in appearance and taste as before. They had the apple tested, and it was found to be a completely new species, created by nature. Wilfred Mennell named the bi-coloured apple Ambrosia, which in Greek mythology means food of the gods. Chance seedlings are extremely rare and less than a dozen of these chance seedlings have found their way to market in the past 50 years. Ambrosia is a result of one of those seedlings. In 1993, with the help of Summerland Varieties (formerly the Okanagan Plant Improvement Corporation), the Mennells registered the apple and took it to market. The 2019 Scotties Tournament of Hearts champions “I can’t put into words what an honour it is to wear from Alberta skipped by Chelsea Carey with Sarah the maple leaf,” said Carey in a conference call with Wilkes at third, Dana Ferguson at second, Rachelle reporters Friday. “It’s the best and most humbling, By Brown at lead, alternate Jill Officer, coach Dan Carey incredible experience I’ve ever had in my life. TANKARD TIMES • March 9 • 2019 | PAGE 23 For Brown, 32, who along with Ferguson battled hard to win a Canadian title for skip Val Sweeting for years, getting to finally wear the maple leaf is emotional. “I’m literally sitting here vibrating thinking about putting that jersey on,” said Brown. “We get to wear these. This is insane. I’m so excited. It comes with a lot of expectations with being Team Canada, but it’s just such an honour to represent Canada, and represent our sport, and to do it with these girls, I’m just beyond excited.” Carey, 34, has already debriefed her teammates about what to expect, especially in these days between the Scotties and worlds. “That was a tough thing for me last time, is that you expect to be able to celebrate the fact that you’ve just accomplished a life-long dream and you really don’t have any time to celebrate. There’s so much to do and you’re very, very busy between the two,” said Carey, who added the team will be “getting some feedback and some weigh-ins from a fifth player with far more experience than I could ever hope to have.” That would be Officer, a six-time Canadian champion and Olympic gold medallist playing for Jennifer Jones. “Playing in a world championship in another country other than Canada is different and the distractions will be different than playing in Canada, but there still will be distractions,” said Officer. Over the years, Officer experienced playing world championships in Japan, Scotland, and South Korea, as well as, of Sarah Wilkes had a smile on her face during the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Sydney, N.S. course, the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. “The energy is different in the venue. There’s typically very few people out there watching. You can’t really feed off the crowd, like you might be able to in Canada that you need to be mindful of,” said Officer, 43. Carey said it’s not a fair to compare preparing for a second world championship to the first time. “Your first one is just your first one. It doesn’t matter how many people you talk to. I don’t think I could have done anything different for my first one. But now having been through it once, it’s no different than my second Scotties,” said Carey. “Once you go through it, once you have a different level of expectation and people telling you what to expect doesn’t really help. It’s not the same thing. I don’t know I’m doing anything different, but I’m more prepared for what’s going to happen than I could have possibly been the first time, which is a good thing.” If they win, Brown’s teammates will be hard-pressed to match the celebration she had after winning the Scotties. Her teammates chuckled at the mention of her Jose Batista-esque broom toss after they secured the title,. “I was in complete shock. I was there before but we had never actually won, so to actually win and finally achieve that goal I kind of just blacked out,” said Brown. “People were telling me I did those things and I was ‘no, I didn’t.’ But then I watched it back and I totally did! “It’s just like sheer joy and yeah, I guess I tossed my broom and I clawed at Dana’s arm for a little bit, and squealed apparently, I was pretty excited. I’m still excited.” Needless to say, Canadian curling fans are excited to see what Brown will do if she and her teammates win in Denmark wearing a maple leaf. Dana Ferguson was a force at the recent Scotties Tournament of Hearts for Alberta.
